..A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 PM Sunday Evening to 10 AM Monday Morning for Northern Connecticut, All of Rhode Island Eastern Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Essex, Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 5-10″ of snow likely with isolated higher amounts to around 12″ possible in interior portions of the warning area. The southern and eastern parts of the warning area may see a wet snow that could cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages particularly if higher amounts are realized..

..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Barnstable County Massachusetts from 7 PM Sunday Evening to 10 AM Monday Morning for 3-5″ of snow as sleet and rain mix holds down amounts in this area with wind gusts between 35-40 MPH. If less mixing occurs, it would increase snow amounts with isolated pockets of tree and power line damage and power outages possible. Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island are expected to see 2″ or less of snow at this time..

Another winter storm will affect the region tonight into Monday Morning. The headlines depict the current expectations which have been increased a little since the last message which has necessitated this update. As people have probably seen over the last few storms, models have struggled with the pattern and with marginal temperatures causing mixing with sleet and rain, this has affected snow totals in some areas in past storm events, however, for this storm, the trend in the models between the prior message and this message has been for a stronger storm solution with heavier snow and a storm track favorable for what is outlined about. Key factors for this specific storm remain as follows:

1.) How much rain and sleet mixes in with the snow in the southeast portions of the Winter Storm Warning at the coastline. If that mix occurs, it could hold snow amounts down. If it falls mostly as snow, it could be a heavy wet snow which would increase the potential for isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages.
2.) The storm track, speed and intensification process of the storm will be another factor. If the storm track is a bit more southeast or intensification occurs later in time or further offshore, snow amounts will be on the lower end of the ranges. If the storm track holds to the same current projection or gets a bit closer and the intensification occurs a little more rapidly closer to our region, it would support the higher end of the snow total ranges particularly in the interior portions of the Winter Storm Warning are with the isolated higher amounts being a bit more widespread. As of this update, the track near the 40 North/70 West benchmark and more intensification earlier is leading to higher snowfall rates per hour which means a stronger storm solution that will bear watching for both higher end snow amounts as depicted as well as a potential greater threat for wet snow damage.

..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 1 AM to 7 PM Saturday for Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for heavy wet snow accumulating from 4 to 8″ with isolated higher amounts possible and the heaviest snow between 4 AM and 12 PM Saturday. The heavy wet snow with wind gusts 35-40 MPH may cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 1 AM to 7 PM Saturday for Northern Connecticut, All of Rhode Island, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Eastern Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow with isolated higher amounts and those isolated higher amounts being most likely in Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts and the heaviest snow between 4-10 AM. Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard may also see higher snow amounts if no mix with sleet or rain occurs during the storm event. If snow amounts are greater than 4″, isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages are possible particularly coastal areas where there could also be wind gusts between 35-40 MPH..

An active weekend of winter weather will affect Southern New England tonight into early Saturday Evening and again late Sunday Afternoon into Monday. This message focuses on the first winter storm for tonight into early Saturday Evening. Additional coordination messages focusing on the late Sunday Afternoon into Monday winter storm will occur after the late Friday night into early Saturday Evening storm is completed. The headlines focus of the coordination message focuses on the late Friday Night into early Saturday Evening storm. Key factors for this storm includes:

1.) Model agreement this close to the storm event is lower than normal. There had been a trend towards a closer to the coast solution which has now trended a little further offshore. Any continued changes in this regard could make snowfall amounts greater in Southern New England and further west with more mixing in Southeast Coastal New England or keep the storm more focused on Southeast New England as currently depicted or even slightly further south and east if the storm tracks a bit more to the east or offshore.
2.) The amount of intensification as the storm swings through the region as well as how quickly it will swing through the area. This will affect snowfall rates per hour and may also be a factor in precipitation type along the south coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island region. The speed of the system will also affect the duration of the heavier snowfall.
3.) Snow accumulations over 4 inches and especially over 6 inches with wind gusts in the 30-40 MPH range and those strongest wind gusts in East and South Coastal Massachusetts would have the potential to cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages. This could be a greater threat if the heavier snow amounts occur and over a more widespread area.

..A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 PM Sunday Evening through 7 PM Monday Evening for Northern Connecticut, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden and Worcester Counties of Massachusetts and from 3 AM to 7 PM Monday for the rest of the NWS Norton coverage area for sustained winds of 20-40 MPH with gusts to 60-65 MPH and a few isolated higher wind gusts between 65-70 MPH and possibly higher also likely. These winds will be sufficient to cause scattered to potentially numerous pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered to numerous power outages..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Boston/Norton will commence by 8 AM Monday Morning for the wind damage potential with self-activation monitoring conditions overnight through 8 AM Monday Morning..

The headlines depict the current potential with the storm system for the damaging wind potential for the region late Sunday Night into Monday Evening where High Wind Warnings remain in effect for the entire coverage area and the potential for wind gusts between 60-65 MPH and a few isolated wind gusts between 65-70 MPH with possibly higher wind gusts. The strongest winds will be during the day on Monday into Monday Afternoon. Very strong wind fields aloft, good mixing capability to bring the winds down to the surface and a very significant pressure difference between the storm to our northwest that is deepening and the high pressure system will allow for these damaging winds in the region. A couple of other factors that will be worth monitoring include that several of the higher elevation locations in the east slopes of the Berkshires had 1/8-1/4″ icing on trees and power lines and the strong winds in these areas may have a greater impact giving that icing. Also, areas that lost their snow pack with Sunday’s rainfall will create saturated ground that might also allow for enhanced wind damage potential due to the saturated ground conditions.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Boston/Norton will commence by 8 AM Monday Morning for the wind damage potential with self-activation monitoring conditions overnight through 8 AM Monday Morning.
