Storm Coordination Message #2 -Thursday 10/27-Friday 10/28/11 Potential Storm Event

Hello to all..

..Storm System will affect Southern New England Thursday Morning through Friday Morning with a decent rainfall, potential for some snowfall accumulations in Northwest Massachusetts and Southwest New Hampshire and perhaps even some snowflakes seen over much of Southern New England before precipitation ends along with the threat for Minor Coastal Flooding at the Thursday Midday high tide..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 9 AM to 2 PM EDT Thursday for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands..
..Snowfall in Northwest Massachusetts is currently expected to be 1-3″ of heavy and wet snow but will be contingent on the timing of the changeover in precipitation from rain to snow and the amount of precipitation that falls as snow. If amounts reach 2-3″ or higher, isolated pockets of tree and wire damage will be possible. This is particularly true in the higher elevations..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible for the Thursday high tide cycle and then for snowfall late Thursday Afternoon through early Friday Morning..

A storm system will affect the region Thursday Morning into Friday Morning. Precipitation will start as rain and could be heavy at times. About 1 to 1.5″ of rainfall with isolated higher amounts is possible.

As we get into Thursday Evening, possibly as early as the evening rush hour in Southern New Hampshire and Northwest Massachusetts, rain could change to a heavy wet snow. At this time, 1-3″ of snow is expected. With trees having foiliage on them in some areas and the weight of the heavy wet snow, there is potential for isolated pockets of tree and wire damage. This is particularly true in the higher elevations. This potential would rise significantly if more of the precipitation falls as that heavy, wet snow and that will need close monitoring. The current scenario, however, is for 1-3″ of heavy and wet snow. Wet snowflakes may be seen all the way through Southeast Massachusetts and Rhode Island before the rain ends late Thursday Night but this will again depend on how much cold air seeps into the region. No accumulation is expected outside of Southwest New Hampshire and Northwest Massachusetts.

The other potential threat from the storm system is minor coastal flooding at the time of the midday Thursday high tide. A significant storm surge is not expected but with high astronomical tides and the onshore Northeast flow, minor coastal flooding will be possible with the impact to shore roads along the east coast of Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands. A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect from 9 AM to 2 PM Thursday to cover this potential for minor coastal flooding midday Thursday.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible Thursday for the coastal flood potential and rain changing over to snow late Thursday Afternoon through early Friday Morning. Another coordination message will be posted by 9 AM Thursday Morning. Below is the NWS Taunton Coastal Flood Advisory Statement and Hazardous Weather Outlook:

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Thursday 10/27-Friday 10/28/11 Potential Storm Event

Hello to all..

..Storm System slated to move into Southern New England Thursday will have the potential to produce minor coastal flooding over successive high tide cycles Thursday into Friday Afternoon over East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and the Islands and the potential for the first accumulating snowfall over Northwest Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire late Thursday and Thursday Night particularly in the higher elevations. That snowfall may be heavy and wet and depending on accumulations and amount of foilage on trees could result in isolated pockets of tree and wire damage..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible Thursday and possibly around the high tide cycles on Friday. A more detailed coordination message will follow late Wednesday Evening. Below is the NWS Taunton Hazardous Weather Outlook..

Storm/Severe Weather Coordination Message #2 – Friday October 14th, 2011 Severe Weather Potential

Hello to all..

..Period of Heavy rainfall and potential urban/poor drainage flooding with the chance for an isolated to scatterd strong to severe thunderstorm with strong to damaging winds especially this Friday Afternoon and Evening..
..SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton possible Friday Afternoon and Evening..

At 750 AM Doppler Radar, showed scattered showers and a couple heavier downpours with the most coverage of showers over West-Central Connecticut and extreme Western Massachusetts and other scattered showers with a heavier downpour or two over South-Central and Eastern Massachusetts and North-Central Rhode Island. Radar shows a break in the precipitation with an area of rainfall a few hundred miles offshore that will likely move into Southern New England towards midday and early afternoon lasting into the evening. It is that area of rain that could produce more widespread heavier downpours capable of urban and poor drainage flooding with the possibility of an isolated to scattered strong to severe thunderstorm capable of strong to damaging winds. For the morning, activity will be in the form of scattered light to moderate rain showers with a heavier downpour or two possible.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton are possible this Friday Afternoon and Evening. This will be the last complete coordination message on today’s event. A shortened coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops at NWS Taunton are initiated. Post-North Shore Massachusetts Flash Flood Event Coordination Message #1

Hello to all…

..Unexpected Significant Flash Flood Event Hammered the North Shore of Massachusetts Tuesday Morning closing schools and resulting in a state of emergency in the city of Peabody, Massachusetts. Swampscott, Salem, Lynn, Marblehead and Beverly Massachusetts also sustained significant flash flooding..
..Rainfall amounts between 2 and 6 inches occurred in the hardest hit areas of the North Shore. Much of which falling in a 2 hour period near morning rush hour. Isolated hail and even one wind damage report was noted with the activity..
..SKYWARN Self-Activated in the 145.470-Danvers Repeater and on the New England Reflector *NEW-ENG* echolink conference node: 9123/IRLP 9123 system and gathered many reports during the event. The short fused nature and time of day the incident occurred precluded an email coordination message to the SKYWARN email list..
..Below is a note sent by Eastern Massachusetts Assistant ARES Section Emergency Coordinator and North Shore Assistant SKYWARN Coordiantor, Jim Palmer-KB1KQW to North Shore ARES/SKYWARN volunteers edited for the generality of the NWS Taunton SKYWARN email list..

We wanted to take a moment to thank all those ARES/SKYWARN stations that checked into the net this morning to provide reports of flooding, rainfall totals, even hail and wind damage. While this event was certainly not expected, we reacted as quickly as possible and provided valuable reports to the National Weather Service in Taunton to verify their warnings on the ground. Late this morning, we received a note from one of the meteorologists at NWS-Taunton also thanking us for our quick reaction and numerous reports. Severe Weather Coordination Message #1 – Thursday 9/29/11 Severe Weather and Flood Potential

Hello to all..

..Isolated strong to possibly even severe thunderstorms are possible late this afternoon and evening as an upper level low pressure system slowly makes its way through the region over the next several days. Damaging Winds would be the primary threat. Also, areas of heavy rainfall and any embedded thunderstorms may also cause urban/poor drainage flooding over the area..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will likely be utilized to cover these possible threats today. Ops at NWS Taunton are possible if coverage of heavy rainfall or strong thunderstorms is greater than anticipated..

At 745 AM, Doppler radar showed an area of heavy rainfall and embedded thunderstorms straddling the New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut border. This area is moving north-northeast and appears as though it will stay west of the NWS Taunton County Warning area or scrape the east slopes of the Berkshires west of the Connecticut River Valley. Other areas of heavy rain and embedded thunderstorms are likely to pivot around the upper level low pressure system today and tonight. This may result in urban and poor drainage flooding with the issuance of urban and small stream flood advisories. Overnight, a number areas have received .50-1.50″ of rain with isolated higher amounts over interior Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Southern New Hampshire.

Shear aloft will increase by late afternoon and early evening. At this time, little breaks in the cloud cover are expected but if a few breaks in the clouds were to occur or simply the combination of the cold pool aloft with strong shear may compensate for the lack of heating and result in isolated strong to possibly even severe thunderstorms with damaging winds and urban/poor drainage flooding as the primary threats. This will be monitored throughout the day. A low probability threat area with ‘see text’ has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for much of Western and Central Massachusetts Connecticut and Western Rhode Island and NWS Taunton is in agreement.

It is noted that there could be minor splashover for East Coastal areas of Massachusetts due to onshore flow and high astronomoical tides. No major issues are expected, however.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will likely be utilized to cover these possible threats today. Ops at NWS Taunton are possible if coverage of heavy rainfall and urban/poor drainage flooding or isolated strong to severe thunderstorms is greater than anticipated. Another coordination message will be issued if time allows and Ops are initiated or self-activation of SKYWARN over a large area occurs.
