Flash Flood/Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – August 13th, 2013 Flash Flood/Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all..

..Thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and urban/poor drainage and small river/stream flooding potential are likely today region wide and Isolated Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with damaging winds are possible this afternoon and evening with the greatest threat for strong to severe thunderstorms across Connecticut, Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts though all areas should monitor this potential..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible to likely starting around Midday Tuesday into Tuesday Evening..

At 720 AM, Doppler Radar indicated rain spreading into portions of Connecticut with heavier rain and embedded thunderstorms over portions of Eastern New York. This activity will spread across Southern New England today. The greatest threat from this activity is heavy rainfall leading to urban/poor drainage and small/river stream flooding across areas that receive the heaviest rainfall. Heavy rainfall will not likely be as widespread as Friday but localized areas could have flooding issues particularly in urban and poor drainage areas and on flashier rivers and streams that respond quickly to short duration heavy rainfall.

While extensive cloud cover will likely limit any severe weather potential due to the lack of sunshine limiting instability values, the humid conditions coupled with strong wind shear profiles may allow for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms by midday into this evening across portions of Southern New England particularly in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts though all areas should monitor. Damaging Winds are the primary threat though there is even the possibility of an isolated weak tornado if a thunderstorm can become intense enough due to the strong wind shear profiles aloft but the main threat would be strong to damaging straightline winds.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible to likely starting around Midday today lasting into Tuesday Evening. This will be the only complete coordination message on today’s threat. A shortened coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops at NWS Taunton are initiated. Below are the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook and Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Day-1 Convective Outlook:

Flash Flood/Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Friday 8/9/13 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all..

..Heavy Rainfall and embedded thunderstorms likely across the region but particularly in Western New England today into tonight with the potential for flash flooding of urban/poor drainage areas and small river/streams. Isolated Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds is also possible across the region but particularly again in Western New England later this afternoon into early this evening..
..A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for Southern New Hampshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Northern Worcester, Northern and Central Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts from 8 AM through Friday Afternoon. The potential exists for rainfall of 1-3″ with isolated higher amounts of 4″ or more over portions of the Flash Flood Watch area..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence at 9 AM EDT to monitor for rainfall and flash flood reports and the isolated severe weather potential..

At 715 AM, Doppler Radar showed two areas of heavy rainfall, one over Northwest Massachusetts and Southern Vermont spreading into Southern New Hampshire. A second area of heavy rainfall extends into Southeast New York. These areas of heavy rain will have the potential to produce 1-3″ of rain with isolated amounts of 4″ or more across portions of Western New England. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect from 8 AM Friday Morning through Friday Afternoon for Southern New Hampshire and Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin, Northern Worcester and Northern and Central Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts. Heavy rainfall and embedded thunderstorms may also affect parts of the region east of the Flash Flood Watch area.

There is also the potential for isolated strong to severe thunderstorms across the region later this afternoon and evening with strong to damaging winds. The threat is region wide though the biggest threat for this activity is also in Western New England.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence at 9 AM EDT to monitor for rainfall and flash flood reports and the isolated severe weather potential. This will be the only coordination message issued on today’s weather. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday 8/8/13-Friday 8/9/13 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all..

..Thunderstorms with Heavy Rainfall and potential for urban and poor drainage flooding and the possibility of Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds and hail are possible today across Southwest New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut in the afternoon and evening hours..
..A similar potential exists for Friday across interior Western New England..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible today and Friday..

At 630 AM, Doppler Radar showed an area of showers moving through Eastern Massachusetts and should be offshore later this morning. Another area of showers and thunderstorms extends over Central New York and into Central Pennsylvania. Cloud cover is fairly extensive over the region and should be that way for most of the day. Nevertheless, thunderstorms with heavy rainfall and the potential of urban and poor drainage flooding along with isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds and hail are possible today across Southwest New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut as we get into the afternoon and evening hours. A similar potential exists for Friday and this is all ahead of a slow moving cold front that will push through the region later Friday Night into Saturday Morning.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible today and Friday. This will be the only complete coordination message on today’s threat. A shortened coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops at NWS Taunton are initiated. Additional coordination messages for Friday will likely follow tonight and Friday Morning. Severe Weather and Heat Coordination Message #3 – Saturday 7/20/13 Severe Weather & Heat Potential

Hello to all..

..One more day of intense heat and humidity with Heat Advisories posted for much of the region today..
..The heat will come to an end today as the potential exists for at least isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across much of the region today with damaging winds, large hail and urban/poor drainage flooding as the primary threats. A more widespread severe thunderstorm event remains possible but some uncertainty now in the most favorable location and the coverage of strong to severe thunderstorms today in Southern New England as remnant storm complexes bring some cloud cover and possibly showers to the region this morning as well as the timing of the cold front..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) maintains a Slight Risk for Severe Weather Across Much of Southern New England..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 1 PM today lasting through evening and we will monitor for an earlier start time if needed..

There will be one more day of heat today as the heat wave enters its last day. Today will not be as hot as Friday but will still likely have heat indices near or over 100 degrees with temperatures around or over 90 degrees. Heat Advisories have been posted for much of the region. See the following link for details on the heat:

http://kamala.cod.edu/ma/latest.wwus71.KBOX.html

As has been advertised for several days now, the heat will come to an end today as a cold front will make its way through the region bringing an end to the intense heat and humidity. With the cold front, will come the threat for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across much of the region today with damaging winds, large hail and urban/poor drainage flooding as the primary threats. There is a bit of uncertainty as to the primary locations and the extent of the strong to severe thunderstorm threat based on what occurred last night for strong to severe thunderstorms in New York and Northern New England. This has setup the following uncertainties:

1.) Cloud cover from remnant thunderstorm complexes moving in from New York State. Satellite imagery shows cloud cover moving in over portions of Western New England and Doppler radar is showing a weakening short line of thunderstorms in Eastern New York and scattered showers moving into Connecticut followed by a break in the cloud cover then thicker clouds associated with the cold front further west into Central New York State. It is unclear how much reduction of heating this will make for the region or whether activity may intensify as it reaches Eastern New England where more heating is occurring prior to the activity moving into the area. Also, latest Satellite trends have shown some thinning of the clouds over the past hour.

2.) The timing of the cold front and any air mass recovery needed based on cloud cover that moves through the region this morning.

Despite the uncertainties an isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorm threat still exists for today possibly occurring as early as late morning to midday and lasting through this evening and more widespread activity cannot be ruled out if enough heating occurs and depending on the timing and forcing of the cold front. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 1 PM today lasting through evening. An earlier start is possible if current shower and thunderstorm activity were to intensify as it moves into the region. This will likely be the last coordination message on Saturday’s Severe Weather Potential and the heat wave. Below is the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook and SPC Day-1 Convective Outlook:

Severe Weather and Heat Coordination Message #2 – Friday 7/19/13-Saturday 7/20/13 Severe Weather & Heat Potential

Hello to all..

..Intense Heat and Humidity will last through Saturday. Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are in effect today for much of Southern New England as today will likely be the hottest day of the heat wave with temperatures approaching or exceeding 100 degrees for air temperatures without the heat index likely in some areas and heat indicies approaching 110 degrees. Heat Advisories and possibly Excessive Heat Warnings could be extended into Saturday as the heat wave continues through Saturday..
..For Friday, widespread severe weather is expected to remain north and west of Southern New England but Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms are possible similar to Thursday in portions of interior Southern New England particularly northern and western areas. Damaging winds, large hail and urban and poor drainage flooding are the main threats..
..As we get into Saturday, intense heat and humidity will then be followed by a cold front with scattered to numerous strong to severe thunderstorms on Saturday with damaging winds, large hail and urban and poor drainage flooding as the primary threats. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) continues a Slight Risk for Severe Weather has been issued for Saturday for much of the region and Southern New England has been in a severe weather outlook for Saturday from SPC going back to their Day-7 Outlook..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible Friday. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely Saturday Afternoon and Evening..

The intense heat and humidity will continue through Saturday across much of Southern New England as the heat wave continues. Excessive Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories are in effect for much of Southern New England today as today will likely be the hottest day of the heat wave with temperatures approaching or exceeding 100 degrees for air temperatures without the heat index likely in some areas and heat indicies approaching 110 degrees. Heat Advisories and possibly Excessive Heat Warnings could be extended into Saturday as the heat wave continues through Saturday. Details on Heat Advisories/Excessive Heat Warnings can be seen via the following link:

http://kamala.cod.edu/ma/latest.wwus71.KBOX.html

For Friday, an isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorm threat cannot be ruled out but current expectations are for the more widespread severe weather threat to remain north and west of Southern New England. On Thursday Evening, much of Northern Vermont, North-Central New Hampshire and Southern Maine were affected by isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms and flash flooding and a couple strong to severe thunderstorms grazed parts of Southern New Hampshire and Western Massachusetts late Thursday Afternoon and Evening. For today, the situation looks similar with widespread severe weather remaining north of the area but an isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorm could occur in interior locations particularly in northern and western parts of the area. Damaging winds, large hail, and urban/poor drainage flooding would be the main threats. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible today if thunderstorms develop near or in our region.

As we get into Saturday, the heat wave will end as a strong cold front is expected to make its way into Southern New England. Models have been insistent out as far as 7 days that scattered to numerous strong to severe thunderstorms will organize in a line or several line configurations with the potential for damaging winds, large hail and urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats. Specific details and timing have yet to be worked out and there are some slight questions on cloud debris from prior thunderstorm complexes and timing of the cold front that could potentially limit the coverage of severe weather but confidence is fairly high on at least some severe weather activity particularly in interior Southern New England. SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely Saturday Afternoon and Evening.

Unless the potential changes for more widespread severe weather Friday, the next coordination message on the Saturday Severe Weather Potential will be posted Friday Evening. Below are the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook and SPC Day-1, Day-2 Severe Weather Outlooks:

Severe Weather and Heat Coordination Message #1 – Thursday 7/18/13-Saturday 7/20/13 Severe Weather & Heat Potential

Hello to all..

..Intense Heat and Humidity will last through Saturday. Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisories are in effect today for much of Southern New England and will likely be reissued Friday and possibly Saturday as the heat wave continues..
..As we get into Saturday, intense heat and humidity will then be followed by a cold front with scattered to numerous strong to severe thunderstorms on Saturday with damaging winds, large hail and urban and poor drainage flooding as the primary threats as a rare Slight Risk for Severe Weather has been issued for Saturday for all of Southern New England in the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) Day-3 Outlook and Southern New England has been in a severe weather outlook for Saturday from SPC going back to their Day-7 Outlook..
..Thursday and Friday could see an isolated to scattered strong or severe thunderstorm threat but current expectations are that the chances of a more widespread severe weather event will stay north and west of Southern New England during this period though this will be monitored..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are likely Saturday Afternoon and Evening..
