Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Wednesday 6/14/23 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms remain possible Wednesday Afternoon and Evening in Western and Central Massachusetts, Northwest Rhode Island and Connecticut anytime between 2-9 PM Wednesday with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall with the potential for localized urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has continued this area in a marginal risk for severe weather for Wednesday Afternoon and Evening..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the severe weather potential for Wednesday Afternoon and Evening..

An upper level Low pressure system will move into Southern New England as we get into mid to late afternoon and early evening. The upper level low will bring cooling temperatures aloft and marginally sufficient wind shear for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cooling aloft with max heating of the day or the degree the cooling aloft can offset loss of heating if that cooling occurs past the time of peak heating.
2.) The forcing and trigger mechanisms from the upper level low reaching our area of Southern New England near the time of peak heating to allow for strong to severe thunderstorm development.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the severe weather potential for Wednesday Afternoon and Evening. This will be the last coordination message as we move into operations mode unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs and time allows for an update.
