..A cold front will approach Southern New England Wednesday Afternoon and Evening setting the stage for Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy rainfall leading to urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats. The threat maybe more isolated than what was being seen in models yesterday but marginal risk for severe weather has been maintained for the region..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed all of Southern New England in a marginal risk for severe weather so this means an expansion through Southeast Coastal New England. Timeframe for severe weather is between 2-10 PM ET Wednesday..
..A Heat Advisory is in effect through 8 PM Wednesday for all of Southern New England except for the east slopes of the Berkshires, Cape Cod and the Islands with heat indices up to 101 degrees. Use caution in working outdoors, take frequent breaks, spend time in cooler areas and stay hydrated..
..Heavy rainfall including from thunderstorms is possible Thursday into early Friday potentially resulting in flooding issues as the cold front stalls over Southern New England before moving south of the region Friday bringing pleasant weekend weather. One more day of heat and humidity before a cold front moves into the area Wednesday Afternoon and Evening and stall over Southern New England Friday then shifts south of the area during the day Friday. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The timing of the cold front into the area near the time of peak heating to take advantage of strong wind shear profiles.
2.) Frontal forcing, instability and wind shear to offset some unfavorable severe weather parameters.
3.) Mid-level drying during the day Wednesday if that occurs and whether moisture returns in the mid-levels during the time of peak heating.
4.) Cooling temperatures aloft and how this could offset unfavorable severe weather parameters particularly the mid-level drying
5.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. They will be isolated to scattered with pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.

..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has expanded the slight risk area to cover much of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island away from the Southeast Coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island where there remains a marginal risk for severe weather. Timeframe for severe weather is between 1-10 PM ET Friday..

..The morning round of potential thunderstorms for Southeast New England has tracked further south with only showers and an isolated thunderstorm expected over Cape Cod and the Islands this morning. There will then be a period of dry weather followed by the potential for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms Sunday Afternoon and Evening between 2-10 PM with strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning and heavy downpours leading to urban and poor drainage flooding as the main threats..
..The Storm Prediction Center has maintained Southern New England in a Slight Risk for Severe Weather except for Cape Cod and the Islands which is in a marginal risk for severe weather for Sunday Afternoon and Evening..

Sunday has potential to be a fairly active day in Southern New England with a brief period of heat and humidity. Morning thunderstorm activity with localized flood potential is tracking south and east of Southeast New England though showers and an isolated thunderstorm could occur through midday today particularly over the islands and possibly Cape Cod. As this area departs, there will be a period of dry weather with heating and destabilization that sets the stage for isolated to scattered severe thunderstorm development. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) The track of morning thunderstorms Sunday Morning with flood potential for Southeast New England is further south than modeled yesterday morning so while there will be some showers and an isolated thunderstorm, this should move out by midday. Satellite pictures show breaks in cloud cover especially across Northern Massachusetts and further breaks back into New York State that should allow for heating and destabilization for much of the region which will be monitored closely.
2.) Timing of the cold front to take advantage of favorable instability and shear profiles to offset a few negative parameters on severe weather potential. Current timing would be prime for development of strong to severe thunderstorms Sunday Afternoon and Evening if expected heating and destabilization occurs.
3.) As always with severe/non-severe thunderstorm events, not all locations will receive a severe/non-severe thunderstorm. They will be isolated to scattered with pockets of wind damage, hail and urban/poor drainage flooding in those isolated to scattered locations.

..Isolated to Scattered Strong to Severe Thunderstorms are possible across Western Massachusetts and much of Connecticut later this Thursday Afternoon and Evening after 4 PM as a cold front will bring the end to the heat and humidity in Southern New England. Strong to damaging winds, hail, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall with urban and poor drainage flooding are the main threats but can’t rule out an isolated tornado if some unfavorable convective parameters for the region are overcome..
..The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed Western and Central Massachusetts and much of Connecticut in a marginal risk for severe weather for Thursday Afternoon and Evening with a slight risk up across portions of Western Maine, Northern New Hampshire and Northern Vermont..

Our final day of heat and humidity occurs today as a cold front will bring cooler and less humid conditions Friday into Saturday. It will set the stage for isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorms ahead of the cold front Thursday Afternoon and Evening. The headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) There is favorable shear and satellite imagery shows sufficient clearing for destabilization in the region for later today. Timing of the cold front and forcing with this front seems to be best in Northern New England but we will need to monitor if there is enough forcing to take advantage of favorable shear and instability parameters in the marginal risk area.
2.) There are some limiting severe weather parameters but if they are overcome or better than expected, that could increase the risk for severe weather potential.
3.) Coverage of severe thunderstorms will most likely be isolated to scattered but if items 1 and 2 line up accordingly, it could allow for the severe thunderstorms to be a bit more widespread.

..Heavy Rainfall training over the same area brought a widespread swath of 3-7″ of rainfall across a strip of Norfolk and Northern Plymouth County Massachusetts Thursday Morning into early afternoon. This caused significant flooding including the shutdown of Interstate-93 in the Milton/Quincy/Braintree area. Reliable spotter reports from Amateur Radio, non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters including some embedded in emergency management helped to detail the flooding and rain gauge reports..
