Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Sunday 6/2/19 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms possible to likely across Western and Central Massachusetts and Connecticut Sunday Afternoon and Evening. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall and the potential for urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed Western and Central Massachusetts and Connecticut in a marginal to slight risk of severe weather Sunday..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Boston/Norton will likely commence by 2 PM EDT Sunday Afternoon lasting through early evening..

Skies have cleared across Western New England including western and central Massachusetts and Connecticut and a moderately strong cold front is expected to approach this region during the mid to late afternoon and evening. Wind shear profiles while stronger behind the front are still expected to be sufficient for strong to severe thunderstorm development along with good cooling of air aloft allowing for higher instability levels given the temperature difference at the surface and in upper levels of the atmosphere. This should allow for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorm development in western New England and as it moves into Eastern New England it should weaken but an isolated strong thunderstorm may develop in this area as the cold front swings through the region. This is unlikely to be a widespread event but more isolated to scattered in nature with the greatest risk across the Connecticut River Valley of Western Massachusetts and Connecticut and points west.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Boston/Norton will likely commence by 2 PM EDT Sunday Afternoon lasting through early evening. This will be the last coordination message as we move into operations mode.
