Overnight tonight through midday Monday, a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain could cause slick travel conditions across much of interior Southern New England. There will be a brief period of snow and ice at the coast but that should quickly change over to rain so no Winter Weather Advisories are posted in this area. Across interior locations, much of interior Southeast Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North-Central and Northeast Connecticut should see a changeover to rain by around midday hence Winter Weather Advisories are in effect through 100 PM Monday. Across parts of Southern New Hampshire, Northern and Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut, it is possible precipitation will remain snow and ice or only have a brief changeover to rain so advisories in this area are through 10 PM Monday Evening. Despite the storm being less than 24 hours away, there is greater uncertainty in this storm forecast and the areas of uncertainty include the timeframes of changeover of precipitation from snow to ice to rain, precipitation amounts of snow, ice and rain given the uncertainty of the timing of the changeover in precipitation types and how heavy the precipitation will be as current radar as of 700 PM shows the heavier precipitation sliding south of the area but steady precipitation should eventually build over Southern New England during the overnight hours.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snow and ice totals and changeover in precipitation type reports during Monday Morning. ..Storm System will affect portions of Southern New England tonight into early Saturday Morning Bringing Accumulating Snow particularly north of the Mass Turnpike. Since SKYWARN Recognition Day will occur and we will have Ops at NWS Taunton for that event, Ops at NWS Taunton will cover this storm event during the evening through around/shortly after Midnight and early Saturday Morning..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 6 PM Friday Evening to 6 AM Saturday Morning for Franklin, Hampshire, Western Hampden, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties for 2-4 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts of 5-6 inches in higher terrain locations in the east slopes of the Berkshires with a trace of ice possible. Precipitation will start as rain, mix with sleet/freezing rain before changing over to snow. Locations along and south of the Mass. Pike should see a Dusting to perhaps as much as 1-2 inches particularly locations closest to the Mass Pike..
..With SKYWARN Recognition Day causing planned operations at WX1BOX, SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will be part of the SRD event. We will be on the air for the event and looking for snowfall and precipitation type reports from 7 PM-12 AM tonight and we will look at coming in a bit earlier Saturday Morning for final snowfall total reports from Amateur Radio Operators and Spotters Saturday Morning. The National Weather Service in Taunton Amateur Radio Station, WX1BOX, will once again be active for SKYWARN Recognition Day 2013. In addition, for the seventh straight year, the National Weather Service Gray, Maine Office will also be active under call-sign, WX1GYX. The Boston Amateur Radio Club will also be active as they have been over the past several years at the NWS Blue Hill Observatory under call-sign W1BOS from 9 AM-3 PM Saturday December 7th, 2013.

This will be the 15th year of SKYWARN Recognition Day and its anticipated that over 100 NWS Forecast Offices will be participating once again this year. A Web link to information on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be seen at the following link:

The following is a schedule of repeaters that will be utilized along with simplex being utilized during certain timeframes on Saturday at WX1BOX. We hope Amateurs will utilize this schedule and try and work WX1BOX during these various timeframes. There have been questions on whether we will utilize HF during SKYWARN Recognition Day. We will be utilizing HF. It is hard to know what bands and frequencies will be utilizing as it will depend on propagation and the amount of stations that we are working on various HF bands as well as operator availability at WX1BOX. A rough guideline is that we will likely be on 40 or 75 Meters during Friday Evening and on 20 Meters during much of the daytime hours Saturday switching to 40 or 75 meters towards evening. We will be sending out Tweets and Facebook status updates on what frequencies will be operating on via HF.

We will also be utilizing 6-Meters FM for the first time during SRD since we now have that functionality in working order at NWS Taunton. The setup is a Vertical Antenna through an Icom IC-706 Radio. The following repeaters and simplex will be utilized during SRD on 6-Meters. This schedule may change as we get closer to the SRD event and 6-Meter use during SRD may expand depending on operator availability etc.

If other NWS offices would like to join the system, they are welcome to do so and participants in SKYWARN Recognition Day can also use that system to make contact with various NWS offices. This is a great place to move off the *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system after your scheduled time if other Amateurs or NWS offices whish to make contact with you.

Also, the Western Reflector will be having NWS offices calling CQ as in past years and have multiple reflector channels and Echolink conferences available. A few technical reminders for folks interested in making contacts with the NWS Forecast Offices on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 and New England Reflector Gateway IRLP 9123/*NEW-ENG* Echolink Node: 9123 systems:

-The system allows both EchoLink and IRLP connections. For EchoLink users, you connect to the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203 conference system. For IRLP users, you would connect to IRLP reflector 9219.

-If you are using EchoLink, the RF node or PC that you’re using must have EchoLink conferencing disabled. If it is not disabled, the system will automatically kick the node or PC off of the system. The reason this occurs is to prevent unintentional interference from a conferencing station that may not know the node is connected somewhere else. This will keep traffic moving on the net and reduce interference considerably.

..Strong Coastal Storm Continues to Be On Track to Impact Southern New England and much of the Northeast and Eastern Seaboard this Wednesday on the busiest travel day of the year. Those traveling on Wednesday should prepare ahead for potential delays due to the weather along with high traffic volume..
..A Flood Watch is now in effect for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands from 1 AM Wednesday through Wednesday Afternoon for widespread 1.5-3″ of rainfall with isolated higher amounts of 4″ possible..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 4 AM to 1 PM Wednesday for Rhode Island, Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH. A Wind Advisory is in effect from Midnight Tonight through 1 PM Wednesday for Northern Connecticut, Central Middlesex, Essex, Eastern Hampden and Southern Worcester Counties for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. A Wind Advisory is also in effect for Cape Cod and the Islands from Midnight Tonight through 7 PM Wednesday for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 55 MPH. A strong coastal storm continues to be on track to impact Southern New England. Since the last coordination message, computer weather models indicate a greater risk for stronger winds reaching the surface in portions of Southern New England as well as for heavy rainfall. There will also be a brief wintry mix over Northwest and North-Central Massachusetts and Southwest New Hampshire.

A Special Weather Statement has been issued concerning the wintry mix which may cause a coating of snow and ice and slippery road conditions until precipitation changes over to rain between 12-3 AM. Also, a Flood Watch is now in effect for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area for widespread 1.5-3″ of rain with isolated higher amounts of 4″ possible as well. This heavy rainfall has the potential to cause poor drainage and urban flooding as well as small river and stream flooding. Larger main stem rivers will have sharp within bank rises but are not expected to flood.

Portions of the Wind Advisory area have now been upgraded to High Wind Warnings as well with Wind Advisories expanded further west across Central Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut. A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 4 AM to 1 PM Wednesday for Rhode Island, Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH. A Wind Advisory is in effect from Midnight Tonight through 1 PM Wednesday for Northern Connecticut, Central Middlesex, Essex, Eastern Hampden and Southern Worcester Counties for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. Anyone traveling on Wednesday should plan for the adverse weather conditions in addition to heavy road traffic. This may cause longer commute times and other air and sea travel may be impacted by the adverse weather as well. Call ahead if your are traveling by boat and/or air Wednesday. If you are traveling outside of Southern New England and Eastern New York into Northern and Western New York and Northern New England, wintry mixed precipitation will last longer with several inches of snow accumulation. Towards the ski areas of Northern New England/Northeast New York and Northern Maine, amounts greater than 6″ of snow and ice are likely. Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of these regions.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence between 4-5 AM EST for this strong coastal storm.  This will be the last coordination message on this storm system impacts through Wednesday Evening. If strong winds and any light wintry mixed precipitation as the system moves out of the area have the potential to cause issues, another coordination message will be issued on those impacts late Wednesday Afternoon or Wednesday Evening. ..Strong Coastal Storm On Track Impact Southern New England and much of the Northeast and Eastern Seaboard this Wednesday on the busiest travel day of the year. Those traveling on Wednesday should prepare ahead for potential delays due to the weather along with high traffic volume..
..In Southern New England, the impacts will be largely from Heavy Rainfall with urban and poor drainage flooding from 1.5-3″ of rainfall with isolated rainfall amounts of up 4 inches after a very brief period of snow or freezing rain at the start in far northwest areas as well as the potential for strong to damaging winds. South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island may see minor splashover at the time of high tide Wednesday Afternoon..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from Midnight tonight through Midnight Wednesday Night for Windham County CT, Rhode Island and all of Eastern Massachusetts except for extreme Northern Middlesex County for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts of 50-55 MPH. These winds will have the potential to cause pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages. Higher Winds may be possible depending on how much of the stronger winds can reach the surface. Higher terrain locations west of the Wind Advisory may also see strong winds as well and this will be monitored as we get closer to the storm event..

..Bitterly Cold Air for the month of November and Strong Winds Will Impact Southern New England Sunday into early Monday Morning with a few snow showers overnight into this morning causing a dusting of snow in parts of North-Central interior Massachusetts and with a period of ocean effect snow over Outer Cape Cod..
..A Wind Advisory remains in effect through 1 AM Monday Morning for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area for Sustained Winds 25-35 MPH with gusts to 45-50 MPH with isolated higher wind gusts possible. These winds may cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages. Also, the dry conditions and strong winds will pose an increased fire weather risk despite the very cold temperatures that can deter fire weather conditions. Red Flag Warnings have been posted for Rhode Island and Northern Connecticut with an elevated Fire Weather Risk statement posted for portions of Massachusetts..
..Looking ahead, a coastal storm system is looking more likely to impact Southern New England on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving which is the busiest travel day of the year. Latest model runs are starting to converge that the storm will impact Southern New England. It is looking like the storm situation will be one that is mostly rain for Southern New England though higher terrain locations in the north and west may see snow or a wintry mix before a changeover to rain. It is still a bit early to discuss impacts from this storm more specifically. As we get closer to Wednesday, future model runs should give us a better determination on potential conditions for Wednesday and coordination messages will be initiated as required for this storm event..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the strong winds throughout the day Sunday. Ops at NWS Taunton are unlikely at this time but will continue to be monitored. This will be the last coordination message on the strong winds for today unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs.
