Storm and Extreme Cold Coordination Message #2 – Friday Night Cape & Islands Snow Potential and Weekend Extreme Cold And Strong Wind Potential

Hello to all..

..Extreme Cold Conditions will affect Southern New England over the course of this weekend with dangerous and life-threatening cold wind chills and dangerously cold ambient air temperatures. Temperatures will moderate over the course of the day Monday. Strong Winds also likely for a portion of this weekend with a light snow event Friday Night over Cape Cod and the Islands..
..A Wind Chill Warning is now in effect from 4 PM Saturday until Noon Sunday for the entire NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for the South Coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island and Cape Cod and the Islands. Wind Chills could dip as low as 20 to 30 below zero with isolated interior locations hitting 35 below zero. Ambient air temperatures will be 5 below to 5 above zero at the coast and 5 below zero to 15 below zero in the interior. Winds will be sustained at 15-25 MPH with gusts up to 45 MPH range with isolated higher gusts possible at the coast. This is life-threatening cold that can bring frostbite exposure with just 10 minutes of exposure to the cold..
..A Wind Chill Watch remains in effect from Saturday Afternoon through Sunday Afternoon for the south coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Barnstable County Massachusetts for wind chills as low as 25 below zero and ambient temperatures of 5 below to 5 above zero with sustained winds of 15-30 MPH with gusts in the 45-50 MPH range..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 PM Friday Evening to 9 AM Saturday Morning for Nantucket for 2-4″ of snow. Across Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, 1-3″ of snow is expected. This will result in snow covered roads with very cold temperatures. Snowfall is expected to stay slightly below Winter Weather Advisory Levels on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard at this time..
..A Wind Advisory is in effect from 11 AM Saturday to 4 AM Sunday for Cape Cod and Nantucket Island for sustained winds of 20-30 MPH with gusts up to 50 MPH likely. These strong winds may cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages. The Wind Advisory could be expanded to other parts of the NWS Taunton coverage area in future forecasts..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the possibility of snow over the Cape and Islands Friday Night into early Saturday Morning and for strong winds during the day Saturday into early Sunday Morning..

In addition to the extreme cold conditions expected this weekend, a round of accumulating snow is possible over Cape Cod and the Islands for Friday Night into early Saturday Morning as a coastal storm tracks well offshore but throws back some light to possibly moderate snow over the Cape and the Islands. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Nantucket from 7 PM Friday Evening until 9 AM Saturday Morning for 2-4″ of snow while over Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, 1-3″ of snow is likely which is just below advisory criteria. With cold temperatures, roads are expected to be snow covered in these areas.
