Flash Flood/Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday July 11th, 2013 Flash Flood/Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all..

..Thunderstorms with flood to flash flood potential and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms possible throughout the day today across much of Southern New England. Urban/poor drainage and small river/stream flooding and strong to damaging winds are the primary threats..
..A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Thursday Afternoon for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor thunderstorms this Thursday Morning with Ops at NWS Taunton possible. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible for a second round of thunderstorms this Thursday afternoon and evening..

Yesterday, enough sunshine and destabilization occurred to allow for severe thunderstorm development in Connecticut with a possible tornado touchdown in the Coventry to Mansfield, CT area and a possible weak touchdown in Tolland Connecticut from a separate severe thunderstorm. As of 710 AM, Doppler Radar showed developing thunderstorms in the area. These thunderstorms will contain heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding of urban and poor drainage areas and small rivers and streams this morning with an isolated strong or severe thunderstorm possibly producing strong to damaging winds. After these thunderstorms move through, another round of thunderstorm activity potentially producing flooding of urban and poor drainage areas and small rivers and streams and another threat for strong to damaging winds is possible later this afternoon into this evening. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Thursday Afternoon for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor thunderstorms this Thursday Morning with Ops at NWS Taunton possible. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible for a second round of thunderstorms this Thursday afternoon and evening. This will be the only complete coordination message on today’s threat.
