Storm Coordination Message #1 – Saturday Evening 11/24/18-Sunday Evening 11/25/18 – Heavy Rain/Strong Wind/Minor Coastal Flooding Potential

Hello to all…

..Strong storm system for tonight through early Sunday Evening will bring a soaking rainfall with urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats, this may start as a period of light freezing rain in Northwest and North-Central Massachusetts, strong winds to portions of Southeast Coastal New England and a round of minor coastal flooding at the time of high tide during midday Sunday..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 3 AM-7 PM Sunday for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. Other parts of East and South Coastal Massachusetts could see wind gusts in the 35-45 MPH range. These winds may cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 10 AM-3 PM Sunday for East Coastal Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Nantucket for minor coastal flooding at the time of high tide resulting in the most vulnerable shore roads becoming flooded within an hour or two of the midday Sunday high tide..

A storm system will affect Southern New England tonight through early Sunday Evening. The headlines depict the current thinking on storm impacts. There are few key factors that will bear watching with this storm system and they are as follows:

1.) There could be a period of freezing rain in Northwest and North-Central Massachusetts. Just a small amount of freezing rain can result in higher impacts with respect to travel conditions. Also, the recent extreme cold conditions may allow for the rain to freeze on contact even with temperatures slightly above freezing given the extreme cold of the past few days and the fact the precipitation will fall during the evening.
2.) The storm system has been trending a bit stronger in recent runs and this could affect wind and coastal flood potential as well as the extent and locations of the heaviest rainfall. This will bear watching as we approach the storm event.
