Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Friday 8/29/25 Strong Thunderstorm/Isolated Severe Thunderstorm Potential

Hello to all…

..Scattered Strong thunderstorms with an isolated severe thunderstorm or two are possible to likely during the day Friday particularly during the afternoon and evening. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lighting and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding are the main threats. While a strong thunderstorm cannot be ruled out during the morning hours, the main threat for this activity is between 12-9 PM Friday Afternoon and Evening as a cold front sweeps through the area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets possible to monitor the strong to isolated severe thunderstorm potential for Friday. This will be the only message on today’s potential unless a significant update to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Storm Coordination Message #1 – Convective Shower/Isolated Thunderstorm Small Hail/Graupel/Brief Strong Wind Gust Potential

Hello to all…

..Convective Showers and Isolated Thunderstorms will be capable of small hail/graupel and perhaps some brief strong wind gusts this Wednesday afternoon and evening in Southern New England as cooling temperatures aloft allow for conditions that may allow for some of this activity. The severe weather potential is low but reportable SKYWARN reporting conditions are possible this afternoon and evening in western areas through around 4 PM and in eastern areas mid-PM through 7 PM this evening..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for any hail and strong wind gusts/isolated wind damage reports this Wednesday Afternoon and Evening with Amateur Radio call-up nets possible. Pictures of any storm damage and hail can be sent as a reply to this message, via our WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. This will be the only coordination message for this event unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Sunday PM & Evening 8/17/25 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..A cold front will approach Southern New England Sunday Afternoon and Evening setting the stage for Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has continued much of Southern New England in a marginal risk for severe weather. Timeframe for severe weather is between 3-10 PM ET Sunday..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are possible to likely for Sunday Afternoon and Evening. Pictures and videos of storm damage, hail, and flooding can be sent as a reply to this email, via our WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

Little to no change to the previous thinking from Sunday. One more day of heat and humidity before a cold front moves into the area Sunday Afternoon and Evening. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cold front into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of high instability despite weak wind shear profiles.
2.) Frontal forcing and instability to offset weaker wind shear, though wind shear is slightly stronger than the severe weather events earlier in the week, and a few other unfavorable severe weather parameters.
3.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. They will be isolated to scattered with pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.

Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday PM/Evening 8/14/25 – Flood/Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..A second cold front will approach Southern New England Thursday Afternoon and Evening setting the stage for thunderstorms with frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to localized urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats but can’t rule out Isolated Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds and hail as well with the main threat area across central and eastern parts of Southern New England. Timeframe is in the 2-9 PM ET Thursday Afternoon and Evening timeframe..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are possible to likely for Thursday Afternoon and Evening. Pictures and videos of storm damage, hail, and flooding can be sent as a reply to this email, via our WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

Wednesday 8/13/25 brought a round of isolated severe thunderstorms and localized flooding to the region. The complete log of reports can be seen here:
https://wx1box.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/reports_8_13_25.pdf

Heat and humidity though a bit cooler than Wednesday is expected today followed by a second cold front with the main threat being thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and localized flooding The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing and strength of the cold front into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of instability despite weak wind shear profiles.
2.) Cloud cover and amount of clearing to determine the level of instability. More clearing with higher instability increases the threat for thunderstorms with localized flooding and the isolated strong to severe thunderstorm risk.
3.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. They will be isolated to scattered with pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.

Special Announcement: 2025 Northeast HamXposition – 1 Degree Outside Presentation by Matt and Danielle Noyes/SKYWARN Training & Other SKYWARN/Weather Related Topics

Hello to all…

The 2025 Northeast HamXposition and ARRL New England Division Convention will be held from Thursday Evening 8/21/25-Sunday 8/24/25. There will be many interesting forums at this year’s convention. For complete information on this Amateur Radio Convention, please see the following link:
https://hamxposition.org/

The Convention is honored and privileged that Matt and Danielle Noyes will return and provide an update on their digital weather venture, 1Degree Outside. They will be presenting about their latest updates and ventures for their new company and have entered into a partnership with the WX1BOX Amateur Radio SKYWARN team on SKYWARN surface reporting during severe weather. They will discuss the new partnership and the vital role Amateur Radio & non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters play with surface reporting during severe weather events and how they incorporate the data into their operations.

We will also have a SKYWARN/ARES/RACES table at the Convention as we have had going back to the late 1990s. In addition, there will be several SKYWARN and weather related topics including SKYWARN Training and Advanced Topics in SKYWARN presentation with new material added for this year which will be taught by KD1CY-Rob Macedo, Eastern Mass ARES SEC & SKYWARN Coordinator.

A list of the key SKYWARN and weather related presentations for Northeast HamXposition are listed below:

Friday 8/22/25:
100 PM: SKYWARN Spotter training by KD1CY-Rob Macedo

Saturday 8/23/25:
200 PM: Advanced Topics in SKYWARN – Doppler Radar Fundamentals & How You Can Help with Severe Weather Reporting Situational Awareness by KD1CY-Rob Macedo
300 PM: 1DegreeOutside: Their Digital-First Weather Approach One Year Later & Vital Partnership with the WX1BOX Amateur Radio SKYWARN Team by Matt and Danielle Noyes
There are many other topics related to ARES and Emergency Communications at the convention. The full schedule of presentations can be seen here:
https://registration.hamxposition.org/Schedule/

The Convention also features a full Amateur Radio Flea Market and Amateur Radio vendors. For those that maybe interested in getting their Amateur Radio license, the convention has a “Tech in a Day” class on Saturday 8/23/25 and several Volunteer Examiner (VE) test sessions as listed on the schedule.

We hope many from the Amateur Radio community and even those outside of the Amateur Radio community can attend and see the SKYWARN/Weather related presentations and for those that might be interested in getting their Amateur Radio license, use the convention as an opportunity to get licensed by preparing ahead of time or take advantage of the Tech-In-A-Day licensing class offered. Thanks to all for their support!

One more day of heat and humidity before a cold front moves into the area Wednesday Afternoon and Evening and stall over Southern New England Friday then shifts south of the area during the day Friday. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cold front into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of strong wind shear profiles.
2.) Frontal forcing, instability and wind shear to offset some unfavorable severe weather parameters.
3.) Mid-level drying during the day Wednesday if that occurs and whether moisture returns in the mid-levels during the time of peak heating.
4.) Cooling temperatures aloft and how this could offset unfavorable severe weather parameters particularly the mid-level drying
5.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. They will be isolated to scattered with pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.
