Storm Coordination Message #2 – Thursday Afternoon 11/15/18-Friday Morning 11/16/18 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..First widespread accumulating snow and ice is on track for much of interior Southern New England late Thursday Afternoon through Friday Morning with strong to damaging winds on the Cape and Islands..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 PM Thursday Evening to 7 AM Friday Morning for Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester, North-Central Middlesex and Western Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-4″ of snow with isolated amounts to 6″ and a coating to two-tenths of an inch of ice. The weight of snow and ice may cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Franklin and Western Hampshire Counties of Massachusetts from 7 PM Thursday Evening to 9 AM Friday Morning for 3-6″ of snow with isolated higher amounts to 8″ and up to one-tenth of an inch of ice. The weight of snow and ice may cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages.
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Northern Connecticut from 4 PM Thursday Afternoon to 7 AM Friday Morning for 1-3″ of snow and up to two-tenths of an inch of ice. If Ice accumulations exceed one-quarter inch, isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages would be possible..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 PM Thursday Evening to 1 AM Friday Morning for Rhode Island and Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for a coating to 3″ of snow and ice accumulations of a coating with wind gusts in the 35-40 MPH range..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 PM Thursday Evening to 7 AM Friday Morning for Eastern Essex, Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk and Norfolk Counties of Massachusetts for 1-4″ of snow and a coating of ice with wind gusts up to 40 MPH possible.
..A Wind Advisory is in effect from 12 AM to 12 PM Friday for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. These winds will cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages. This area may see precipitation start as snow before changing to rain with one inch or less of snow accumulation..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm with potential Amateur Radio call-up nets on various SKYWARN frequencies for snow and ice totals and changeover in precipitation types and any tree and wire damage from snow and ice during Thursday Night and again for final totals and reports Friday Morning..

The first widespread accumulating snow and ice particularly for interior Southern New England and possibly some coastal areas is still expected late Thursday Afternoon into Friday Morning. The headlines depict the latest thinking. Key items to be resolved remains that there is a warm layer of air between the cold surface and colder temperatures aloft. Various factors in how thick this temperature layer is, how cold temperatures are and how heavy the precipitation is will determine how much snow versus ice falls and where the rain-snow line sets up before the rain-snow line eventually moves through Southern New England changing precipitation to ice and rain. The headline changes reflect the latest thinking

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm with potential Amateur Radio call-up nets on various SKYWARN frequencies for snow and ice totals and changeover in precipitation types and any tree and wire damage from snow and ice during Thursday Night and again for final totals and reports Friday Morning. This will be the last coordination message as we move into operations mode. ..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system for Tuesday Morning into Tuesday Night possibly extending into Wednesday..

Another coastal storm system will affect the region with heavy rainfall and strong to damaging winds. The headlines depict the latest thinking and include the addition of a Flood Watch for the Fall River, New Bedford, Wareham area of South Coastal Massachusetts and Central and Southern Rhode Island. The strong to damaging wind potential still looks most likely across Cape Cod and the Islands with wind gusts possibly reaching 40 MPH elsewhere in Southeast New England. There will also be another pulse of strong to possibly damaging winds later Tuesday Evening through Wednesday Morning over parts of Southern New England. Wind Advisories may be posted for other parts of Southern New England for later Tuesday into Wednesday in addition to the first round of winds during the day Tuesday.

..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system for Tuesday Morning into Tuesday Night possibly extending into Wednesday Morning..

Another coastal storm system will affect the region with heavy rainfall and strong to damaging winds. The headlines depict the latest thinking. The strong to damaging wind potential looks most likely across Cape Cod and the Islands. Some of the models are a bit further west with the storm track which may allow for stronger winds to spread a bit further inland during the day Tuesday and this will bear watching. There will also be another pulse of strong to possibly damaging winds later Tuesday Evening through Wednesday Morning over parts of Southern New England. Wind Advisories may be posted for other parts of Southern New England for later Tuesday into Wednesday Morning in addition to the first round of winds during the day Tuesday.

Storm/Severe Weather Coordination Message #3 – – Friday Evening 11/9/18-Saturday Afternoon 11/10/18 Heavy Rainfall/Strong Wind/Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Heavy Rainfall and the potential for strong to damaging winds including isolated strong to severe thunderstorms that can bring stronger winds down to the surface expected Friday Night into Saturday Morning with strong winds possible across the coverage area during Saturday Afternoon and Evening..
..A Flood Watch remains in effect from Friday Afternoon into Saturday Afternoon for the entire NWS Boston/Norton coverage area except for Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island. The Flood Watch has been expanded into Barnstable County Massachusetts. The Watch is in effect for widespread 1-2″ of rainfall with isolated higher amounts to 2.5″ possible. Given the wet weather pattern and additional rainfall, this will potentially lead to urban and poor drainage flooding as well as the potential for small river and stream flooding..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 10 PM Friday Night through 7 PM Saturday Evening for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with wind gusts to 50 MPH. A Wind Advisory is now in effect for Rhode Island and Central and Eastern Massachusetts from 10 AM to 7 PM Saturday. These winds will cause isolated pockets of tree and power line damage and isolated power outages..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the strong to damaging wind and flood potential for late Friday Afternoon through early Saturday Evening..

The major update for this message is that the Flood Watch has been expanded into Barnstable County Massachusetts and the Wind Advisory has been extended through 7 PM Saturday for Cape Cod and the Islands and expanded in area from 10 AM-7 PM Saturday for Central and Eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island as confidence as grown on another round of strong winds behind the storm system on Saturday. This will likely be the last coordination message on this storm system unless there is a significant upgrade to the situation and time allows for an update. The remainder is unchanged.

Another dynamic storm system will swing through Southern New England Friday Night into Saturday. It will bring heavy rain across the NWS Boston/Norton coverage area late Friday Afternoon into early Saturday Morning as well as the potential for strong to damaging winds in two phases. The first phase of winds with the heavy rainfall and any thunderstorm activity Friday Evening into early Saturday Morning with the strongest winds centered across Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The second phase of the strong winds will affect the region Saturday Afternoon into the early evening as the storm swings through the region and those winds could affect much of the NWS Boston/Norton coverage area. These winds are not expected to be quite as strong as last Saturday but will have the potential for isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages. Heavy rainfall may produce flooding given the wet pattern of the last 6 weeks and there could be localized higher amounts that enhance flooding in some areas. Urban and poor drainage flooding may also be a greater issue due to leave clogged storm drains.

Any thunderstorms with the heavy rainfall may have the potential to enhance the strong to damaging winds reaching the surface Friday Night. This potential will be monitored closely.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the strong to damaging wind and flood potential for late Friday Afternoon through Saturday Afternoon. Another coordination message will be posted by Saturday Morning as needed for the second round of strong winds on Saturday Afternoon and Evening.
