Storm Coordination Message #2 – Friday 2/7/25 Strong Wind Gust Potential & Saturday Night 2/8/25-Sunday AM 2/9/25 Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..Active Weather Pattern Continues through the weekend with strong wind gusts Friday and a moderate to significant winter storm for Saturday Night into Sunday Morning..
..A Wind Advisory remains in effect through 4 PM Friday for Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 15-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. Areas outside of the advisory could see wind gusts of up to 40-45 MPH possible with isolated higher gusts. These winds could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday Evening through late Sunday Morning for the entire NWS Norton Coverage Area except for Marthas Vineyard and Nantucket Islands for 6-9″ of snow with isolated higher amounts. The islands could see a wintry mix which will hold down snowfall amounts but will still likely result in a plowable snowfall..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the strong wind gust potential for Friday. SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely for the Saturday Night to Sunday Morning Winter Storm with most of the call-up nets likely centered around Sunday Morning depending on a late start time in the snow Saturday Night..

An active weather pattern continues for Southern New England. The headlines depict the current thinking for strong wind gust potential for Friday and the winter storm potential for Saturday Night into Sunday. Key factors for the winter storm for Saturday Night to Sunday includes:

1.) The current track of the winter storm would keep all areas snow except for the islands. The immediate south coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island maybe trending more towards an all snow or mostly snow with just a small bit of mixed precipitation at the start of the event.
2.) Snowfall totals will be widespread plowable/shovelable snowfall based on the current storm track
3.) Trends on storm intensity and model track will be monitored for any forecast changes as we are still approximately 36-48 hours from the storm event

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the strong wind gust potential for Friday. SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely for the Saturday Night to Sunday Morning Winter Storm with most of the call-up nets likely centered around Sunday Morning depending on a late start time in the snow Saturday Night. The next coordination message will be posted by 11 PM Friday Evening. Storm Coordination Message #3 – Thursday 2/6/25 Accumulating Snow/Wintry Mix Potential

Hello to all…

..Active Winter Weather Pattern over the next 1-2 weeks for Southern New England. Storm system for Thursday to bring accumulating snow before a wintry mix of precipitation in interior areas before ending. Coastal locations to see a snow to wintry mix to rain as the system departs. Another potentially somewhat heavier snowstorm is possible Saturday Night into Sunday but too early to get amounts and impacts and precip type issues/wintry mix could occur depending on that storm’s track..
..A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 7 AM to 7 PM Thursday for the entire NWS Norton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod & the Islands for 1-4″ of snow and light glaze of ice resulting in slippery travel potentially for both the morning and evening commute. Coastal areas of the advisory could see a changeover to rain before ending. Cape Cod and the Islands could receive a coating to 2″ of snow before a changeover to a wintry mix and then rain as the storm system departs..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports, icing reports and changeover in precipitation type for Thursday with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets possible..

An active winter weather pattern is setting up over the next 1-2 weeks for Southern New England. The storms will be of light to moderate in nature at least based on current model runs and we will take each storm one at a time. The first in the series of storms is Thursday with another potentially somewhat heavier snowstorm possible Saturday Night into Sunday but too early to get amounts and impacts and precip type issues/wintry mix could occur depending on that storm’s track so we will focus on the Thursday storm. The headlines depict the current thinking for Thursday. Key factors remain:

1.) How long and how deep the cold air remains over the region. This will determine the amount of snow accumulation versus ice accumulation for the area and will also determine how impactful travel will be during the day Thursday. It will also determine what coastal areas see in terms of snow vs. wintry mix/freezing rain vs. rain for the region.
2.) Both Morning and Evening commutes will be impacted with snow starting west to east during the morning commute and precipitation ending near or during the evening commute. The start/end times and precip type will determine which commute is impacted worse or if both are impacted the same way.
3.) Snow will start and will be briefly moderate to heavy at times between 6-10 AM before a changeover to sleet and freezing rain from Southwest to Northeast between 12-3 PM. In interior locations, temperatures are likely to be below freezing and remain a sleet/freezing rain mix while coastal areas are likely to see a changeover to rain before ending.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports, icing reports and changeover in precipitation type for Thursday with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets possible. The next coordination message, if time allows, will be posted by 9 AM Thursday Morning and will potentially have an Amateur Radio Net Schedule.
