Storm Coordination Message #3 – Wednesday 3/7/18-Thursday 3/8/18 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Post Storm Coordination Message on the Major Coastal Storm delayed to get coordination message for the mid-week storm out first. Still pushing towards a post storm message this evening. Any damage photos can be posted as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook or Twitter feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org..
..Major Coastal Storm to Affect Southern New England Midday Wednesday into Thursday Morning. This storm will bring a widespread heavy snow to areas north and west of I-95 though some parts of Southeast Massachusetts may get accumulating snow as well as strong winds and minor coastal flooding though the winds and coastal flooding will not be as significant as the prior storm. Snow near any rain/snow line will be heavy and wet and could lead to isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated to scattered power outages..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 7 AM Wednesday to 1 PM Thursday for Franklin, Hampshire, Western Hampden, Worcester, Northern and Central Middlesex, and Western Essex Counties of Massachusetts from 7 AM Wednesday to 1 PM Thursday for 12-18″ of snow with localized amounts of 20″ possible. The snow will be heavy and wet in some areas especially closest to the rain-snow line and could lead to isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated to scattered power outages..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 7 AM Wednesday to 9 AM Thursday for Northern Connecticut, Eastern Hampshire, Eastern Hampden, and Northwest Providence County Rhode Island for 8-12″ of snow in valley location with localized amounts to 12-18″ possible in the hill towns. The snow will be heavy and wet in some areas especially closest to the rain-snow line and could lead to isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated to scattered power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 7 AM to 9 PM Wednesday for Kent, Southeast Providence and Washington Counties Rhode Island and Southeast Middlesex, Western Norfolk, and Eastern Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow and most of that snow falling during the evening commute before the snow mixes with and changes to rain. Areas south and east of this advisory area will likely see a period of snow before changing to rain and the rain becoming heavy at times. The southern edges of the Winter Storm Watches have been cancelled..
..A Flood Watch is now in effect from Wednesday Morning through Thursday Afternoon for all of Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts from Suffolk and Norfolk Counties southeastward except for Cape Cod and the Islands. Rainfall of 1-2″ with isolated higher amounts in a 6 hour period may cause urban and poor drainage flooding as well as renewed river and stream flooding given prior flooding from the previous storm..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 10 AM to 9 PM Wednesday for Block Island Rhode Island. A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 1 PM Wednesday to 1 AM Thursday for Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands. A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 4 PM Wednesday to 3 AM Thursday for Eastern Essex County Massachusetts. These High Wind Warnings are for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH and the potential for isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated to scattered power outages..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 10 AM to 9 PM Wednesday for Newport and Washington Counties RI. A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 1 PM Wednesday to 1 AM Thursday for Western Essex, Norfolk, Southeast Middlesex, Bristol and Western Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts. These Wind Advisories are for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH with isolated higher gusts possible and the potential for isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated to scattered power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect from 2 AM to 6 AM Thursday for Eastern Essex County Massachusetts for minor to moderate coastal flooding at the time of high tide potentially exacerbated by prior storm coastal flood damage. A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 2 AM to 6 AM for Eastern Plymouth County, Cape Cod and Nantucket Island for minor coastal flooding at the time of high tide and any residual water from the prior storm and any weakened infrastructure could result in slightly greater impacts..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon lasting through at least 1230 AM Thursday Morning. The overnight high tide cycle will likely be monitored via SKYWARN Self-Activation..

Another major coastal storm is taking aim at Southern New England for Wednesday into Thursday. The headlines have the latest info. A few key items/factors for this coastal storm:

1.) This storm will not have winds as high or coastal flooding as severe as the prior coastal storm but there will be some strong to damaging winds at the coast line and minor coastal flooding that with weakened infrastructure may have more impact than normal given the prior storm. Wind and Coastal flood headlines are now posted for portions of Eastern New England.
2.) This storm will have very heavy snow accumulations for interior locations and it could be a heavy wet snow in at least a portion of the Winter Storm Warning area and possibly in the Winter Weather Advisory area, this could lead to pockets of tree and power line damage and power outages.
3.) The most problematic part of this winter storm forecast is the rain-snow line position and where the potential heavy wet snow lines up in the region and how widespread it is. Model solutions have been a bit warmer leading to adjustments in the Winter Storm Warning area, Winter Weather Advisories being issued in the southern portion of the Winter Storm Watch/Warning areas and a Flood Watch being posted in Southeast New England. This will bear close monitoring throughout the storm event.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon lasting through at least 1230 AM Thursday Morning. The overnight high tide cycle will likely be monitored via SKYWARN Self-Activation. This could be the last coordination message for this storm system unless a significant change to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Storm Coordination Message #3 – Thursday Night 3/1/18 Through Saturday Afternoon 3/3/18 Storm Event

Hello to all…

..Powerful and long duration coastal storm will bring the multiple high tide cycles of significant major coastal flooding to East Coastal Massachusetts along with the potential for strong to damaging winds including hurricane force wind gusts for Cape Cod and the Islands, heavy rainfall that could lead to urban, poor drainage and potentially river and stream flooding and rain changing to snow with the potential for significant snow accumulations in portions of interior Southern New England. The potential for heavy snow remains the lowest confidence portion of the forecast..
..A Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands from 9 AM Friday Morning to 3 AM Sunday Morning for the potential of major coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island from 7 AM Friday to 11 PM Saturday for minor coastal flooding of shore roads up to 1 foot in depth for multiple high tide cycles..
..A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 AM Friday to 10 AM Saturday for Eastern Kent, Southeast Providence, Bristol, Newport and Washington Counties of Rhode Island including Block Island and Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 20-40 MPH with gusts to 70 MPH and isolated higher wind gusts likely. These winds will cause scattered to numerous pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages..
..A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 AM Friday to 10 AM Saturday for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to 75 MPH and isolated higher gusts likely. These winds will cause scattered to numerous pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered to numerous power outages..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 10 AM Friday through 7 AM Saturday for Western Kent and Northwest Providence Counties of Rhode Island and Southern Worcester, Central and Southeast Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 65 MPH and isolated higher wind gusts possible. These winds will have the potential to cause scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 7 AM Friday to 7 AM Saturday for Northern Connecticut, Eastern Franklin, Eastern Hampshire, Eastern Hampden, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 45-50 MPH. These winds coupled with any wet snow accumulation will cause scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages..
..A Flood Watch remains in effect for Northern Connecticut, all of Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts from Southern Worcester and Central Middlesex Counties eastward to the coast line from Friday Morning through Saturday Morning for 1-3 inches of rainfall with isolated higher rainfall amounts of 4″. This rainfall could produce urban and small stream flooding as well as urban and poor drainage flooding..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 4 AM Friday to 4 AM Saturday for Western Franklin, Western Hampshire and Western Hampden Counties of Massachusetts for 5-8″of snow with higher amounts to 12″ possible. The snow will be heavy and wet and coupled with the strong winds could down scattered trees and power lines and cause scattered power outages. This remains lower confidence and could be subject to revision on snow amounts..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from Noon Friday to 4 AM Saturday for Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 4-7″ of snow with higher amounts to 10″ possible. The snow will be heavy and wet and coupled with the strong winds could down scattered trees and power lines and cause scattered power outages. This remains lower confidence and could be subject to revision on snow amounts..
..A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Southern Worcester County from Friday Afternoon through Saturday Morning for 4-7″ of snow. The snow will be heavy and wet and coupled with the strong winds could down scattered trees and power lines and cause scattered power outages. This remains lower confidence and could be subject to revision on snow amounts..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 8 AM Friday Morning lasting through Saturday Afternoon. Overnight Ops are possible..
..Pictures and videos of storm damage can be sent via the WX1BOX Facebook/Twitter feeds, as a reply to this email or to the email address pics@nsradio.org. Credit will be given to the SKYWARN Spotter/Amateur Radio Operator for the photos/videos unless otherwise indicated..
..ARES/RACES Groups should seek advice from local leadership for possible standby or activation status..

Model solutions have converged on a storm track just offshore of the Southern New England coastline but close enough to get the region into significant impacts from coastal flooding which could hit major category in multiple locations, damaging wind gusts causing isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding and small river and stream flooding. The track guidance continues to support an increased risk for heavy wet snow and coupled with strong winds could cause power outages in interior locations of the Winter Storm Warning/Watch areas. The headlines reflect the current thinking. Factors for consideration:

1.) Given model trends and the potential for widespread damaging winds and widespread pockets of tree and wire damage, high wind warnings have been posted and expanded with the continued potential for hurricane force wind gusts over Cape Cod and the Islands and possibly other parts of the coast line with wind gusts as high as 75 MPH with isolated higher gusts likely particularly in Southeast Coastal New England and Cape Cod and the Islands. Further inland in Eastern Massachusetts, Northwest Rhode, wind gusts to 65-70 MPH are likely with widespread pockets of wind damage. Lesser wind gusts are expected inland but with the wet snow, impact could be similar in nature.
2.) This is likely to be one of the bigger coastal flood episodes for East Coastal Massachusetts in recent memory particularly when considering the multiple tide cycles and higher astronomical tides. This continues to bear close watching and preparations in this area should start and be completed by Thursday Night into early Friday Morning. It is now looking like the Friday Morning, Friday Evening and Saturday Midday high tides all have high risks with some risk of some level of coastal flooding Saturday Evening.
3.) Heavy rainfall could lead to urban and poor drainage flooding as well as street flooding. If the heavier rainfall occurs over East Coastal Massachusetts, this could cause further flooding issues in the coastal areas.
4.) Lowest confidence in this forecast is regarding any rain changing to snow potential but enough confidence for Winter Storm Warnings across Western and Northern Massachusetts with a Winter Storm Watch for Southern Worcester County. The trend in the models has maintained colder temperatures and more snow in the interior and there is a possibility more snowfall totals could get into portions of Eastern Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut as well. This will likely have the most revisions leading up to the storm and will bear close watching for further changes. With the wet snow and strong to damaging winds, pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages are likely.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence Friday Morning lasting through Saturday Afternoon. Overnight Ops are possible. Pictures and videos of storm damage can be sent via the WX1BOX Facebook/Twitter feeds, as a reply to this email or to the email address pics@nsradio.org. Credit will be given to the SKYWARN Spotter/Amateur Radio Operator for the photos/videos unless otherwise indicated. ARES/RACES Groups should seek advice from local leadership for possible standby or activation status.

Another coordination message will be posted if time allows by 9 AM Friday Morning otherwise this will be the last coordination message on the storm potential. Storm Coordination Message #2 – Thursday Night 3/1/18 Through Saturday Afternoon 3/3/18 Storm Event

Hello to all…

..Powerful and long duration coastal storm will bring the potential for multiple high tide cycles of potentially significant coastal flooding to East Coastal Massachusetts along with the potential for strong to damaging winds including hurricane force wind gusts for Cape Cod and the Islands, heavy rainfall that could lead to urban, poor drainage and potentially river and stream flooding and rain changing to snow with the potential now for significant snow accumulations in portions of interior Southern New England. The potential for heavy snow is a change since the last update and the lowest confidence portion of the forecast..
..A Coastal Flood Watch remains in effect for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands from Friday Morning to Saturday Afternoon for the potential of moderate to major coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 10 AM Friday to 10 AM Saturday for Eastern Kent, Southeast Providence, Bristol, Newport and Washington Counties of Rhode Island including Block Island and Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 20-40 MPH with gusts to 65 MPH. These winds will cause scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 10 AM Friday to 10 AM Saturday for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to 75 MPH and isolated higher gusts possible. These winds will cause scattered to numerous pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered to numerous power outages..
..A High Wind Watch remains in effect from Friday Morning through Saturday Afternoon for Western Kent and Northwest Providence Counties of Rhode Island and Worcester, Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 65 MPH. These winds will have the potential to cause scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages..
..A Flood Watch remains in effect for Northern Connecticut, all of Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts from Southern Worcester and Central Middlesex Counties eastward to the coast line from Friday Morning through Saturday Morning for 1-3 inches of rainfall with isolated higher rainfall amounts of 4″. This rainfall could produce urban and small stream flooding as well as urban and poor drainage flooding. Western portions of the region were dropped from the Flood Watch as more heavy wet snow is expected in these areas..
..A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Late Tonight through Late Friday Night for Western Franklin, Western Hampshire and Western Hampden Counties of Massachusetts for 4-7″ of snow. A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Friday Afternoon through Saturday Morning for Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-6″ of snow with isolated higher amounts. The heavy wet snow combined with strong winds could cause pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages. These snow totals could be subject to significant revisions and is the lowest confidence portion of the forecast..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence Friday Morning lasting through Saturday Afternoon. Overnight Ops are possible..

Model solutions are converging on a storm track just offshore of the Southern New England coastline but close enough to get the region into significant impacts from coastal flooding which could hit major category in multiple locations, damaging wind gusts causing isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and scattered power outages and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding and small river and stream flooding. The track is slightly further offshore and this has increased the risk for heavy wet snow and coupled with strong winds could cause power outages in interior locations of the newly issued Winter Storm Watch area. The headlines reflect the current thinking. Factors for consideration:

1.) Given model trends and the potential for very strong to damaging winds, high wind warnings have been posted and the potential for hurricane force wind gusts over Cape Cod and the Islands and possibly other parts of the coast line with wind gusts as high as 65 MPH further inland.
2.) This is likely to be one of the bigger coastal flood episodes for East Coastal Massachusetts particularly when considering the multiple tide cycles and higher astronomical tides. This will bear close watching and preparations in this area should start and be completed by Thursday Night into early Friday Morning. The worst tides are likely to be late Friday Night and midday Saturday though minor coastal flooding will occur in the late Friday Morning tide cycle based on current models.
3.) Heavy rainfall could lead to urban and poor drainage flooding as well as street flooding. If the heavier rainfall occurs over East Coastal Massachusetts, this could cause further flooding issues in the coastal areas.
4.) Lowest confidence in this forecast is regarding any rain changing to snow potential. Winter Storm Watches have been posted in areas that could see around or over 6″ of snow and with it being a heavy wet snow, this is likely to produce pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages causing damage. The trend in the models has been for colder temperatures and more snow in the interior and could possibly get into portions of Eastern Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut as well. This will likely have the most revisions leading up to the storm and will bear close watching for further changes.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence Friday Morning lasting through Saturday Afternoon. Overnight Ops are possible. Another coordination message will be posted by 11 PM Thursday Evening. Storm Coordination Message #1 – Thursday Night 3/1/18 Through Saturday Afternoon 3/3/18 Storm Event

Hello to all…

..Powerful and long duration coastal storm will bring the potential for multiple and potentially significant coastal flooding to East Coastal Massachusetts along with the potential for strong to damaging winds, heavy rainfall that could lead to urban, poor drainage and potentially river and stream flooding and rain changing to snow in some areas over the course of the storm event Thursday Night through Saturday..
..A Coastal Flood Watch is now in effect for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands from Friday Morning to Saturday Afternoon for the potential of moderate to major coastal flooding over multiple high tide cycles..
..A High Wind Watch is now in effect from Friday Morning through Saturday Afternoon for all of Central and Eastern Massachusetts from Worcester County eastward through the Cape and Islands and all of Rhode Island for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH and isolated to scattered higher wind gusts likely. These winds will cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated to scattered power outages..
..A Flood Watch is now in effect for the entire coverage of NWS Taunton from Friday Morning through Saturday Morning for 1-3 inches of rainfall with isolated higher rainfall amounts of 4″. This rainfall could produce urban and small stream flooding as well as urban and poor drainage flooding..
..Rain could change to snow in western parts of the coverage area leading to a small snow accumulation. This aspect is lowest confidence and could change as we get closer to the event..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton likely for much of Friday and again on Saturday with timeframes to be determined as we get closer to the event..

The headlines reflect the current thinking. Factors for consideration:

1.) Winds could be stronger than currently listed in the High Wind Watch area and the exact areas for the strongest wind gusts will be better defined in future updates.
2.) This is likely to be one of the bigger coastal flood episodes for East Coastal Massachusetts particularly when considering the multiple tide cycles and higher astronomical tides. This will bear close watching and preparations in this area should start and be completed by Thursday Night.
This should become better defined in future updates.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton likely for much of Friday and again on Saturday with timeframes to be determined as we get closer to the event. Storm Coordination Message #4 – Saturday Night 2/17/18-Sunday Morning 2/18/18 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Quick Hitting Winter Storm likely to bring a plowable snowfall to much of Southern New England. Precipitation type issue concerns could keep snow amounts a bit lower for South Coastal Massachusetts and South Coastal Rhode Island though amounts since last update are unchanged. Cape Cod expected to see mostly advisory level snow but could see high-end advisory to low-end warning criteria amounts around the Cape Cod Canal area. Areas around or just north of the Mass Pike could potentially see slightly higher snowfall amounts as well..
..A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 7 AM Sunday Morning for Northern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Eastern Hampden, Southern Worcester, Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow with a period of 1-2″ per hour snowfall during the overnight period. There is some question of snow mixing with rain along the immediate south coast of Massachusetts/Rhode Island which could hold snow amounts lower. This will bear watching. Near this transition zone, the snow will heavy and wet and could result in isolated tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 7 AM Sunday Morning for Franklin, Hampshire, Western Hampden, Northern Worcester, Middlesex and Suffolk Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow with isolated higher amounts and the highest amounts closer to the Mass Pike..
..A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 7 AM Sunday Morning for Marthas Vineyard for 2-5″ of snow..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Barnstable County through 7 AM Sunday Morning for 2-4″ of snow with isolated amounts to 6″ on the western end of Cape Cod. Nantucket will receive 1-3″ of snow with rain holding down amounts in that area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports and wet snow damage reports including final snowfall amount monitoring over the course of early Sunday Morning. This will be the last coordination message for this event unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs. Below is the NWS Taunton Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook, Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook, Snowfall Maps and Facebook Storm Briefing Post..
