Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday 9/25/25 Heavy Rainfall & Isolated Severe Weather Potential

..Beneficial Rainfall though some heavier downpours could bring minor flooding are expected over the region through Thursday Evening. A secondary threat for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy downpours are possible in the Thursday mid-morning to mid-afternoon hours..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are possible for any severe weather potential for Thursday and will also monitor for rain gauge reports as some areas received 1-2″ of rainfall with isolated higher amounts of greater than 2″ late Tuesday Night through Wednesday Evening. Another coordination message will be posted by 11 AM Thursday Morning unless any ongoing SKYWARN Operations preclude a message..

Post Severe Weather Coordination Message #3 – Saturday 9/6/25 Severe Weather Outbreak

..Significant severe weather outbreak across Western, Central and Northeast Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut Saturday Afternoon and Evening with 5 EF1 Tornadoes confirmed in the communities of Paxton, Holden, Berlin and Stow MA (2 separate touchdowns were determined in Paxton). Full tornado path width and length information has now been provided. Also hard hit with wind damage is the Holyoke/Easthampton/Southampton MA area..
..NWS/MEMA Storm Surveys were conducted in the above communities based on the preliminary damage reports received by Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters including efforts from Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters who helped photograph and video storm damage in Paxton, Holden, Berlin and Stow MA. Many thanks to all involved in this effort as it helps the damage survey process..
..Additional reports, pictures and videos of wind damage, hail, flooding, lightning damage, rain gauge reports 1″ or more and measured wind gusts of 40 MPH or greater will be helpful as NWS completes documentation of this severe weather outbreak. ..Below are the NWS Local Storm Report and Public Information Statement updates on the 5 EF1 tornadoes, the prior NWS Boston/Norton Local Storm Reports/Public Information Statements, updated WX1BOX Amateur Radio Report Log and WX1BOX Facebook Photo Album and a short write-up on some facts around having the 5 EF1 Tornadoes on Saturday 9/6/25..

5 EF1 Tornadoes across parts of Central Massachusetts in the communities of Paxton, Holden, Berlin and Stow MA. One of the tornado touchdowns was twice in the area of Paxton and Holden. These multiple tornado touchdowns were from the same parent severe thunderstorm cell where the tornado lifted for a greater than 2 mile range which by NWS definition consitutes a new tornado touchdown. This is explained in the NWS Storm Data Preparation Directive and can be found in this large document by searching “2 mile” in the document.

This is the first time since the June 1st, 2011 Massachusetts Tornado Outbreak that 5 tornadoes were logged on the same day in the commonwealth of Massachusetts since June 1st 2011 and prior to that, the previous time this happened was July 3rd, 1997. Also hard hit with wind damage is the Holyoke/Easthampton/Southampton MA area..
..Damage surveys in Holden and Berlin, MA will take place on Monday due to the rain today and the continued receipt of reports and review of additional data as its received..

..A cold front will approach Southern New England Saturday Afternoon and Evening setting the stage for Scattered to potentially numerous Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats and even isolated tornadoes as a secondary threat..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has continued Northwest, North-Central Connecticut, Western and North-Central Massachusetts in a slight risk for severe weather with a marginal risk of severe weather through Northeast Connecticut, Northwest Rhode Island, south-central and Northeast Massachusetts. Timeframe for severe weather is between 12-10 PM ET Saturday..

A cold front will approach Southern New England as warm and humid conditions for September cover the region. Things are continuing to line up for a rather active severe weather day for the region and NWS Norton has issued a Special Weather Statement highlighting the severe weather potential. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cold front and frontal forcing into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of strong wind shear profiles and expected high instability and this is lining up well currently.
2.) Amount of clearing for heating and destabilization to produce the expected high instability. Models have a sufficient window of clearing by late Saturday morning to mid-afternoon and this is key to expected severe weather potential. Low clouds are burning off in the marginal and slight risk areas to allow for heating.
3.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. For today, they will be scattered and possibly numerous but not every area will see one. There will be scattered to numerous pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.
