Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Friday August 18th, 2017 Severe Weather/Flood Potential

Hello to all…

..Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and an isolated strong to severe thunderstorm with heavy rainfall, strong to damaging winds, and frequent lightning are possible today across Western Massachusetts and Western Connecticut today. Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall are also possible in other parts of interior Southern New England from Boston to Providence north and west this afternoon and evening. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed Western Massachusetts and Western Connecticut in a marginal risk for severe weather and the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has placed much of Southern New England from Boston to Providence north and west in a slight risk for excessive rainfall..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible any time after Noon today to monitor severe weather and flood potential..

At 710 AM, Doppler Radar showed a line of showers and embedded heavier downpours along the New York/Massachusetts/Connecticut line moving east to east-northeastward and will be the first round of rainfall. Radar also shows another area behind that and as the warm front continues to lift northeastward, dewpoints will climb significantly. Cloud cover will likely be extensive throughout the day but some breaks in the cloud cover could allows for some further destabilization in the atmosphere between the current showers and heavier downpours and the next expected round of showers and thunderstorms later in the day. Wind shear profiles will be sufficient for an isolated severe weather threat across Western Massachusetts and Western Connecticut and the wind shear profiles and high dewpoints will have the potential for thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall across much of interior Southern New England from Boston to Providence north and west. The headlines cover the areas affected. The tropical air mass and strong wind shear profiles may also mean a low risk for an isolated tornado in Western Massachusetts and Western Connecticut.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible any time after Noon today to monitor severe weather and flood potential. This will likely be the only complete coordination message on the severe weather and flood potential. A shortened coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops at NWS Taunton are initiated. Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Saturday August 5th, 2017 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms are possible Saturday mid-morning lasting through early evening across Southern New England. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall with urban to poor drainage flooding are the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has continued the region in a Marginal Risk for severe weather for today..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 1000 AM EDT with SKYWARN Self-Activation monitoring the first round of activity until 1000 AM EDT..

At 850 AM, Doppler Radar was showing the first cluster of thunderstorms moving through Central Massachusetts and East-Central Connecticut. This activity will swing northeast through Southern New England from mid-morning to early afternoon with an isolated severe thunderstorm risk. Depending on instability and timing of the actual cold front currently back in Eastern New York, a second round of activity could occur in the mid-afternoon through early evening hours which may also have the potential for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms. The extent of the severe weather threat will be determined by the timing of the cold front into the region and cloud cover from the first round of convection and how intense either that first round of convection will be as it destabilizes to some extent as the storms move further northeast or if the second round of convection can form and whether it will be more significant.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 1000 AM EDT with SKYWARN Self-Activation monitoring the first round of activity until 1000 AM EDT. This will be the last coordination message as we shift into operations mode. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Saturday August 5th, 2017 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms are possible Saturday possibly as early as mid to late morning lasting through early evening. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall with urban to poor drainage flooding are the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed the region in a Marginal Risk for severe weather with the potential for an upgrade to slight risk in future outlooks..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely on Saturday potentially starting as early as 9 AM or as late as Noon lasting through early evening to monitor severe weather potential..

Saturday will bring a cold front through Southern New England ending the recent heat and humidity over the region. There could be potentially two rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms one in the mid-morning to early afternoon and then a second round in the mid-afternoon to early evening. The extent of the severe weather threat will be determined by the timing of the cold front into the region and cloud cover from the first round of convection and how intense either that first round of convection will be or if the second round of convection will be more significant.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely on Saturday potentially starting as early as 9 AM or as late as Noon lasting through early evening to monitor severe weather potential. Another coordination message will be posted by 9 AM Saturday. Below is the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook, Experimental Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook and SPC Day-2 Convective Outlook:

Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Wednesday 8/2/17 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms likely today across much of Southern New England particularly along and north and west of the Boston to Providence corridor. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and torrential rainfall with the potential of urban and poor drainage flooding to flash flooding are the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed much of Southern New England in a marginal risk for severe weather with the timeframe between 12-8 PM EDT..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 1 PM EDT Wednesday..

Heating and destabilization will occur across Southern New England today and an impulse in the atmosphere that will providing cooling temperatures aloft. Wind shear values are weak which will likely mitigate a more significant event but the level of moisture in the atmosphere, some cooling aloft and an impulse in the atmosphere will set the stage for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across much of Southern New England. The headlines depict the severe weather potential.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 1 PM EDT Wednesday. This will be the only coordination message as we shift into operations mode. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday Night to Early Friday Morning 7/20/17-7/21/17 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms or potentially a complex of thunderstorms in a mesocale convective system is possible Thursday Evening or during the Thursday Night overnight hours. Strong to damaging winds, hail, torrential rainfall with urban and poor drainage flooding and frequent lightning are the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed far western New England in a marginal risk for severe weather..
..The key item is placement of features to fire off a convective complex and whether those features get into Southern New England or if the activity slides south and west of Southern New England. These details will become better defined as we get into Thursday. The key item here is to note that this activity could occur during the evening and overnight hours due to intense heat and humidity and the timing of the complex into the region..
..SKYWARN Activation in some form with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible for Thursday Evening and into the overnight hours. Another coordination message will be posted by 1 PM Thursday Afternoon. Below is the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook, Experimental Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook and SPC Day-2 Convective Outlook..

Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Monday 7/17/17 Severe Weather Potential in Western/North-Central Massachusetts & Northwest Connecticut

Hello to all…

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms are possible in Western Massachusetts from Central Worcester County Massachusetts and Hartford County Connecticut west anytime between 3-9 PM Monday. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall with urban and poor drainage flooding are the main threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed this area into a marginal to slight risk of severe weather and there remains a slight risk of severe weather across New York, Vermont & Northeast Pennsylvania..
..Key question on any severe weather potential is how close a frontal system/trough gets to this area and whether cooling temperatures aloft get close enough to this area along with heating and destabilization of the day is sufficient to realize severe weather potential. Wind fields are marginally sufficient for severe weather if instability levels and cooling aloft works far enough east into the Marginal to Slight risk area and the risk area has shifted a bit more east indicating the cooling aloft could make it far enough east to affect parts of our coverage area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely mid to late Monday Afternoon into the evening to monitor this severe weather potential. Ops at NWS Taunton are possible depending on the coverage of any strong to severe thunderstorms in Western and North-Central Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut. This will be the last complete coordination message on this severe weather potential. A shortened coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops at NWS Taunton are initiated. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday 7/13/17 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all…

..Isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are possible to likely again across sections of Southern New England particularly in Southwest Massachusetts from Hampshire and Hampden Counties of Massachusetts through Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Southeast Massachusetts, potentially confined to the South Coast this Thursday Afternoon and Evening. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and urban to poor drainage flooding and even flash flooding are the primary threats.
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed much of Southern New England in a marginal to slight risk of severe weather for today through tonight but this threat is likely to be along and south/southwest of the cold frontal boundary..
..A Flash Flood Watch is in effect through 8 PM EDT for Northern Connecticut, Rhode Island, Bristol, Plymouth, Hampshire and Hampden Counties of Massachusetts for flash flooding of urban and poor drainage areas..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 200 PM EDT Thursday Afternoon for severe weather potential..

Yesterday brought one of the more significant severe weather and flash flood events of the spring-summer 2017 season to date with numerous wind damage and hail reports as well as flash flooding reports. Below is the NWS Taunton Public Information Statement, Local Storm Report and WX1BOX Facebook Photo Album from the event:

NWS Taunton Public Information Statement:
http://kamala.cod.edu/offs/KBOX/1707131457.nous41.html

NWS Taunton Local Storm Report:
http://kamala.cod.edu/offs/KBOX/1707130243.nwus51.html

For today, a cold frontal boundary is draped over South-Central Massachusetts through Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts just north of the south coast. This boundary divides much cooler air to the north and east from very warm and humid air to the south. There could be some question on whether parts of Southern New England will be deep enough into the warm sector but areas of Southwest Massachusetts through Connecticut, parts of southern Rhode Island and perhaps South Coastal Massachusetts will likely have a chance for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms similar to yesterday but over more southern and western parts of the area southwest of the cold front. The headlines above depict the situation well.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 2 PM today. This will be the only coordination message as we shift into operations mode.
