Storm Coordination Message #3 – Monday 1/15/18 – Localized Snow/Icing Event for Parts of Eastern Massachusetts & Tuesday PM 1/16/18-Wednesday PM 1/17/18 Moderate Winter Storm Potential

..Advisory level icing and light snow are occurring across East and South Coastal Massachusetts and into parts of interior Plymouth and Eastern Norfolk County Massachusetts. A more widespread moderate snowstorm is still expected in Southern New England Tuesday Night into Wednesday Afternoon..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 10 PM Monday Evening for Eastern Norfolk and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for a coating to 2″ of snow and a light glaze of ice with a Special Weather Statement for light icing conditions across other parts of South Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod..
..A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Tuesday Afternoon to Wednesday Afternoon for Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Worcester, Middlesex and Essex Counties of Massachusetts and has been expanded to Northern Connecticut, Northwest Rhode Island and Suffolk and Norfolk Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8″ of snow. Areas outside of the Winter Storm Watch area may see advisory level snowfall but there is also the question of mixed precipitation or rain particularly along east and south coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Cape Cod and the Islands south of the Winter Storm Watch area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports and icing conditions across the Winter Weather Advisory area on Monday and for the moderate snowfall potential across the region Tuesday Night into Wednesday Afternoon..

Ocean effect snow has caused some snowfall accumulations of mostly a dusting to 1″ but an areas across Northern Essex County from Rockport to Essex to Manchester to Gloucester Mass has had 1-3″ of snow. The latest snowfall totals can be seen at the following link:

As the precipitation bands moved further south, light freezing rain and freezing drizzle have caused icy travel conditions in the Winter Weather Advisory area with Winter Weather Advisories expanded into Southern Plymouth County Massachusetts and a Special Weather Statement being issued for Southern Bristol County Massachusetts and Cape Cod for light icing. The freezing rain/freezing drizzle should end later tonight.

Another coastal storm system will approach Southern New England late Tuesday into Wednesday Afternoon bringing a moderate plowable snowfall to much of interior and Northeast Coastal Massachusetts. The latest model data indicate a greater threat for a moderate snowfall across Northern Connecticut, Northwest Rhode Island and Norfolk and Suffolk Counties of Massachusetts where Winter Storm Watches have expanded for this area with a 4-8″ snowfall possible across the Winter Storm Watch area. Across the remainder Rhode Island and Southeast Massachusetts, advisory level snowfall is possible but there are also concerns about mixed precipitation in this area. The current snowfall amounts expected for this timeframe and mixed precipitation potential will become further defined in future forecasts.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports and icing conditions across the Winter Weather Advisory area on Monday Evening and across the region Tuesday Night into Wednesday Afternoon.
