Storm Coordination Message #2 – Saturday Night 2/17/18-Sunday Morning 2/18/18 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Quick Hitting Winter Storm likely to bring a plowable snowfall to much of Southern New England. Track trend has been a bit further southeast meaning inclusion of Barnstable County Massachusetts in the Winter Storm Watch area and potentially highest snowfall amounts in Southeast New England..
..A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Saturday Night into early Sunday Morning for Eastern Hampden, Southern Worcester, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Northern Connecticut for 4-8″ of snow. The snow will be of heavier and wetter consistency and this could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages if higher amounts are realized. 3-6″ of snow is possible north of the Winter Storm Watch area depending on the storm track..
..Confidence in snowfall amounts and storm scenario is moderate at this time with uncertainty as to the rain-snow line in Southeast New England and how far north and west the plowable snow will cover in Southern New England. A storm track closer to the coast means more mixing of rain in Southeast Coastal areas and heavier snow to the north and west while a track further south and east means lighter snowfall amounts in the northern and western parts of the region and higher snow totals and no rain-snow mixing issues in Southeast New England. As mentioned in the top headline, the track trend has been a bit further southeast over the course of Friday..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports and wet snow damage reports. Another coordination message will be posted by 10 AM Saturday Morning. Below is the NWS Taunton Winter Storm Watch Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook, Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook, Snowfall Maps and Facebook Storm Briefing Post..

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Sunday 2/11/18 Heavy Rainfall/Flood Potential

Hello to all…

..Storm System will bring a widespread rainfall of 1-2″ with isolated higher amounts of 2-3″ in Southeast New England as well as the potential for strong winds on the Cape and Islands..
..A Flood Watch is in effect for all of Rhode Island and Bristol, Plymouth and Barnstable Counties of Massachusetts through Sunday Evening for this rainfall of 1-3″. These rains could bring urban to poor drainage flooding and a few small rivers such as the Pawtuxet, Pawcatuck and Wood Rivers to minor flood stage..
..Strong Wind Gusts on the Cape and Islands are possible Sunday Evening. At this time, wind gusts of around 40 MPH are possible but there is a low risk for wind gusts as high as 45-50 MPH and will be monitored in future updates..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for rainfall, flooding and wind reports through Sunday Evening. This will be the only coordination message unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Storm Coordination Message #2 – Wednesday 2/7/18 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Storm System will move across Southern New England Wednesday with the potential for heavy snow in portions of northern and western Southern New England, accumulating mixed precipitation in central interior and potentially northeast coastal locations with snow over to rain in Southeast New England. Snowfall could be wet and heavy in interior locations under the Winter Storm Warning and northern areas of the Winter Weather Advisory which could lead to isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 AM to 10 PM Wednesday for Franklin, Hampshire, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties for 5-8 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts of up to 10 inches and ice accumulations of one-tenth inch..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 AM to 10 PM Wednesday for Hartford County Connecticut, Hampden, Central Middlesex, Southern Worcester and Western Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 3-5″ of snow and one-tenth inch of ice accretion..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 AM to 6 PM Wednesday for Tolland and Windham Counties of Connecticut, Eastern Essex, Norfolk, Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk, Counties of Massachusetts and Northwest Providence County of Rhode Island for 2-4″ of snow and one-tenth inch of ice accretion..
..Areas outside of the Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory areas could see a coating to 2″ of snow before a changeover to rain and the rain will be heavy at times. Wind gusts to 40 MPH are possible in portions of Southeast Coastal New England..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor this storm system for Wednesday. Ops at NWS Taunton are possible if the concern for wet snow and/or ice damage increases..

A storm system will move across Southern New England on Wednesday with the potential for heavy snowfall and a period of snowfall around 1″ per hour. There is high confidence that a plowable snowfall will occur and the headlines reflect current thinking with Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories for much of the interior with the heaviest snowfall in Western and Northern Massachusetts. There remains some spread in the model guidance and snowfall and icing amounts could be adjusted further based on the track of the storm and the position and track of the rain-snow line based on the storm track. Some models continue to have the storm track near the Cape Cod Canal or into Southeast New England while other reliable model guidance brings the track over or just north of Boston. This will affect the rain-snow line and ultimately snow and ice amounts in the Winter Storm Warning and advisory areas but again the headlines reflect the current thinking. Southeast New England is likely to see mostly rain with this storm system after a period of snow at the start.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor this storm system for Wednesday. Ops at NWS Taunton are possible if the concern for wet snow and/or icing damage increases. This will likely be the last coordination message unless time allows for another full update if significant change occurs or if ops are initiated at NWS, a shortened coordination message will be posted again if time allows for an update. Special Announcement & Off-Topic Post: Volunteers Still Needed for the 2018 Boston Marathon – Amateur Radio Operators as well as Medical and Other Volunteers

Hello to all…

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make an off-topic post on Volunteers (particularly Amateur Radio oriented but opportunities exist for medical and non-Amateur Radio volunteers for the 2018 Boston Marathon. Registration information is below:

There are volunteer opportunities for the 2018 Boston Marathon including for Amateur Radio Operators across the start, course, finish and with transportation medical buses and for non-Amateur Radio Operators for various medical and logistical roles across these areas. Volunteer registration is open through Wednesday February 7th. For volunteer information registration and information, please see the following link:

http://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/event-information/volunteer-information/volunteer-registration.aspx

If you are interested in volunteering for the 2018 Boston Marathon but are not sure at this early stage about whether you can participate, we encourage you to register now and if it turns out you cannot volunteer, send notification that you can no longer volunteer as early as possible. It will be very difficult to bring in volunteers once registration closes and if you register and can no longer volunteer at the event, please let us know as early as possible so contingency planning can be completed.

For Amateur Radio/Ham Radio Operators, you don’t need to specify any group name or passcode. Just make sure you request at least one ham radio assignment in your preferences. Once you get your application confirmation number, you’re all set.

If you’re a returning volunteer (whether an Amateur Radio or non-Amateur Radio assignment), you’ll be asked to provide your BAA Volunteer Loyalty Number. You should’ve received that in a separate e-mail from the BAA today. There’s also a tool to look it up on the BAA volunteer site. If you still have trouble finding it, e-mail us and we can help you out.

Don’t delay! Volunteer registration closes on Wednesday February 7th. Help us get the word out by forwarding this e-mail to your club and other hams who might like to volunteer and for non-hams to any volunteer groups who might be interested in supporting the event. Most volunteers first learn about the event through word of mouth. If you know new amateurs or other new people involved in volunteering for events who might like to volunteer, make sure to let them know about it. Even just a quick mention at your club meeting or regular meeting of your organization can be a big help.

If you have any questions about volunteer registration, or the 2018 Marathon generally, please get in touch anytime. Volunteering at the Marathon is a big job, and we appreciate the time and effort everyone puts into it. We’re happy to do what we can to make your work more comfortable or effective.

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Late Thursday Night 2/1/18-Friday Morning 2/2/18 Snowfall Potential

Hello to all…

..A brief quick hitting snow along with a flash freeze timed with the Friday morning commute could cause travel issues and delays across portions of Southern New England. Plan ahead if travelling during the morning commute tomorrow particularly in Central and Eastern New England..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 PM Thursday Evening to 9 AM Friday Morning for Tolland and Windham Counties of Connecticut and Worcester County of Massachusetts for 2-4″ of snow. A coating to 2″ of snow is expected across much of the rest of Southern New England however its noted that portions of Southeast New England and possibly other parts of Eastern New England could see more snow based on signals in high resolution models. While not a big snowfall event overall, the timing of the snow near the morning commute along with the flash freeze with temperatures dipping quickly below freezing makes the impact potentially more significant and will bear watching..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system through late morning Friday. Another coordination message could be issued either late tonight or early Friday Morning if time allows and an upgrade to the situation occurs. Below is the NWS Taunton Winter Weather Advisory Statement, Special Weather Statement, Hazardous Weather Outlook, Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook and Snowfall Maps..

Storm Coordination Message #3 – Monday Late PM 1/29/18 Through Tuesday Morning 1/30/18 Storm Event

Hello to all…

..Coastal Low will track close enough to bring some accumulating snow to portions of Southeast New England. Track confidence is a bit lower than normal for snowfall forecast this close to an event..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 AM Tuesday for Cape Cod and the Islands, Plymouth and Southern Bristol Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow. Other parts of Southeast Massachusetts and into Rhode Island and East Coastal Massachusetts will likely see at least 1-3″ of snow with 1″ or less for other areas of Southern New England..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect through 8 AM Tuesday Morning for Cape Cod and the Islands and Eastern and Southern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. These winds could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 8 AM-Noon Tuesday for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and Nantucket for minor coastal flooding of shore roads during the Tuesday Morning high tide cycle..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system for late Monday Afternoon into Tuesday Morning..

The headlines above reflect the current thinking on accumulating snow, strong winds and minor coastal flooding for portions of Eastern New England. Winter Weather, Wind and Coastal Flood Advisories continue for the same areas as the last update. Models are continuing to struggle particularly with the snowfall portion of the forecast in terms of how heavy precipitation will be in Southeast New England as well as the western end of the precipitation shield and the headlines reflect the current thinking. A track of the coastal low a bit closer to the coast would mean heavier snowfall in the advisory area and a bit more westward extension to the snow shield while a track further offshore would mean lighter snowfall in the advisory area and the cutoff of the snow further to the east.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system for late Monday Afternoon into Tuesday Morning. This will be the last coordination message on this event as we move into self-activation mode. Storm Coordination Message #2 – Monday Late PM 1/29/18 Through Tuesday Morning 1/30/18 Storm Event

Hello to all…

..Coastal Low will track close enough to bring some accumulating snow to portions of Southeast New England and will need to monitor for a track closer to Southern New England..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 4 PM Monday to 10 AM Tuesday for Cape Cod and the Islands, Plymouth and Southern Bristol Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow. Other parts of Southeast Massachusetts and into Rhode Island and East Coastal Massachusetts will likely see at least 1-3″ of snow with 1″ or less for other areas of Southern New England..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 10 PM Monday Evening through 7 AM Tuesday Morning for Cape Cod and the Islands and Eastern and Southern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. These winds could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 8 AM-Noon Tuesday for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and Nantucket for minor coastal flooding of shore roads during the Tuesday Morning high tide cycle..
..Track trends will bear watching as the trend closer to the coast abated for a model cycle but returned in the latest model cycle. Trends will continue to be monitored for the possibility of higher snowfall totals in the advisory area and some points north and west of the current Winter Weather Advisory area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system for late Monday Afternoon into Tuesday Morning..

The headlines above reflect the current thinking on accumulating snow, strong winds and minor coastal flooding for portions of Eastern New England. Wind and Coastal Flood Advisories have been issued for portions of the area along with the expansion of the Winter Weather Advisory into Southern Bristol County Massachusetts. Model trends during the day yesterday were tracking closer to the coast with heavier precipitation and that abated for one model cycle. That trend may be resuming again and will bear close watching for possibly higher snowfall amounts particularly in the advisory areas. Models are continuing to struggle with the handling of heavier precipitation and a coastal low just east of the Florida coast and how that will track will determine whether the current snow amounts occur as expected or if there will be heavier or lighter snowfall amounts.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the storm system for late Monday Afternoon into Tuesday Morning. Another coordination message will be posted by 11 PM Monday Evening.
