Storm Coordination Message #1 – Monday 2/3/14 and Late Tuesday Night 2/4/14-Wednesday PM 2/5/14 Storm Events

Hello to all..

..Active Winter Weather Pattern for Early This Week Featuring a Storm System for Southern parts of the area Monday Morning through Monday Evening and a second system that will affect much of Southern New England late Tuesday Night through Wednesday Afternoon..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 AM to 7 PM today for Northeast Connecticut, Southern Bristol and Southern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts, Rhode Island except for Block Island for 2-4″ of snow with isolated higher amounts possible. Cape Cod is currently expected to receive 1-2″ of snow but will need to be monitored closely for higher snow amounts especially closest to the Cape Cod Canal. The remainder of the coverage area is expected to receive a dusting to 2″ of snow..
..A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for late Tuesday Night through Wednesday Afternoon for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands for the potential of several inches of snow as well as potential sleet and freezing rain accumulations in southern parts of the Winter Storm Watch area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor today’s storm across the region. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible late Tuesday Night into Wednesday for that Winter Storm Event..

An active winter weather pattern is setting up for this week with a storm system for southern parts of the region today and another stronger winter storm system that will affect much of the NWS Taunton coverage area late Tuesday Night into Wednesday.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Northeast Connecticut, Rhode Island except for Block Island and Southern Bristol and Southern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts from 7 AM-7 PM today for 2-4″ of snow. Isolated higher amounts of snow are possible in the advisory area. While much of the Winter Weather Advisory area is currently above freezing, temperatures will actually fall through the day and any precipitation that starts as rain will changeover to snow. The heavier precipitation area which was expected to stay offshore has trended further north allowing for higher snow accumulations in this area. Over Cape Cod, this changeover may take longer so currently no advisory is in place for this area with snowfall of 1-2″ expected. This will bear watching because if the changeover takes place more quickly, it could result in heavier snowfall over parts of Cape Cod. Outside of the Winter Weather Advisory areas, a Dusting to 2″ of snowfall is expected with the highest amounts closest to the Winter Weather Advisory area.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for late Tuesday Night through Wednesday Afternoon for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands. The potential exists for several inches of snow as well as potential sleet and freezing rain accumulations. Currently, most of the mixed precipitation is expected in the southern half of the Winter Storm Watch area. It is a bit early to get into specific snow an ice accumulation amounts but significant snow and/or sleet/freezing rain amounts are possible. Future coordination messages will further detail this storm threat.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the Monday storm with no further updates planned unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible late Tuesday Night into Wednesday for the second and more significant winter storm and the next coordination message for that system will be posted by 1100 PM this evening. Below are the NWS Taunton Winter Weather Advisory/Winter Storm Watch Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook and the NWS Taunton Snowfall Map for the Monday storm system:

Blizzard/Storm Coordination Message #3 – Tuesday late Afternoon/Evening 1/21/14-Wednesday 1/22/14 Coastal Storm Event

Hello to all..

..Coastal Storm Continues On Track to Southern New England for mid to late Tuesday Afternoon through early Wednesday Afternoon. Blizzard Warnings issued for portions of Southeast Coastal Massachusetts. Additional Winter Weather headlines issued/adjusted as well..
..A Blizzard Warning is now in effect for Eastern and Southern Plymouth County Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands from 7 PM Tuesday Evening through 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for 8-14 Inches snow. In the Blizzard Warning area, sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH and potentially isolated higher wind gusts at the height of the storm could lead to blizzard conditions in this area..
..A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon to 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for Bristol County, the remainder of Plymouth County, Essex, Middlesex, Worcester, Suffolk, and Norfolk Counties of Massachusetts, all of Rhode Island and Block Island RI and Northern Connecticut for 6-10 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts possible along east and South Coastal Massachusetts and for sustained winds of 10-25 MPH with gusts to 35-45 MPH with the highest winds in East Coastal and Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon to 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for Eastern Hampshire and Eastern Hampden Counties for 4-8 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 30 MPH..
..A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for all of Southern New Hampshire for the potential of 4-8 Inches of Snow and wind gusts between 20-30 MPH..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Franklin, Western Hampden and Western Hampshire Counties of Massachusetts for 4-6″ of snow and wind gusts to 20 MPH..
..A Wind Chill Advisory is now in effect from 10 PM Tuesday Night to 10 AM Wednesday Morning for Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Central and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts and Tolland and Windham Counties of Connecticut and Cheshire and West-Central Hillsborough Counties of Southern New Hampshire for wind chill readings between -15 and -24 degrees below zero. Areas outside of the Wind Chill Advisory will also be bitterly cold with wind chill readings below zero over portions of tonight and Wednesday Morning.
..SKYWARN Activation in some form is likely late Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Afternoon for snowfall and blizzard condition reports with Ops at NWS Taunton possible..

Computer models continued to converged overnight on the solution closer to the Southern New England coast. With the increased confidence, Blizzard Warnings have now been issued for Eastern and Southern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands. Additional Winter Storm Warnings, Winter Weather Advisories and an expansion of the Winter Storm Watch in Southern New Hampshire were also issued per headlines above with snowfall amount forecasts listed in the headlines. Wind Chill Advisories have been issued for portions of Southern New Hampshire, Western and Central Massachusetts and North-Central and Northeast Connecticut for wind chills between -15 and -24 degrees below zero late tonight through Wednesday Morning. Areas outside of the Wind Chill Advisories could see Wind Chill readings below zero.

While there is the potential for blizzard conditions in the Blizzard Warning area and the potential for near blizzard conditions in the southeast portion of the Winter Storm Warning areas, the snow and strong winds is expected to be a lighter and fluffier snow and winds are not expected to be as strong as the February 2013 blizzard. In fact, conditions are likely to be similar to what was experienced during the blizzard of early January 2014. Isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages will be possible along the Southeast Massachusetts coast line and Cape Cod and the Islands but the extent of any damage from a wind perspective is expected to be less than the February 2013 blizzard. This will continue to be monitored. Like with any larger storm, it is always good to be prepared and have any battery operated and generator equipment prepared just in case and if its not needed, you will be better prepared for the next major storm.

Unlike the early January 2014 blizzard, coastal flooding is not as a big of a threat due to lower astronomical high tides and a wind direction out of the north. Nonetheless, this will be monitored for north facing beaches in East Coastal Massachusetts and Cape Cod at the time of high tide early Wednesday Morning.

SKYWARN Activation in some form is likely late Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Afternoon for snowfall and blizzard condition reports with Ops at NWS Taunton possible. The next coordination message will be posted by 6 PM Tuesday Evening. Hello to all..

..Coastal Storm Track Closer to Southern New England for late Tuesday through midday Wednesday. Blizzard Watches issued for portions of Southeast Coastal Massachusetts. Additional Winter Storm Watches and Warnings issued as well..
..A Blizzard Watch is now in effect for Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts from Tuesday Afternoon to Wednesday Afternoon for 6-10 inches of snow and the potential for blizzard conditions. A Blizzard Watch is also in effect for Southern Plymouth County Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands from Tuesday Afternoon to Wednesday Afternoon for 8-14 inches of snow and the potential for blizzard conditions. In the Blizzard Watch area, sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 45-50 MPH at the height of the storm could lead to blizzard conditions in this area..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon to 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for Bristol County, the remainder of Plymouth County Massachusetts, all of Rhode Island and Block Island RI except for far Northwest Rhode Island for sustained winds of 10-25 MPH with gusts to 40-45 MPH and 6-10″ of snow with isolated higher amounts possible..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon to 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for North-Central and Northeast Connecticut, Northwest Providence County Rhode Island, Southern Worcester, Southeast and Central Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex Counties for 4-8 inches of snow and sustained winds of 10-20 MPH with gusts to 35 MPH..
..A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Afternoon for Hartford County Connecticut, Hillsborough County New Hampshire, Northern Worcester, Northern Middlesex, Eastern Hampshire and Eastern Hampden County Massachusetts for 4-8 inches of snow..
..SKYWARN Activation in some form is likely late Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Afternoon for snowfall and blizzard condition reports with Ops at NWS Taunton possible..

Computer models over the course of the day today have converged on a solution closer to the Southern New England coast over the course of the day. This has increased the potential impact of this coastal storm across the region. Winter Storm Watches for Eastern Plymouth County and Cape Cod and the Islands have been upgraded to Blizzard Watches with Winter Storm Warnings now posted for much of Eastern Massachusetts, North-Central and Northeast Connecticut, and all of Rhode Island except for Northwest Rhode Island. A Winter Storm Watch has now been issued for Hartford County Connecticut, Hillsborough County New Hampshire, Northern Worcester, Northern Middlesex, Eastern Hampshire and Eastern Hampden Counties of Massachusetts. Snowfall total and impacts for the Blizzard Watch, Winter Storm Warning and Winter storm Watch areas are highlighted above.

While there is the potential for blizzard conditions in the Blizzard Watch area and the potential for near blizzard conditions in the southeast portion of the Winter Storm Warning areas, the snow and strong winds is expected to be a lighter and fluffier snow and winds are not expected to be as strong as the February 2013 blizzard. Storm Coordination Message #1 – Tuesday Evening 1/21/14-Wednesday 1/22/14 Winter Storm Event

Hello to all..

..Coastal Storm Currently Expected to Pass Close Enough to Southern New England to bring accumulating snow with significant snowfall possible in South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Cape Cod and the Islands. Storm Track has higher than normal uncertainty..
..A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Cape Cod and the Islands from Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Morning for 4-8 inches of snow. Other areas of Eastern New England, have the potential to see 2-4″ of snow. To the west, a dusting to 2 inches of snow is possible..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation to monitor for snowfall amounts is likely Tuesday Evening and Wednesday Morning especially in the Winter Storm Watch area..

Computer model runs still have some disparity so there is higher than normal uncertainty at this time range but are gradually converging on a solution that could potentially bring significant snowfall to South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Cape Cod and the Islands. A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Cape Cod and the Islands for Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Morning for 4-8 inches of snow. Across other areas of Eastern New England, there is the potential for 2-4 inches of snow. Lesser amounts of a Dusting to 2 inches are possible in northern and western parts of the NWS Taunton coverage area.

Computer Model runs over the last few cycles have trended slightly closer to the coast bringing the potential for heavy snowfall to South Coastal New England. A track closer to the coast can bring that heavier snowfall to South Coastal New England and points further inland. A track further away from the coast will mean lesser amounts inland and confining the significant snowfall to southeast New England.

SKYWARN Self-Activation to monitor for snowfall amounts is likely Tuesday Evening and Wednesday Morning especially in the Winter Storm Watch area. Another coordination message will be issued by 11 PM this evening. Below is the NWS Taunton Winter Storm Watch Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook and Snowfall Map:

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Saturday 1/18/14 Winter Storm Event

Hello to all..

..Accumulating Snow for Portions of the NWS Taunton Coverage Area through this evening..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect through 7 PM Saturday Evening for Cheshire and Western and Central Hillsborough County New Hampshire and Franklin, Hampshire, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow with isolated higher amounts possible. The heaviest snow is expected between 11 AM-3 PM today..
..Areas just south and east of the advisory area from Eastern Hillsborough County New Hampshire to Southern Worcester County through Central and Southeast Middlesex, Western Essex Counties of Massachusetts are expected to receive a Dusting to 2″ of snow due to rain mixing in with the snow.
