Storm Coordination Message #4 – Late Sunday Afternoon 1/19/25-Early Monday Morning 1/20/25 Moderate Snowstorm Potential

Hello to all…

..Moderate Snowstorm likely for much of Southern New England late Sunday Afternoon into early Monday Morning followed by bitter cold conditions, the coldest of the season, for several days next week..
..A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 1 PM Sunday Afternoon to 7 AM Monday Morning for Hartford, Tolland Counties of Connecticut, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow with isolated higher amounts of up to 10″. The heaviest snow is expected to occur between 6 PM Sunday Evening to 1 AM Monday Morning give or take 1-2 hours..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 PM Sunday Afternoon to 7 AM Monday Morning Sunday Afternoon to Monday Morning for Windham County Connecticut, Providence County Rhode Island, Norfolk and Suffolk Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow. with isolated higher amounts..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 1 PM Sunday Afternoon to 7 AM Monday Morning for Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts, Kent, Bristol, Newport and Washington Counties of Rhode Island for 3-6″ of snow with isolated higher amounts. Areas outside of the Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory areas could see anywhere from a coating to 3″ of snow and should due to rain at the start mixing and changing to snow. This area should monitor in case an earlier change to snow allows for higher amounts..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets likely Sunday Evening for in-storm snowfall amounts and Monday Morning for final snowfall amounts. A preliminary Amateur Radio Net schedule for gathering snowfall reports is posted before the warning/advisory info in this message and will be finalized later this afternoon. Pictures and videos of the storm can be sent as a reply to this message, via the WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

Confidence is higher in a moderate snowstorm for much of Southern New England. Finer details where higher bands of snow could setup remains uncertain and spotter reports will help to point out these areas. There remains high confidence in bitter cold conditions, the coldest of the season, after the storm has passed the region. The headlines depict current thinking with key factors for the moderate snowstorm including:

1.) The track of the storm system is more certain now with a bit more of an offshore solution resulting in Winter Storm Warnings through the Boston to Providence area and Winter Weather advisories for Central and Southern Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts north and west of Cape Cod. There remains some variance in the storm track that is a bit larger than usual but the headlines reflect the current thinking.
2.) The intensity of the storm system still has some variance in the models that is a bit larger than usual for being less than 12 hours from the storm start but are more similar than previous runs and coalescing around a solution that would allow for a several hour period of 1-2″ per hour snows with the timeframe for that heaviest snow between 6 PM Sunday Evening and 1 AM Monday Morning give or take 1-2 hours.
3.) The storm is expected to be progressive meaning snow occurring for a 10-15 hour period with the snow starting late Sunday Afternoon heaviest Sunday Evening and overnight ending by early Monday Morning between 6-10 AM. The timing will continue to be monitored.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets likely Sunday Evening for in-storm snowfall amounts and Monday Morning for final snowfall amounts. The Amateur Radio Net schedule for gathering snowfall reports is listed below:

146.940-Mount Tom Repeater: Hourly Nets 6-11 PM Sunday Evening, Final Snowfall Total Nets 7 and 9 AM Monday Morning
146.970-Paxton Repeater: 630 PM, 830 PM, 1030 PM Sunday Evening, Final Snowfall Total Nets at 730 and 930 AM Monday Morning
146.790-Vernon CT Repeater: Nets will be scheduled between 6-11 PM and 700-1000 AM – Exact Net Schedule will be posted in a short coordination message
NB1RI Rhode Island Repeater System: Nets will be scheduled between 6-11 PM and 700-1000 AM – Exact Net Schedule will be posted in a short coordination message
147.225-Windham CT Repeater: Schedule TBD
145.470-Danvers Repeater: Schedule TBD
146.895-Walpole Repeater: 7 PM, 8 PM is the Norfolk County Emergency Preparedness Weekly Net, 9 and/or 10 PM, 7 AM Monday Morning
146.955-Westford Repeater: Schedule TBD
147.180-Bridgewater Repeater: Schedule TBD
147.000-Dartmouth Repeater: Schedule TBD

Pictures and videos of the storm can be sent as a reply to this message, via the WX1BOX Facebook and X feeds or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. This will be the final complete coordination message as we shift into operations mode, a shortened coordination message referring to this message will be posted with the complete SKYWARN Snowfall Reporting Net Schedule. Storm Coordination Message #3 – Late Sunday Afternoon 1/19/25-Early Monday Morning 1/20/25 Moderate Snowstorm Potential

Hello to all…

..Moderate Snowstorm likely for much of Southern New England late Sunday Afternoon into early Monday Morning followed by bitter cold conditions, the coldest of the season, for several days next week..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 PM Sunday Afternoon to 7 AM Monday Morning for Hartford, Tolland Counties of Connecticut, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow with isolated higher amounts of up to 10″. The heaviest snow is expected to occur between 6 PM Sunday Evening to 1 AM Monday Morning give or take 1-2 hours..
..A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday Afternoon to Monday Morning for Windham County Connecticut, Providence County Rhode Island, Norfolk and Suffolk Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow. Areas outside of the Winter Storm Watch area could see at least a plowable snowfall depending on the track and intensity of the storm..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets likely Sunday Evening for in-storm snowfall amounts and Monday Morning for final snowfall amounts. The Amateur Radio Net schedule for gathering snowfall reports will be posted in the Sunday Morning coordination message. Pictures and videos of the storm can be sent as a reply to this message, via the WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

Confidence continues to grow in a moderate snowstorm for much of Southern New England though there still remains larger than normal model spread for a storm to affect the region in less than 24 hours. There remains high confidence in bitter cold conditions, the coldest of the season, after the storm has passed the region. The headlines depict current thinking with key factors for the moderate snowstorm including:

1.) The track of the storm system. Models have been coalescing with a bit more with the American GFS and Canadian model a bit more south and east and the European and American NAM short-range guidance a bit further north and west. This prompted much of the Winter Storm Watch area to be converted into a Warning with Winter Storm Watches expanded to the Boston to Providence corridor. A plowable snow is still possible for portions of Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A track closer to the coast would be more mixing issues and lower amounts in Eastern New England, particularly Southeast New England, while a further offshore solution could slide the heaviest snowfall further east. This will continue to bear watching as we get closer to the event with the trend coalescing a bit more offshore in current model runs.
2.) The intensity of the storm system. Models are coalescing to a similar intensity which could allow for a several hour period of 1-2″ per hour snows with the timeframe for that heaviest snow between 6 PM Sunday Evening and 1 AM Monday Morning give or take 1-2 hours.
3.) The storm is expected to be progressive meaning snow occurring for a 10-15 hour period with the snow starting late Sunday Afternoon heaviest Sunday Evening and overnight ending by early Monday Morning between 7-10 AM. The timing will continue to be monitored.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets likely Sunday Evening for in-storm snowfall amounts and Monday Morning for final snowfall amounts. Pictures and videos of the storm can be sent as a reply to this message, via the WX1BOX Facebook and X feeds or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. Storm Coordination Message #2 – Late Sunday Afternoon 1/19/25-Early Monday Morning 1/20/25 Moderate Snowstorm Potential

Hello to all…

..Moderate Snowstorm possible to likely for portions of Southern New England late Sunday Afternoon into early Monday Morning followed by bitter cold conditions, the coldest of the season, for several days next week..
..A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday Afternoon to Monday Morning for Northern Connecticut, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts and is now expanded into Essex, Central and Southeast Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow.
Pictures and videos of the storm can be sent as a reply to this message, via the WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

Confidence continues to grow in a moderate snowstorm for portions of Southern New England though exact areas and how widespread remain uncertain due to model spread with high confidence in bitter cold conditions, the coldest of the season, after the storm has passed the region. The headlines depict current thinking with key factors for the moderate snowstorm including:

1.) The track of the storm system. Model spread is essentially in two camps with one set of reliable models, the American GFS and Canadian model favoring heaviest snow and perhaps even isolated higher amounts over 8″ in portions of the current Winter Storm Watch area while the European and short-range American Model are more offshore and a bit weaker with a plowable snowfall for much of the area including Southeast Massachusetts. Currently, the heaviest snow is still expected in the Winter Storm Watch area now expanded into Northeast Massachusetts with a plowable snow still possible for portions of Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island. A track closer to the coast would be more mixing issues and lower amounts in Eastern New England, particularly Southeast New England, while a further offshore solution could slide the heaviest snowfall further east. This will continue to bear watching as we get closer to the event.
2.) The intensity of the storm system. The American GFS and Canadian model favor a stronger system while the European and short-range American model is a bit weaker with the system.
3.) The storm is expected to be progressive meaning snow occurring for a 10-15 hour period with the snow starting late Sunday Afternoon heaviest Sunday Evening and overnight ending by early Monday Morning between 7-10 AM. The timing will be monitored.

1.) The track of the storm system. A track closer to the coast would be more mixing issues and lower amounts in Eastern New England while a further offshore solution could slide the heaviest snowfall further east. This will bear watching as we get closer to the event.

Happy New Year to all Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters. We look forward to working with all of you again in the new year. The headlines depict the latest on the overnight rainfall and the strong to damaging wind potential for Wednesday Night into Thursday Night in the region. The key factors on the strong to damaging wind potential remain as follows:

1.) Strong mixing of the air allowing the strongest potential wind gusts of 60 MPH reaching the surface particularly in Western and Central Massachusetts.
2.) The prolonged nature of the strong wind gusts allowing for additional pockets of wind damage over a longer period of time.
3.) Whether wind gusts at the coast will be as strong as what we see farther inland in the higher elevations.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for final rain gauge reports from the ovenright period. SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the potential strong to damaging winds for Wednesday Evening through Thursday Evening across Southern New England. Pictures and videos of wind damage can be sent as a reply to this message, via our WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds and to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. An updated coordination message will be posted by 11 PM Wednesday Evening if any changes or upgrades to the situation occur and time allows for an update.
