A coastal winter storm that has been modeled for several days remains likely for Southern New England. Light snow has started across portions of Connecticut.

Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for Southern New Hampshire, all of interior Massachusetts including the Metro Boston area and Northeast Coastal Massachusetts through Norfolk County Massachusetts as well as Northern Connecticut, and Northwest Providence Counties of Rhode Island. Total snowfall of 6-12″ are likely with isolated higher amounts of up to 14 inches in Northwest Massachusetts and Southwest New Hampshire. Portions of Massachusetts may also see a trace to one-tenth inch of ice accumulation as well.

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 AM Sunday Morning for Southeast Providence, Kent and Washington Counties of Rhode Island and Northern Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow, a trace of ice and wind gusts up to 40 MPH. This replaces the Winter Storm Watch for this region.

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 AM Sunday Morning for Newport County RI, and South Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod for 2-5″ of snow for much of the advisory area and a trace of ice with sustained winds of 20-30 MPH and gusts to 50 MPH likely. Isolated higher amounts are possible west of the Cape Cod Canal with amounts closer to 2 inches over the Outer Cape, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island. There remains some uncertainty in exact snow and ice amounts particularly along and south of the Mass. Pike to the Cape Cod Canal and this will be dependent on the timing of the precipitation type changeover. If the storm tracks a bit closer to the coast, it will allow for mixed precipitation further inland. A track slightly more offshore would allow for more snow to occur in areas that are currently expected to get some mixed precipitation. It is noted the air remains very cold over the area with strong high pressure to the north of New England. Precipitation type changeover reports in addition to snow and ice total reports, wind measurement and wind damage reports will be critical during this storm.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for East Coastal Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands from 8-12 AM Sunday. Minor coastal flooding could occur at the time of the Sunday Morning high tide resulting in lane or road closures along most exposed north and east facing beaches in this area.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton is currently expected to start at 600 PM Saturday Evening. It is noted that the heaviest snowfall and strongest winds are expected during overnight hours so Ops during overnight hours at some level appear likely. There has been some question as far as the intensity of the storm system and precipitation type but heavy amounts of precipitation are likely. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Southern New Hampshire, all of interior Massachusetts including the Metro Boston area and Northeast Coastal Massachusetts, Northern Connecticut, and Providence and Western Kent Counties of Rhode Island. The initial preliminary totals is for 6-12″ of snow over the Winter Storm Watch area followed by a changeover to sleet and freezing rain producing a trace to a tenth inch of ice accumulation. Areas south and east of the Winter Storm Watch area are likely to see a period of snow and ice with 2-6″ of snow accumulation and a trace of ice before a changeover to rain from just south and east of the Winter Storm Watch area to the Cape Cod Canal with 1-2″ of snow across Cape Cod and the Islands before a changeover to rain. There remains uncertainty as far as exact snow and ice totals across the region. Models had trended colder with this storm for a time but are now implying more mixed precipitation particularly in Southeastern New England though this could extend further north and west. Future model runs should better delineate the rain/snow/ice line across the region.

Overnight tonight through midday Monday, a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain could cause slick travel conditions across much of interior Southern New England. There will be a brief period of snow and ice at the coast but that should quickly change over to rain so no Winter Weather Advisories are posted in this area. Across interior locations, much of interior Southeast Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North-Central and Northeast Connecticut should see a changeover to rain by around midday hence Winter Weather Advisories are in effect through 100 PM Monday. Across parts of Southern New Hampshire, Northern and Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut, it is possible precipitation will remain snow and ice or only have a brief changeover to rain so advisories in this area are through 10 PM Monday Evening. Despite the storm being less than 24 hours away, there is greater uncertainty in this storm forecast and the areas of uncertainty include the timeframes of changeover of precipitation from snow to ice to rain, precipitation amounts of snow, ice and rain given the uncertainty of the timing of the changeover in precipitation types and how heavy the precipitation will be as current radar as of 700 PM shows the heavier precipitation sliding south of the area but steady precipitation should eventually build over Southern New England during the overnight hours.

..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 6 PM Friday Evening to 6 AM Saturday Morning for Franklin, Hampshire, Western Hampden, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties for 2-4 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts of 5-6 inches in higher terrain locations in the east slopes of the Berkshires with a trace of ice possible. Precipitation will start as rain, mix with sleet/freezing rain before changing over to snow. Locations along and south of the Mass. Pike should see a Dusting to perhaps as much as 1-2 inches particularly locations closest to the Mass Pike..

The National Weather Service in Taunton Amateur Radio Station, WX1BOX, will once again be active for SKYWARN Recognition Day 2013. In addition, for the seventh straight year, the National Weather Service Gray, Maine Office will also be active under call-sign, WX1GYX. The Boston Amateur Radio Club will also be active as they have been over the past several years at the NWS Blue Hill Observatory under call-sign W1BOS from 9 AM-3 PM Saturday December 7th, 2013.

This will be the 15th year of SKYWARN Recognition Day and its anticipated that over 100 NWS Forecast Offices will be participating once again this year. A Web link to information on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be seen at the following link:

The following is a schedule of repeaters that will be utilized along with simplex being utilized during certain timeframes on Saturday at WX1BOX. We hope Amateurs will utilize this schedule and try and work WX1BOX during these various timeframes. If you don’t hear NWS, feel free to call for WX1BOX and if the office is monitoring, a response will be given. When you make contact, give your current sky condition and temperature as required. Below is the tentative schedule of operations:

There have been questions on whether we will utilize HF during SKYWARN Recognition Day. We will be utilizing HF. It is hard to know what bands and frequencies will be utilizing as it will depend on propagation and the amount of stations that we are working on various HF bands as well as operator availability at WX1BOX. A rough guideline is that we will likely be on 40 or 75 Meters during Friday Evening and on 20 Meters during much of the daytime hours Saturday switching to 40 or 75 meters towards evening. We will be sending out Tweets and Facebook status updates on what frequencies will be operating on via HF.

We will also be utilizing 6-Meters FM for the first time during SRD since we now have that functionality in working order at NWS Taunton. The setup is a Vertical Antenna through an Icom IC-706 Radio. The following repeaters and simplex will be utilized during SRD on 6-Meters. This schedule may change as we get closer to the SRD event and 6-Meter use during SRD may expand depending on operator availability etc.

There will be other conference systems utilized for SKYWARN Recognition Day. They are as follows:

The New England Reflector Gateway System will be utilized by the NWS Taunton, Mass. and NWS Gray, Maine offices from 0000-0500 UTC and 1200-2400 UTC. The New England Gateway system is on EchoLink Conference server *NEW-ENG* Node: 9123, IRLP reflector 9123. If other NWS offices would like to join the system, they are welcome to do so and participants in SKYWARN Recognition Day can also use that system to make contact with various NWS offices. This is a great place to move off the *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system after your scheduled time if other Amateurs or NWS offices whish to make contact with you.

Also, the Western Reflector will be having NWS offices calling CQ as in past years and have multiple reflector channels and Echolink conferences available. There is reflector 9250/Echolink Conference *HI-GATE* node: 357564, IRLP 9251 and the *WORLD* Echolink Conference node: 479886, IRLP 9257/*DCF-ARC* Echolink Conference node: 336037 and IRLP 9258/EchoLink Conference *NV-GATE* Node: 152566 open for NWS offices. Please contact Kent-W7AOR for additional information on the Western Reflector.

A few technical reminders for folks interested in making contacts with the NWS Forecast Offices on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 and New England Reflector Gateway IRLP 9123/*NEW-ENG* Echolink Node: 9123 systems:

-The system allows both EchoLink and IRLP connections. For EchoLink users, you connect to the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203 conference system. For IRLP users, you would connect to IRLP reflector 9219.

-If you are using EchoLink, the RF node or PC that you’re using must have EchoLink conferencing disabled. If it is not disabled, the system will automatically kick the node or PC off of the system. The reason this occurs is to prevent unintentional interference from a conferencing station that may not know the node is connected somewhere else. This will keep traffic moving on the net and reduce interference considerably.
