Storm Coordination Message #3 – Saturday Evening 2/15/25-Sunday Evening 2/16/25 Winter Storm Potential & Late Sunday Nite 2/16/25-Monday 2/17/25 Damaging Wind Potential
Hello to all…
..Another weekend storm system will bring snow to a wintry mix in interior locations of Western New England with snow to a wintry mix to rain in Eastern New England this weekend from Saturday Afternoon to Sunday Evening. Plowable snowfall is likely along with the potential of an extended period of sleet and/or freezing rain that will be monitored for impacts. As the weekend storm departs, strong to damaging wind gusts are possible later Sunday Evening into Monday..
..A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 1 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 PM Sunday Evening for Northwest Providence County Rhode Island, Hartford, Tolland, Windham Counties of Connecticut, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, North-Central Middlesex and Western Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow with isolated higher amounts and a glaze to a few tenths inch of ice. Lower elevation areas could see a change to rain by early Sunday PM but higher elevations could see an extended period of sleet/freezing rain..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 1 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 PM Sunday Evening for the remainder of Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts except for Cape Cod and the Islands for 2-5″ of snow with isolated higher amounts and a light glaze to 0.1″ of ice causing slippery travel. The wintry mix in this area is likely to change to rain later Sunday Morning into early Sunday Afternoon. The Cape and Islands outside the Winter Weather Advisory will see a Coating to 3″ of snow before a wintry mix changing to rain overnight Saturday..
..A High Wind Watch is now in effect from Sunday Evening to late Monday Night for all of Southern New England for westerly sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH. These winds and any snow and ice loaded trees and wires could cause scattered to possibly numerous pockets of tree/wire damage and power outages..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Saturday Afternoon and Sunday Evening for this winter storm event. Pictures of snow/ice and storm damage can be posted via our WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds, to the email address pics@nsradio.org or as a reply to this message. An Amateur Radio Net Schedule appears before the Watch/Advisory info.
The headlines depict the current thinking on the weekend storm that as it departs could give strong to damaging wind gusts later Sunday Night into Monday Key factors include:
1.) Storm track and secondary low pressure development will determine snowfall, icing amounts and any changeover to rain in some or all of the current Winter Weather Advisory area and areas outside of but closest to the advisory area. This bears close watching as icing could bring the greatest amount of issues to the region both in terms of travel and tree and power line damage.
2.) Snow and ice load and if strong to damaging wind gusts as the storm departs and deepens Sunday Night into Monday could lead to a isolated to scattered pockets of tree and power line damage/power outages.
SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Saturday Afternoon and Sunday Evening for this winter storm event. Pictures of snow/ice and storm damage can be posted via our WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds, to the email address pics@nsradio.org or as a reply to this message. A shortened coordination message on Amateur Radio Net Schedule could be posted later today if time allows. The next complete coordination message will be posted either by 11 PM Saturday Evening or 1 PM Sunday Afternoon depending on storm operations and forecast changes particularly around the potential for strong to damaging winds on Monday.
