Storm Coordination Message #3 – Sunday 10/12/25-Monday 10/13/25 Multi-Hazard Coastal Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..A coastal storm will bring portions of Southern New England, Heavy rainfall, strong to damaging wind gusts, coastal flooding and beach erosion late Sunday Afternoon to Monday Evening. Rainfall will be beneficial with 1-2″ of rain expected with higher amounts across much of the region with 2-4″ with isolated higher amounts across parts of Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts.
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect for Block Island, RI, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Massachusetts from 5 PM Sunday Evening to 2 PM Monday Afternoon for sustained winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH and isolated higher gusts possible. A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM Sunday Evening to 8 PM Monday Evening for sustained winds 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH and isolated higher gusts possible. Coastal and interior areas of Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island outside of the Wind Advisory/High Wind Warning area could see wind gusts of 40-45 MPH with isolated higher gusts while inland areas see wind gusts 30-40 MPH with isolated higher gusts in the higher elevations. These winds could cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree, wire damage and power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 2-6 PM Sunday for East Coastal Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands. A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect for South Coastal Rhode Island from 11 AM to 3 PM Sunday. The advisories are for minor to isolated pockets of moderate coastal flooding of shore roads at the time of high tide and may result in a few shore road closures. The Coastal Flood Watch for Southern Bristol and Southern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts is cancelled..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets possible to cover the various hazards from this coastal storm Sunday through Tuesday AM. Pictures and videos of storm damage, rain related flooding and coastal flooding can be sent as a reply to this message via the WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

A coastal storm is on track to impact the region starting Sunday Morning with impacts at the coast from coastal flooding and then with heavy rainfall and strong to damaging winds especially at the coast but also impacting some areas inland from the coast. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors remain:

1.) The strength of the storm system and how the storm system organizes and whether its elongated or if its more of an energy transfer closer to the Southern New England coast from the North Carolina coast. This will determine how strong the wind gusts will be and how the rainfall organizes over the area. While we will certainly will have lower barometric pressure storm systems later this Fall and winter, the pressure gradient between the low pressure and high pressure to the north will be the cause of the strong wind gusts. Recent model trends have moved a bit stronger which may allow for some stronger wind gusts inland, particularly in higher elevations and somewhat stronger wind gusts at the coast.
2.) How the precipitation field organizes and how far north it reaches will determine extent of rainfall amounts in the region. This has also been a bit more robust in recent model trends.
3.) How the strongest winds coincide with the high tide cycles will determine the coastal flood potential and how widespread it will be.

Post Severe Weather Coordination Message #3 – Saturday 9/6/25 Severe Weather Outbreak

Hello to all…

..Significant severe weather outbreak across Western, Central and Northeast Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut Saturday Afternoon and Evening with 5 EF1 Tornadoes confirmed in the communities of Paxton, Holden, Berlin and Stow MA (2 separate touchdowns were determined in Paxton). Full tornado path width and length information has now been provided. Also hard hit with wind damage is the Holyoke/Easthampton/Southampton MA area..
..NWS/MEMA Storm Surveys were conducted in the above communities based on the preliminary damage reports received by Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters including efforts from Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters who helped photograph and video storm damage in Paxton, Holden, Berlin and Stow MA. Many thanks to all involved in this effort as it helps the damage survey process..
..Additional reports, pictures and videos of wind damage, hail, flooding, lightning damage, rain gauge reports 1″ or more and measured wind gusts of 40 MPH or greater will be helpful as NWS completes documentation of this severe weather outbreak. They can be sent as a reply to this message, via our WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..
..A final post severe weather coordination message will be posted by the end of this week as our national Amateur Radio Association publishes a story on this event. A WX1BOX Facebook Photo Album of damage photos has been added to this update along with an updated Amateur Radio Log of reports..
..Below are the NWS Local Storm Report and Public Information Statement updates on the 5 EF1 tornadoes, the prior NWS Boston/Norton Local Storm Reports/Public Information Statements, updated WX1BOX Amateur Radio Report Log and WX1BOX Facebook Photo Album and a short write-up on some facts around having the 5 EF1 Tornadoes on Saturday 9/6/25..

5 EF1 Tornadoes across parts of Central Massachusetts in the communities of Paxton, Holden, Berlin and Stow MA. One of the tornado touchdowns was twice in the area of Paxton and Holden. These multiple tornado touchdowns were from the same parent severe thunderstorm cell where the tornado lifted for a greater than 2 mile range which by NWS definition consitutes a new tornado touchdown. This is explained in the NWS Storm Data Preparation Directive and can be found in this large document by searching “2 mile” in the document.

This is the first time since the June 1st, 2011 Massachusetts Tornado Outbreak that 5 tornadoes were logged on the same day in the commonwealth of Massachusetts since June 1st 2011 and prior to that, the previous time this happened was July 3rd, 1997. The various reports and statements on the Saturday 9/6/25 severe weather outbreak is listed below:

Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Saturday 9/6/25 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..A cold front will approach Southern New England Saturday Afternoon and Evening setting the stage for Scattered to potentially numerous Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats and even isolated tornadoes as a secondary threat..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has continued Northwest, North-Central Connecticut, Western and North-Central Massachusetts in a slight risk for severe weather with a marginal risk of severe weather through Northeast Connecticut, Northwest Rhode Island, south-central and Northeast Massachusetts. Timeframe for severe weather is between 12-10 PM ET Saturday..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely for Saturday Afternoon and Evening. Pictures and videos of storm damage, hail, and flooding can be sent as a reply to this email, via our WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

A cold front will approach Southern New England as warm and humid conditions for September cover the region. Things are continuing to line up for a rather active severe weather day for the region and NWS Norton has issued a Special Weather Statement highlighting the severe weather potential. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cold front and frontal forcing into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of strong wind shear profiles and expected high instability and this is lining up well currently.
2.) Amount of clearing for heating and destabilization to produce the expected high instability. Models have a sufficient window of clearing by late Saturday morning to mid-afternoon and this is key to expected severe weather potential. Low clouds are burning off in the marginal and slight risk areas to allow for heating.
3.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. For today, they will be scattered and possibly numerous but not every area will see one. There will be scattered to numerous pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely for Saturday Afternoon and Evening. Pictures and videos of storm damage, hail, and flooding can be sent as a reply to this email, via our WX1BOX Facebook, X and Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. This will be the last coordination message as we shift into operations mode. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Saturday Afternoon & Evening 9/6/25 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..A cold front will approach Southern New England Saturday Afternoon and Evening setting the stage for Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats and even an isolated tornado as a secondary threat..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed Northwest, North-Central Connecticut, Western and North-Central Massachusetts in a slight risk for severe weather with a marginal risk of severe weather through Northeast Connecticut, Northwest Rhode Island, south-central and Northeast Massachusetts. Timeframe for severe weather is between 1-10 PM ET Saturday..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely for Saturday Afternoon and Evening.

The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cold front and frontal forcing into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of strong wind shear profiles and expected high instability.
2.) Amount of clearing for heating and destabilization to produce the expected high instability. Models have a sufficient window of clearing by late Saturday morning to mid-afternoon and this is key to expected severe weather potential.
3.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. They will be isolated to scattered with pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely for Saturday Afternoon and Evening.
