Storm Coordination Message #1 – Late Sunday Night 11/26/23-Monday Morning 11/27/23 – Coastal Storm Impacts

Hello to all…

..A coastal storm system will move quickly and rapidly intensify bringing a 6-8 hour period of heavy rain to Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island with strong winds at the coast late tonight through early to mid-morning Monday. Rainfall amounts of 1-2″ are expected in Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island with lesser rainfall of up to 1″ west of this area. Strong winds will develop along the coast..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect for Cape Cod and the Islands from 1 AM-7 AM Monday for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH and isolated higher gusts possible. Other coastal areas across East and South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island could see wind gusts of around 40 MPH with isolated higher gusts. These winds could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A coastal flood statement has been issued for minor splashover and low-end minor coastal flooding for the Monday Morning high tide for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Its noted that if the stronger winds are a little later than forecast, it could cause more coastal flood issues than currently forecast and this will be monitored. East Coastal Massachusetts high tide is later and no coastal flood issues are expected in these areas..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for rain gauge totals 1″ or more, any measured wind gusts 40 MPH or greater and any wind damage reports late Sunday Night into Monday Morning. Another coordination message will be posted by 11 PM Sunday Evening..

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Monday 9/18/23-Early Tuesday Morning 9/19/23 – Flood and Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Heavy Rainfall this Monday through early Tuesday Morning could lead to flooding issues in portions of Connecticut, Rhode Island, Central and Eastern Massachusetts, particularly if heavy rain tracks into area hit hard by heavy rainfall last week..
..A Flood Watch is in effect through late Monday Night for Northern Connecticut, Rhode Island, Eastern Hampden County through Central and Eastern Massachusetts except for Cape Cod and the Islands. Widespread 1-3″ rainfall is expected in the flood watch area with isolated locations or a band of locations potentially having 3″+ of rainfall. This rainfall combined with prior wet conditions and rainfall can lead to urban, poor drainage, small river and stream flooding..
..The threat of severe weather is low but will also monitor any thunderstorm development for an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm with strong to damaging winds as a secondary threat for Monday Evening..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for rain gauge, flooding, and any wind damage reports this Monday through early Tuesday Morning. This will be the only coordination messages as we move to operations mode. Below is the NWS Boston/Norton Flood Watch Statement, Area Forecast Discussion and Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook..

Hurricane Lee while currently expected to track approximately 100-150 miles east of Cape Cod and Nantucket will bring tropical storm force conditions to the Tropical Storm Warning area. This means heavy rainfall for Southeast Massachusetts including the Cape and Islands as indicated in the headlines, strong to damaging winds that could be exacerbated by saturated soils and fully leaved out trees and coastal storm surge flooding in portions of coastal Southern New England. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The track of Lee can still have about 50-75 nautical mile error. The current track guidance gives the current set of conditions. If the track shifts further east, the impacts would be lessened and confined to the Eastern Massachusetts coast. If the track shifts west, it would expand the tropical storm force conditions further into Southern New England.
2.) Lee’s large size and any expansion in size depending on the track could also expand impacts in Southern New England or make impacts in the current Tropical Storm Warning area higher. This will be monitored. From the 2 PM advisory to the current advisory, the tropical storm force wind field expanded from 290 miles to 345 miles and this will continue to be monitored.
3.) Timing and track of Lee’s approach to the region with the high tide cycle will determine extent of coastal flooding and the headlines depict the current thinking.
4.) The track will determine how much rainfall and where the heaviest will fall in the region and the headlines depict the current thinking.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely during the tropical storm force conditions. Another coordination message will be posted by 1130 AM Friday Morning. 4.) The track will determine how much rainfall and where the heaviest will fall in the region.

Severe Weather/Flash Flood Coordination Message #1 – Wednesday 9/12/23 Severe Weather/Flash Flood Potential

Hello to all…
..Thunderstorms with heavy downpours and flooding to flash flooding of urban/poor drainage areas, rivers and streams is a primary threat and an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm with strong to damaging winds as a secondary threat are expected late Wednesday Morning into early Thursday Morning with a trough and cold front poised to move through the area during Wednesday Afternoon and Evening. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed interior Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut in a marginal risk for severe weather for Wednesday..
..A Flood Watch is in effect from late Wednesday Morning through early Thursday Morning for the entire NWS Norton Coverage area except for Cape Cod and the Islands and the East slopes of the Berkshires for widespread rainfall of 1-2″ with areas or a band or two of 2-4″ of rain with isolated higher amounts leading to the potential for more flooding particularly in areas hit by the significant flash flooding Monday or the more isolated heavy rainfall this past weekend. Urban/poor drainage/river and stream flooding are all threats in the Flood Watch area..
..Hurricane Lee Coordination Messages will start some time Wednesday or Thursday Morning. Impacts remain unclear with model solutions providing different outcomes on what impacts and how much area of Southern New England could be impacted. People should continue to follow NWS/NHC updates on Hurricane Lee..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for rain gauge, flood and any severe weather reports in the region late Wednesday Morning through Wednesday Night..

A historic flash flood affected portions of Southern New England. Pictures of flooding, flood damage from the hardest hit areas can be sent as reply to this message, via our Facebook/Twitter feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. Yet another frontal system will make its way to Southern New England Wednesday bringing the renewed threat for flooding as the primary threat with isolated severe weather as a secondary threat. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:
1.) Whether heaviest rain impacts areas hard hit on Monday.
2.) How widespread the heavy rain will be in the region
3.) The extent of any severe weather potential based on level of instability

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for rain gauge, flood and any severe weather reports in the region. Another coordination message will be posted by 11 AM Wednesday Morning. Below is the NWS Boston/Norton Flood Watch Statement, Area Forecast Discussion and SPC Day-2 Convective Outlook:
