Storm Coordination Message #1 – Thursday Morning 1/3/19 Light Snow/Freezing Drizzle Potential

..New Year’s Eve Night into New Year’s Day Morning will bring a period of icing to northern and western Massachusetts changing to rain and rain heavy at times in the region with wind gusts around 40 MPH in South and East Coastal Massachusetts. On New Year’s Day, temperatures will be very mild but there will be the potential for strong to damaging winds and isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 1 AM Tuesday Morning for Western Franklin, Western Hampshire. Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for snow and sleet accumulations from a coating to one-half inch and a trace to one-tenth inch of icing causing slippery travel conditions..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 8 AM through 3 PM Tuesday for Worcester, Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH likely. A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 8 AM-5 PM Tuesday for the rest of the NWS Boston/Norton Coverage Area for sustained winds of 15-30 MPH with gusts to 50-55 MPH. These winds have the potential to cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..

It is noted that the potential for isolated to scattered pockets of wind damage is fairly high and this should be treated as a high-end Self-Activation where we’ll be monitoring closely for reports particularly in the High Wind Warning area but all parts of the NWS Boston/Norton coverage area will have the potential for strong to damaging winds..

New Year’s Eve Night into New Year’s Day morning will be featuring rain, heavy at times over most of the area with the potential for some wet snow/ice accumulation in northern and western Massachusetts. It appears the wintry mix aspect of the storm should be fairly short lived and snow and ice amounts have been lowered slightly and may also be confined to higher elevation locations of the Winter Weather Advisory area. With the heavy rain, some wind gusts to around 40 MPH will be possible in East and South Coastal Massachusetts. As the rain ends, New Year’s Day looks quite mild with temperatures in the 50s to around 60 degrees but very strong to potentially damaging winds also possible to likely as the storm system departs the region. The headlines cover the current information on the winds with a High Wind Warning for Central and Northeast Massachusetts and Wind Advisories for the rest of the coverage area. The strongest winds will likely be from around 10 AM-3 PM Tuesday across the region.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor conditions Monday Night into New Year’s Day. It is noted that the wind damage potential is fairly high and this should be treated as a high-end Self-Activation where we’ll be monitoring closely for reports particularly in the High Wind Warning area but all parts of the NWS Boston/Norton coverage area will have the potential for strong to damaging winds.
