Storm Coordination Message #3 – Sunday AM 2/24/19 Wintry Mix and Late Sunday Night 2/24/19-Monday Evening 2/25/19 Damaging Wind Potential

Hello to all…

..A wintry mix of precipitation is continuing across Western and Northern Massachusetts and will change to rain before ending in these areas. Of greater concern is the development of damaging winds across all of Southern New England late Sunday Night and especially Monday..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 AM for Franklin, Northern Worcester, Northern Middlesex, Western Hampshire and Western Hampden Counties for light icing. Winter Weather Advisories for other parts of Southern New England has expired with the changeover to rain in these areas..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 10 PM Sunday Evening through 7 PM Monday Evening for Northern Connecticut, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden and Worcester Counties of Massachusetts and from 3 AM to 7 PM Monday for the rest of the NWS Norton coverage area for sustained winds of 20-40 MPH with gusts to 60-65 MPH and a few isolated wind gusts higher than 65 MPH possible. These winds will be sufficient to cause scattered to potentially numerous pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered to numerous power outages..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the wintry mix conditions overnight into Sunday Morning. SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely late Sunday Night into Monday Evening with the potential for Ops at NWS Boston/Norton during the day Monday for the damaging wind potential and the operations plan for Monday’s damaging wind potential will be defined later today..

The headlines depict the current potential with the storm system for late tonight through Sunday Afternoon in terms of the wintry mix and then of more concern is the damaging wind potential for the region late Sunday Night into Monday Evening where High Wind Watches have been upgraded to High Wind Warnings for the entire coverage area. The strongest winds will be during the day on Monday and there is the potential for wind gusts even stronger than the 60-65 MPH gusts in at least isolated areas. Very strong wind fields aloft, good mixing capability to bring the winds down to the surface and a very significant pressure difference between the storm to our northwest that is deepening and the high pressure system will allow for these damaging winds in the region.

SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely late Sunday Night into Monday Evening with the potential for Ops at NWS Boston/Norton during the day Monday for the damaging wind potential and the operations plan for Monday’s damaging wind potential will be defined later today. Another coordination message will be posted by 10 PM Sunday Evening. Storm Coordination Message #1 – Wednesday Night 2/20/19-Thursday Morning 2/21/19

Hello to all…

..Storm system will create a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain, which will change to rain along and southeast of a Boston to Providence line in Southeast New England tonight into Thursday Morning..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 PM Wednesday Evening to 7 AM Thursday Morning for the entire NWS Boston/Norton coverage area except for Cape Cod and the Islands for up to 2″ of snow and a trace to one-tenth inch of icing creating slippery travel conditions..
..There is the potential for minor coastal flooding at the time of the midday Thursday high tide in East Coastal Massachusetts due to the high astronomical tide cycle despite winds that are not very strong..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-up nets will monitor the wintry mix tonight into early Thursday Morning. SKYWARN Self-activation will also monitor the minor coastal flood potential for the midday Thursday high tide. This will likely be the only coordination message on this storm unless a significant upgrade to the situation has occurred and time allows for an update. Storm Coordination Message #2 – Sunday Night 2/17/19-Monday Afternoon 2/18/19 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Plowable Moderate Snowstorm becoming likely for portions of Southern New England Sunday Night into Monday..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 11 PM Sunday Evening through 4 PM Monday Afternoon for Providence, Kent and Bristol Counties of Rhode Island and Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Southeast Massachusetts for 4-7″ of snow. South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island locations in the warning area could be on the lower end of amounts if sleet and rain mixes in but that’s currently expected to be south of that area..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 11 PM Sunday Evening through 4 PM Monday Afternoon for Newport and Washington Counties of Rhode Island and Barnstable County (Cape Cod) Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow and this area may see the snow mix with a period of sleet and rain for a time during the day on Monday. If the mix does not occur, amounts could be slightly higher into the Winter Storm Warning range of other parts of Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Massachusetts and Block Island Rhode Island from 11 PM Sunday Evening through 4 PM Monday Afternoon for 2-4″ of snow and this area will see the snow mix with sleet and rain for a time during the day on Monday..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Midnight to 4 PM Monday for Franklin, Hampshire, Northern Worcester, Middlesex Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 PM Sunday Evening to 1 PM Monday Afternoon for Northern Connecticut, Hampden and Southern Worcester Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with periodic Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets will monitor for snowfall totals around the region starting with the Cape & Islands Weather Net at 600 AM Monday Morning..

A storm system is looking like it will come close enough to Southern New England for accumulating snowfall and a plowable, moderate snowstorm for portions of Southern New England particularly along and south of the Mass Pike. The headlines depict the latest thinking. Key factors for this storm system include:

1.) The track of the storm system as a track further north and west means more snow for the region while a storm track further south and east means less snowfall for the region.
2.) Where any bands of heavier snow may setup including any ocean enhancement with Northeast to North-Northeast flow over Southeastern New England and potentially portions of Northeast Massachusetts.
3.) Model have held the trend of the higher snowfall amounts from the shift in model guidance that was seen starting Saturday Afternoon.
4.) There is some chance for a sleet and rain mix along parts of South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The headlines reflect current thinking but could slightly change depending on the storm track, intensity of precipitation and where the rain/snow line ultimately sets up.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with periodic Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets will monitor for snowfall totals around the region starting with the Cape & Islands Weather Net at 600 AM Monday Morning. This will be the last coordination message on this storm event as we shift into operations mode. Storm Coordination Message #3 – Tuesday PM 2/12/18-Wednesday AM 2/13/18 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Moderate Snowstorm and/or Wintry Mix expected in interior Southern New England Tuesday Afternoon through Wednesday Morning. The evening commute will be significantly impacted by high snowfall rates before a changeover to a wintry mix inland and a wintry mix to rain in coastal areas..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon through 7 AM Wednesday Morning for Franklin, Northern Worcester, Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 4-7 inches of snow/sleet and one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch from a wintry mix of heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon through 1 AM Wednesday Morning for Norfolk, Suffolk, and Northwest Providence Counties of Rhode Island for 3-5″ of snow and a trace to one tenth of an inch of ice from a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 1 PM Tuesday Afternoon through 11 PM Tuesday Evening for Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts including Cape Cod for 1-4″ of snow and a light glaze of ice. Southeast coastal areas may see wind gusts around 40 MPH as the storm intensifies and tracks over the region..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-up nets will monitor the winter storm for snowfall reports and precipitation type changeover reports Tuesday Afternoon into Wednesday Morning..

A moderate snowstorm and wintry mix is expected across Southern New England Tuesday Afternoon into Wednesday Morning with significant snowfall rates of 1-2″ per hour affecting the region during the late afternoon and evening commute that will bear close watching. The headlines depict the current thinking with the Winter Storm Watch converted to a Winter Storm Warning in Northwest, North-Central and Northeast Massachusetts and Winter Weather Advisories posted elsewhere. Key factors for this storm system remain when does the changeover from heavy snow to mixed precipitation occur across the region. Just 1-2 hours difference in the changeover in precipitation type could make the difference between higher snow accumulations versus more sleet and freezing rain. The latest high resolution model data has been incorporated to convert the Winter Storm Watch to Warnings and advisories where needed.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the winter storm Tuesday Afternoon into Wednesday Morning. This will be the last coordination message on this winter storm potential.
