Flash Flood/Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday July 11th, 2013 Flash Flood/Severe Weather Potential

..Thunderstorms with flood to flash flood potential and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms possible throughout the day today across much of Southern New England. Urban/poor drainage and small river/stream flooding and strong to damaging winds are the primary threats..
..A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Thursday Afternoon for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor thunderstorms this Thursday Morning with Ops at NWS Taunton possible. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible for a second round of thunderstorms this Thursday afternoon and evening..

Yesterday, enough sunshine and destabilization occurred to allow for severe thunderstorm development in Connecticut with a possible tornado touchdown in the Coventry to Mansfield, CT area and a possible weak touchdown in Tolland Connecticut from a separate severe thunderstorm. Flash Flooding also occurred in the Hartford, CT area. A NWS Taunton Local Storm Report can be seen at the following link:

As of 710 AM, Doppler Radar showed developing thunderstorms in the area. These thunderstorms will contain heavy rainfall and the potential for flooding of urban and poor drainage areas and small rivers and streams this morning with an isolated strong or severe thunderstorm possibly producing strong to damaging winds. After these thunderstorms move through, another round of thunderstorm activity potentially producing flooding of urban and poor drainage areas and small rivers and streams and another threat for strong to damaging winds is possible later this afternoon into this evening. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Thursday Afternoon for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor thunderstorms this Thursday Morning with Ops at NWS Taunton possible. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible for a second round of thunderstorms this Thursday afternoon and evening. This will be the only complete coordination message on today’s threat. The high pressure system that brought a heat wave to much of Southern New England has weakened a bit and has slid further south. This has allowed a stalled out upper level low pressure system that was to the west of the region and had brought several days of thunderstorms, flash flooding, and severe weather to begin influencing out weather again resulting in isolated severe weather across interior Southern New England Sunday.

As we get into Monday, another round of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and flash flood potential and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible to likely today across much of interior Southern New England as another wave of energy approaches the region and allows for thunderstorm development with heavy rainfall and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms to develop. Urban/poor drainage flooding, small river/stream flooding, strong to damaging winds and hail are the primary threats. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Southern New Hampshire, Western and North-Central Massachusetts and North-Central Connecticut from 11 AM today to Midnight Tuesday.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely anytime after Noon today. This will be the only complete coordination message on today’s threat. Monday July 1st brought the most widespread severe weather outbreak and flash flood event of 2013. If there are any more damage or flood pictures from yesterday’s events, please send as a reply to this email or to pics@nsradio.org and credit will be given to the spotter for the pictures and it will be shared with NWS, the media, and emergency management. For today, the setup is fairly similar to yesterday. There is sufficient instability, slightly greater than yesterday, and sufficient shear, though slightly less than yesterday, to allow for thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and flood/flash flood potential and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across much of Southern New England with urban poor drainage, small river, and stream flooding and damaging winds as the primary threats. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through Wednesday Morning for Southern New Hampshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts and Hartford County Connecticut. While flooding and flash flooding is a more widespread concern, the isolated to scattered severe thunderstorm threat is also a concern for today.

..Severe Thunderstorms caused pockets of wind damage and a confirmed EF-1 Tornado in Windsor Locks-East Windsor-Windsor, CT and a 80 MPH Microburst in Agawam, Massachusetts along with wind damage and flooding in the North Shore of Massachusetts. ..Another round of thunderstorms with flood and flash flood potential and Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail potential again across much of Southern New England this afternoon and evening..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed portions of New England from Western Massachusetts northward through Southern New Hampshire in a Slight Risk for Severe Weather but all areas should monitor for thunderstorms with flood/flash flood potential and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail as the primary threats..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence at 1 PM EDT Saturday through evening to monitor flood/flash flood and severe weather potential..

Early this morning, south coastal Massachusetts from the Westport, Dartmouth, New Bedford and Fairhaven area through Cape Cod had a severe thunderstorm move through the area with pockets of wind damage, flooding and ground strikes of lightning as it went through the area. Another area of briefly heavy rain will affect this area over the next couple hours.

Satellite imagery shows significant clearing working its way through portions of Connecticut, Western Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. It is unclear how much further east the clearing will go but this clearing will allow for the atmosphere to destabilize and combined with good shear profiles will bring about another round of thunderstorms with flood and flash flood potential and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail potential as well. The greatest risk area appears to be across Southwest New Hampshire, Western and Central Massachusetts and Connecticut but eastern areas should monitor as well. SPC has placed the area from Western Massachusetts to Southern New Hampshire northward into Northern New England in a Slight Risk for Severe Weather today.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence at 1 PM EDT Saturday through evening to monitor flood/flash flood and severe weather potential. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Friday June 28th, 2013 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all..

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with flood to flash flood potential for urban areas and small rivers/streams, damaging winds and large hail possible this Friday Afternoon and Evening across Southwest New Hampshire, Western and Central Massachusetts, Connecticut and possibly into Rhode Island depending on amount of clearing and heating that develops later today. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has this region in a Slight Risk for Severe Weather today..
..A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for all of the NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible again this Friday Afternoon and Evening..

Thursday Evening into Friday Morning, some heavy rainfall occurred across Western Massachusetts into Western Connecticut with amounts of 1-2.5″ occurring. Amounts of around or less than 1″ occurred north and east of these locations. Central Hartford County Connecticut was impacted with flash flooding near the time of the evening commute Thursday Evening and SKYWARN Ops were active during that timeframe. Overnight the progressive nature of the rainfall kept significant flooding from occurring and most of the synoptic rainfall went into Eastern New York State.

As we get into today’s potential activity, there are a few showers and thunderstorms with brief heavy rainfall in the area this morning. These are expected to move out and weather models are expecting drier air at the mid-levels to cause skies to clear particularly over Southwest New Hampshire, Western and Central Massachusetts and Connecticut possibly into Rhode Island. If this clearing occurs as expected, this will set the stage for thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and flood/flash flood potential for urban areas and small streams and isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and large hail as well. SPC has placed this area in a Slight Risk for Severe Weather for today. Shear profiles would be sufficient to support severe weather potential but the key for today will be the amount of heating and destabilization and clearing that occurs. Satellite imagery as of 830 AM were showing signs of clearing and clouds thinning across parts of Eastern New York and the mid-atlantic and that may enter parts of western and central New England later today.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible again this Friday Afternoon and Evening. This will be the only complete coordination message on today’s threat. A shortened coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops at NWS Taunton are initiated.
