Storm Coordination Message #1 – Snow Squall Potential Tuesday 1/12/16 and Strong Wind Potential Late Tuesday Night 1/12/16 into Wednesday 1/13/16

Hello to all…

..A period of snow and snow squalls will affect interior Southern New England including Western, Central and interior Northeast Massachusetts, Northern Connecticut and Northwest Rhode Island during the evening hours including the evening commute. Accumulations of 1-2″ are likely in most locations but a few localized areas could see 2-4″ of snow where heavier snow squalls occur. Across the coastal plain and Southeast New England, mostly rain or a rain/snow mix will occur. Precipitation will end by around midnight..
..Strong Winds potentially near wind advisory levels are possible late tonight through early Wednesday Afternoon as a coastal system takes shape in the Gulf of Maine. The storm formation location will spare Southern New England a major snowfall but could bring strong winds to the region..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor this situation. Another coordination message will be issued by 1100 PM this evening regarding the strong wind potential for later tonight into early Wednesday Afternoon. Below is the NWS Taunton Special Weather Statement on the Snow Squall Potential, Hazardous Weather Outlook and Snowfall Maps..

Storm Coordination Message #3 – Sunday 1/10/16 Storm Potential

Hello to all..

..Strong Storm System on track for the region bringing mild/record high temperatures, widespread heavy rainfall of 1-2.5″ with isolated higher amounts in a roughly 6 hour period which could lead to urban and poor drainage flooding and the threat of strong to damaging winds..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 11 AM Sunday Morning to 7 PM Sunday Evening for Eastern Essex, Barnstable and Nantucket Counties for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH. A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 9 AM Sunday Morning to 7 PM Sunday Evening for the remainder of Eastern Massachusetts including Martha’s Vineyard, Southeast Providence, Kent, Bristol, Washington, Newport Counties of Rhode Island and Block Island Rhode Island for sustained winds of 15-25 MPH with gusts to 45-55 MPH. These winds could cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..After coordination with NWS Taunton, SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor this storm system this morning through this evening..

A strong but warm storm system will affect Southern New England on Sunday. A widespread heavy rainfall of 1-2.5″ with isolated higher amounts in a 6 hour period could cause pockets of urban and poor drainage flooding. The headlines of the coordination message reflect the latest thinking on the potential strong to damaging wind threat. The key item regarding the strength of the winds will be how warm temperatures get and the ability of the very strong winds aloft to get to the surface. Any convective showers or thunderstorms or a fine line of convection that develops will also help to bring strong winds down to the surface. Currently, the strongest winds are expected across Eastern Massachusetts and Central and Southern Rhode Island but some wind gusts to 40 MPH could occur in interior locations especially the higher terrain. Also, after the rain area moves through and we move into the late afternoon/early evening, there is an outside chance of strong thunderstorms across Western/Central Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut that could have strong winds and possibly even hail but this will be contingent on how much mid-level drying occurs and if there is significant mid-level drying, that would mitigate any strong thunderstorm development.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system this morning through this evening. This will be the last coordination message on the Sunday storm system. Below is the NWS Taunton High Wind Warning/Wind Advisory Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook and Facebook Infographics:

Ocean Effect Snow Coordination Message #2 – Monday Evening 1/4/16-Tuesday AM 1/5/16

Hello to all..

..Ocean Effect Snow caused very slippery travel in portions of the South Shore of Massachusetts (Eastern Plymouth County Mass) with many accidents reported in the Duxbury to Plymouth, Mass area. Additional light snow accumulations are possible in this area through Cape Cod and Nantucket..
..A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through 7 AM Tuesday for Cape Cod and Nantucket for 2-4″ of snow. East Coastal Plymouth County Massachusetts could see a coating to 2 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts. Other areas of East and South Coastal Massachusetts could see a Dusting to 1 inch of snow..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor light ocean effect snow accumulations into Tuesday Morning. All snow amounts including totals under 2″ would be helpful to discern accumulations in the narrow bands of ocean effect snow which could allow for a wider variance of snow amounts depending on where the narrow heavier bands setup. This will be the last coordination message on this event. Below is the NWS Taunton Winter Weather Advisory Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook and Snowfall Map..
