Storm Coordination Message #1 – Tuesday 1/16/24 Accumulating Snow/Wintry Mix Event

Hello to all…

..A storm system will move south of Southern New England bringing accumulating snow to portions of interior Southern New England with accumulating snow and some mixed precipitation to the I-95 corridor for Tuesday. The Tuesday Morning commute will have slippery travel and the evening commute could have at least some slippery travel impacts as well..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect through 7 PM Tuesday Evening for Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow and slippery travel conditions. A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect through 7 PM Tuesday Evening for Northern Connecticut, Providence, Kent Counties Rhode Island, Southern Worcester, Norfolk, Essex, Suffolk, Central and Southeast Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 1-3″ of snow and the potential for snow mixing with and changing to sleet and freezing rain for a light glaze of ice after the morning commute. Areas outside of the advisory will receive a coating to 2″ of snow with precip mixing with sleet and freezing rain then changing to rain..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snow total reports, precipitation type changeover and any hazardous impacts from icing. A few Amateur Radio call-up nets could be utilized during the day Tuesday for snowfall total reports and precipitation type updates. This will be the only coordination message on this storm unless a significant change to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Below is the NWS Boston/Norton Area Forecast Discussion, Winter Weather Advisory Statement/Snowfall Map and Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook..

Special Announcement & Off-Topic Post: Amateur Radio Volunteers Still Needed for the 2024 Boston Marathon

Hello to all…

We appreciate everyone’s patience as we make an off-topic post on the need for Amateur Radio Volunteers for the 2024 Boston Marathon. In addition, there is a continued need for medical volunteers for the 2024 Boston Marathon and those interested in volunteering as a medical or general volunteer can use the register.hamradioboston.org link and they will be brought to the general volunteer page which can be utilized for those that are not Amateur Radio Operators to volunteer. Further details for Amateur Radio volunteers follow below:

Volunteer registration for the 2024 Boston Marathon is open. Returning volunteers have received an email from the BAA that included registration instructions. In order to make registration as smooth as possible, we are providing specific instructions for our Amateur Radio Operator (ARO) volunteers.

If you haven’t previously volunteered, or have a friend who would like to volunteer, please go directly to the Volunteer Registration page and follow the instructions for new volunteers.

Step by Step Sign Up Guide:
https://hamradioboston.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/44002497536-2024-volunteer-registration-step-by-step-guide

A few notes for volunteers:

Almost all amateur radio positions are single person assignments. We are not able to group people on a single assignment, but we will try to accommodate which segment you are assigned to in order to allow for similar start/end times.

Don’t delay! Volunteer registration closes on Friday, February 2 at 5:00 PM EST. It would help our planning processes if you could complete your registration by Friday, January 26.

Help us get the word out by forwarding this email to your club and other amateur radio operators who might wish to volunteer. Most volunteers first learn about the event through word of mouth. If you know new licensees who might like to join us, please make sure to let them know about it. Even just a quick mention at your club meeting can be a big help!

If you have any questions about the upcoming volunteer registration period, or the 2024 Marathon generally, please get in touch anytime. Volunteering at the Marathon is a big job and we appreciate the time and effort everyone puts into it. We’re happy to do what we can to make your work fun, comfortable, and effective.

We look forward to seeing everyone again soon.

Thank you, and 73,

Boston Marathon Communications Committee

Snow Squall Coordination Message #1 – Sunday Afternoon & Evening Snow Squall Potential

Hello to all…

..Snow Squalls with brief reduced visibility and the potential for wind gusts with and behind these snow squalls along and behind an Arctic Cold Front will have the potential to cause hazardous travel conditions this afternoon and evening. While all of Southern New England should monitor this potential, the areas for greatest impact is in Western and Central Massachusetts, Northern Connecticut and Northwest Rhode Island. Not all areas will see snow squalls but those that do could see rapidly changing road and weather conditions. Those areas that get squalls could see a quick coating to 2″ of snow in a short period of time..
..Temperatures will rapidly fall below freezing and any initial wet roadways from snow squalls or rain changing to the snow squalls could cause icy road conditions in a short period of time with rapidly reduced visibilities. Isolated thundersnow reports are also possible. Timing into western Southern New England is between 12-2 PM, 2-4 PM for central Southern New England and 4-6 PM for eastern Southern New England..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with short-fused Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets likely for reports on snow squalls, visibility in those squalls, any thundersnow, wind damage, measured wind gusts 40 MPH or greater and snow accumulation reports to monitor these conditions. This will be the only coordination message as we shift into operations mode..
..Post Storm Coordination messages for prior storms including the Friday Evening to Saturday Morning storm event will follow over the next few days. Pictures and videos from that storm event, prior storm events from earlier this week and from potential snow squalls that affect us today can be sent as a reply to this message, via our WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds and via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. Storm Coordination Message #2 – Friday Evening 1/12/24-Sunday 1/15/24 & Post Storm Coordination Message #2 – Tuesday Evening 1/9/24-Wednesday 1/10/24

Hello to all…

..Tuesday Evening into Wednesday storm system caused significant flooding of river, streams and urban areas with 2-6″ of rainfall widespread over Southern New England and isolated to scattered pockets of wind damage across much of Southern New England. Some rivers and streams remain in flood as another storm system will bring the potential for another round of heavy rainfall, strong to damaging winds and coastal flooding to the region..
..A Flood Watch is in effect through Saturday for the entire NWS Norton coverage area through Saturday Evening for additional rainfall of 1-2″ with isolated higher amounts leading to additional snow melt, continued river and stream flooding on those rivers and streams that remain in flood and potentially renewed river, stream, urban and poor drainage flooding in the region where flooding in those areas have receded..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 1 AM to 1 PM Saturday for Bristol, Eastern Kent, Newport, Washington Counties of Rhode Island including Block Island, Eastern Essex, Suffolk, Eastern Norfolk, Plymouth, Southern Bristol Counties, Cape Cod and the Islands of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts to 55 MPH with isolated higher gusts likely leading to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages. Additional strong wind gusts can occur later Saturday Night into Sunday with gusts of at least 40-45 MPH possible..
..A Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect from Saturday Morning through Saturday Afternoon for South Coastal Massachusetts and South Coastal Rhode Island from 7 AM to 1 PM Saturday and East Coastal Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands from 10 AM to 4 PM Saturday for minor to moderate coastal flooding affecting shore roads at the time of the Saturday Morning/Afternoon high tide cycle..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely with Amateur Radio call-up nets possible for this storm system. Pictures and videos of storm damage and flooding from this storm as well as for the past storm on Tuesday Evening into Wednesday can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds and via the email address pics@nsradio.org..

Another storm system similar to Tuesday Night into Wednesday with somewhat less rainfall and wind will affect the region tonight through midday Saturday. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) Winds will be near/just below High Wind Warning criteria in the Wind Advisory area and a few isolated wind gusts may reach High Wind Warning criteria. This will result in scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages. Strong wind gusts of 40-45 MPH can continue Saturday Night into Sunday.
2.) Heavy rainfall of 1-2″ with isolated amounts of up to 3″ across the region with the highest amounts over Connecticut, Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts. This will renew flooding of river and streams that have receded and keep rivers that are already flooding still above flood stage with new rises. Urban and street flooding will be possible during the heaviest rainfall.
3.) Minor to moderate coastal flooding is likely at the time of high tide on shore roads across South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island as well as East Coastal Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands, reports, pictures and videos of coastal flooding in these areas would be helpful to determine the extent of the flooding.

SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely with Amateur Radio call-up nets possible for this storm system. Pictures and videos of storm damage and flooding from this storm as well as for the past storm on Tuesday Evening into Wednesday can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds and via the email address pics@nsradio.org. This will be the last coordination message as we shift into operations mode. Storm Coordination Message #3 – Tuesday Late Afternoon 1/9/24-Wednesday Evening 1/10/24 – Multi-Faceted Storm System

Hello to all…

..Another intense storm which will largely be a heavy rainfall with some brief heavy snowfall in the hill towns of Western Massachusetts, river, stream, urban flooding, possible coastal flooding and damaging wind event on track to affect the region Tuesday Night into Wednesday..
..A Flood Watch remains in effect for the entire NWS Norton coverage area except for Cape Cod and the Islands for Tuesday Evening through Wednesday Afternoon due to heavy rainfall of 2-3″ with isolated higher amounts combined with snow melt can result in river, stream and urban flooding..
..A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 5 PM Tuesday Evening to 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for South Coastal Massachusetts including Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts and South Coastal Rhode Island and is now expanded to Eastern Essex and the rest of Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 30-40 MPH with gusts to 65 MPH and isolated higher gusts likely. These winds will cause scattered to numerous pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect for the rest of the NWS Norton Coverage Area from 5 PM Tuesday Evening to 1 PM Wednesday Afternoon for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50-55 MPH. These winds will cause scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Warning is now in effect from 5 AM-9 AM Wednesday Morning for Southern Bristol County Massachusetts, Southeast Providence, Eastern Kent, Bristol, Newport and Washington Counties of Rhode Island and from 6-10 AM for Dukes County for minor to moderate coastal flooding of shore roads at the time of high tide in these areas..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 5 AM-9 AM Wednesday Morning for Southern Plymouth County Massachusetts for minor to isolated moderate coastal flooding of shore roads at the time of high tide in these areas..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect from 8 AM-12 PM Wednesday for East Coastal Massachusetts, Cape Cod and Nantucket for minor coastal flooding of shore roads at the time of high tide in these areas..
..A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 3 PM Tuesday Afternoon to Midnight Tuesday Night for Western Franklin and Western Hampshire Counties of Massachusetts for 2-5″ of snow before a changeover to rain causing slippery travel. Other parts of Western and Central Massachusetts particularly in the higher elevations could see a coating to 2″ of snow as well as icing from sleet and freezing rain causing slippery travel in the evening commute .
..SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets as needed for this storm system Tuesday Night into Wednesday. Pictures and videos of storm damage and flooding from this storm as well as for the past coastal storm or prior storm events can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds and via the email address pics@nsradio.org

A multi-faceted storm similar to the the December 17th-18th, 2023 storm is on track for the region, The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The ability of winds to get down to the surface in inland areas. If temperatures warm slightly more than expected, that could allow for stronger winds to reach the surface and more wind damage issues in these areas. Southeast New England and East Coastal Massachusetts should prepare for a high impact event similar to the December 17th-18th 2023 storm event.
2.) Heavy rainfall of 2-3″+ combined with snow melt could create flooding issues equivalent or somewhat worse than what was experienced on December 17th-18th 2023.
3.) Coastal flooding issues along South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island could be the equivalent of what occurred in the December 17th-18th 2023 storm event. East Coastal Massachusetts could also see minor coastal flooding as well at the time of high tide. With Southeast winds, east coastal Massachusetts could see that coastal flooding in somewhat different areas than when Northeast, North-Northeast or Northerly winds occur.
4.) Snow and some icing conditions will occur in Western and Central Massachusetts during the evening commute through mid to late evening before a changeover to a windswept heavy rain and the flooding concerns as mentioned above

SKYWARN Self-Activation is likely with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets as needed for this storm system Tuesday Night into Wednesday. Pictures and videos of storm damage and flooding from this storm as well as for the past coastal storm or prior storm events can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook and Twitter feeds and via the email address pics@nsradio.org This will be the last coordination message as we shift into operations mode. Please note the following Amateur Radio Net Schedule information and what repeaters will be monitored on an as needed basis:

146.940-Mount Tom Repeater PL: 127.3 Hz, 530 PM, 730 PM, 930 PM, 1130 PM Tuesday Evening, Nets restart at 530 AM at every 2 hour intervals on Wednesday

Storm Coordination Message #4 – Saturday PM 1/6/24-Sunday Night 1/7/24 Coastal Winter Storm Hazards

Hello to all…

..A coastal storm will bring significant snow especially to interior areas of Southern New England with strong to damaging winds possible at the coast and the potential for locations near the rain-snow line to have a heavier wet snow that could cause tree and power line damage from wet snow load. Storm timeframe is from late Saturday Afternoon through Sunday Night..
..A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 4 PM Saturday Afternoon through 1 AM Monday Morning for Northern Connecticut, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester, Essex, and North-Central Middlesex, Counties of Massachusetts for 6-12″ of snow and wind gusts of 40 MPH. In the southern and eastern areas of the Winter Storm Warning area, the snow could be heavy and wet and that combined with wind gusts could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages from the combination of strong winds and snow load..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 4 PM Saturday Afternoon through 1 AM Monday Morning for Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk, and Northwest Providence County Rhode Island for 6-12″ of snow and wind gusts of 40 MPH. In this area, the snow will be heavy and wet and that combined with wind gusts could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages from the combination of strong winds and snow load. The worst conditions are expected in two rounds, one during Saturday Night and the second late Sunday Morning into Sunday Afternoon with a flash freeze also possible..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 4 PM Saturday Afternoon to 1 AM Monday Morning for Southeast Providence, Kent and Northern Bristol County of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow and wind gusts of 40 MPH. In this area, the snow will be heavy and wet and that combined with wind gusts could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages from the combination of strong winds and snow load. The worst conditions are expected in two rounds, one during Saturday Night and the second late Sunday Morning into Sunday Afternoon with a flash freeze also possible..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 4 PM Saturday Afternoon to 1 AM Monday Morning for Newport, Bristol, Washington Counties of Rhode Island, Southern Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 2-4″ of snow and wind gusts of 40 MPH. If snow amounts approach 4″ or higher, the snow will be heavy and wet and that combined with wind gusts could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages from the combination of strong winds and snow load. The worst conditions are expected in two rounds, one during Saturday Night and the second late Sunday Morning into Sunday Afternoon with a flash freeze also possible. The Cape and Islands will receive 2″ of snow or less with the highest amounts near the Cape Cod Canal..
..A Wind Advisory is now in effect for Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands from 10 PM Saturday Evening to 10 PM Sunday Evening for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. These winds could cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Saturday Night into Sunday for snowfall reports, measured wind gusts 40 MPH or greater and any snow load/wind damage reports. An initial Amateur Radio Net Schedule of nets is posted in this message and if time allows this will be updated. Pictures and videos of storm damage can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook/Twitter feed or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter for the pictures/videos unless otherwise indicated..

A coastal storm will bring the first significant snowfall to much of Southern New England. The headlines depict the current thinking given recent model trends on the rain-snow-mix line where the Winter Storm Watch area was split into Warnings on the northern and western end and Winter Weather Advisories on the south and east end with Winter Weather Advisories through the remainder of Southeast New England except for Cape Cod and the Islands. A Wind Advisory was also posted for Eastern Plymouth County and Cape Cod and the Islands. Key factors remain:

1.) The track of the storm as that will depict whether the rain-snow line is further offshore or moves inland into the I-95 corridor of Southeast New England. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories were posted based on current weather model trends with the rain-snow line.
2.) The intensity of the storm as that will depict the strength of the winds and whether higher snowfall amounts can be realized over a portion of Southern New England.
3.) The speed of the storm as it moves through the area.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Saturday Night into Sunday for snowfall reports, measured wind gusts 40 MPH or greater and any snow load/wind damage reports. An initial Amateur Radio Net Schedule of nets is posted in this message and if time allows this will be updated. The schedule of nets appears below:

Western Mass: 146.940-Mount Tom Repeater PL: 127.3 Hz – 630 PM, 830 PM, 1030 PM Saturday Evening and Sunday Morning starting at 630 AM and then the ARES Nets that follow at 845/915 AM – we will request snow total and any damage report info – Additional nets after this time will be done on 2 hour intervals as needed starting at 1130 AM Sunday Morning
Central Mass: 146.970-Paxton Repeater PL: 114.8 Hz, 830 PM and 1030 PM Saturday Evening and Sunday Morning 730 AM, the 930 AM ARES Net will also request snowfall reports and any damage report info and then additional nets at 1130 AM and later as needed
Eastern Mass: Working on scheduling of appropriate nets
Rhode Island: Working on scheduling of appropriate nets
Northern Connecticut: 146.790-Vernon Repeater PL: 82.5 Hz – 830 PM and 1030 PM Saturday Evening, Sunday Morning schedule TBD

Pictures and videos of storm damage can be sent as a reply to this email, via the WX1BOX Facebook/Twitter feed or via the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter for the pictures/videos unless otherwise indicated. If time allows, a shortened coordination message will be posted with the latest Amateur Radio Net schedule for the region and any storm forecast updates. A coastal storm will bring the first significant snowfall to much of Southern New England. The headlines depict the current thinking along with remaining uncertainty over the rain-snow-mix line possibly being a bit south of the Boston to Providence corridor where Winter Storm Watches remain in effect while Northern Connecticut, Western, Central and interior Northeast Massachusetts including the North Shore are under Winter Storm Warnings. Key factors remain:

1.) The track of the storm as that will depict whether the rain-snow line is further offshore or moves inland into the I-95 corridor of Southeast New England. The trend on the rain-snow-mix line is more uncertain with some models shifting it further north while others keeping it closer to the coast.
2.) The intensity of the storm as that will depict the strength of the winds and whether higher snowfall amounts can be realized over a portion of Southern New England.
3.) The speed of the storm as it moves through the area.
