Storm Coordination Message #1 – Saturday Night 3/9/24 Through Sunday Morning 3/10/24 Storm Hazards
Hello to all…
..Strong storm system will bring a period of heavy rain to much of Southern New England with rainfall amounts of around 1-2″, minor to possibly moderate coastal flooding at the time of high tide depending on the timing of strong winds to overlap with the Sunday Morning high tide and strong to damaging winds in parts of Southeast coastal New England. There is also the potential for higher elevation snow across Northern Massachusetts and the East slopes of the Berkshires. At this time, its expected to be below Winter Weather Advisory levels with a coating to 2″ of snow but this will be monitored..
..A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect from Sunday Morning through Sunday Afternoon for Southern Bristol, Southern Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, Nantucket Counties of Massachusetts, Southeast Providence, Eastern Kent, Bristol, Washington and Newport Counties of Rhode Island for minor to moderate coastal flooding at the time of high tide and the potential for road closures due to coastal flooding..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Eastern Essex, Suffolk, Eastern Norfolk, and Eastern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts from 6 AM-3 PM Sunday for minor coastal flooding of shore roads at the time of high tide with a few road closures possible..
..A Wind Advisory is in effect from from 12 AM to 10 PM Sunday for Barnstable and Nantucket Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds 25-35 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH and isolated higher gusts possible. These winds will likely cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages. Areas outside of the wind advisory along East Coastal and Southeast coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island could see wind gusts of 40-45 MPH..
..The rainfall is expected to keep rivers where river flood warnings are in effect in flood for a longer period of time but any additional flooding beyond the rivers already impacted is low at this time except for brief urban and poor drainage flooding in typical locations in areas of heaviest rainfall..
.. SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for Rain Gauge reports 1″ or more, any flooding from heavy rainfall, any snowfall measurements in the Northwest Massachusetts higher elevations, coastal flooding and wind damage potential overnight into Sunday Morning. Pictures and videos of storm damage and flooding can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. If time allows, another coordination message will be posted by 11 PM this evening.
