**The following is an updated announcement on SKYWARN Recognition Day 2018. There have been updates to our 2m/440 MHz repeater schedule, update to the NWS offices on the VOIP system and updated DMR and DSAR info.**

The following is a special announcement on SKYWARN Recognition Day 2018. This announcement will be updated either Thursday Evening 11/29/18 or Friday Morning 11/30/18.

Announcement text is listed below:

The National Weather Service in Boston/Norton Amateur Radio Station, WX1BOX, will once again be active for SKYWARN Recognition Day 2018. In addition, for the twelfth straight year, the National Weather Service Gray, Maine Office will also be active under call-sign, WX1GYX. The Boston Amateur Radio Club will also be active as they have been over the past several years at the Blue Hill Observatory under call-sign WX1BHO from 9 AM-3 PM Saturday December 1st, 2018.

This will be the 20th year of SKYWARN Recognition Day and its anticipated that 80-100 NWS Forecast Offices will be participating once again this year. A Web link to information on SKYWARN Recognition Day can be seen at the following link:

WX1BOX will be monitoring the *NEW-ENG3* conference node 9123/IRLP 9123 system throughout the SRD event from 7 PM-12 AM Friday Evening 11/30/18 and from 7 AM-7 PM Saturday 12/1/18. Our HF station will be active on the various HF bands during the same time period. What bands/modes we operate on will be dependent on propagation and operator availability. We will attempt to announce the different HF frequencies will be on via our Facebook and Twitter feeds as well as on the DX Spotter/cluster system dxsummit.fi for people that wish to contact us on HF.

The following is a schedule of repeaters that will be utilized along with simplex being utilized during certain timeframes on Friday Evening 7 PM-12 AM and Saturday 7 AM-7 PM at WX1BOX. We hope Amateurs will utilize this schedule and try and work WX1BOX during these various timeframes. If you don’t hear NWS, feel free to call for WX1BOX and if the office is monitoring, a response will be given. When you make contact, give your current sky condition and temperature as required. There will be other conference systems utilized for SKYWARN Recognition Day. They are as follows:

The New England Reflector Gateway System will be utilized by the NWS Boston/Norton, Mass. and NWS Gray, Maine offices from 0000-0500 UTC and 1200-2400 UTC. The New England Gateway system is on EchoLink Conference server *NEW-ENG3* Node: 9123, IRLP reflector 9123. If other NWS offices would like to join the system, they are welcome to do so and participants in SKYWARN Recognition Day can also use that system to make contact with various NWS offices. This is a great place to move off the *WX_TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 system after your scheduled time if other Amateurs or NWS offices whish to make contact with you.

Also, the Western Reflector will be having NWS offices calling CQ as in past years and have multiple reflector channels and Echolink conferences available. There is reflector 9250/Echolink Conference *HI-GATE* node: 357564, IRLP 9251 and the *WORLD* Echolink Conference node: 479886, IRLP 9257/*DCF-ARC* Echolink Conference node: 336037 and IRLP 9258/EchoLink Conference *NV-GATE* Node: 152566 open for NWS offices. Please contact Kent-W7AOR for additional information on the Western Reflector.

A few technical reminders for folks interested in making contacts with the NWS Forecast Offices on the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203/IRLP 9219 and New England Reflector Gateway IRLP 9123/*NEW-ENG3* Echolink Node: 9123 systems:

-The system allows both EchoLink and IRLP connections. For EchoLink users, you connect to the *WX-TALK* Node: 7203 conference system. For IRLP users, you would connect to IRLP reflector 9219.

-If you are using EchoLink, the RF node or PC that you’re using must have EchoLink conferencing disabled. If it is not disabled, the system will automatically kick the node or PC off of the system. The reason this occurs is to prevent unintentional interference from a conferencing station that may not know the node is connected somewhere else. This will keep traffic moving on the net and reduce interference considerably.

..Yet another strong storm system to bring another soaking rainfall with urban and poor drainage flooding possible, strong to damaging winds, minor coastal flooding and even some snow and ice to extreme Northwest Massachusetts..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from 9 PM Monday Evening through 5 AM Tuesday Morning for Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 25 to 35 MPH with gusts to 60 MPH. A Wind Advisory is now in effect for Eastern Essex, Suffolk, Southeast Middlesex and Eastern Norfolk Counties of Massachusetts from 8 PM Monday Evening through 6 AM Tuesday Morning for sustained winds of 15 to 25 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH with isolated higher gusts in the Blue Hill area of Eastern Norfolk County. A Wind Advisory is now in effect from 8 PM Monday Evening to 4 AM Tuesday Morning for South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island including Block Island Rhode Island for sustained winds of 15-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. These winds will have the potential to cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Coastal Flood Advisory is now in effect for East Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod and Nantucket Island through 5 AM Tuesday Morning for the overnight high tide cycle. Coastal flooding will likely be largely minor with the most vulnerable shore roads flooded during high tide both at midday and overnight..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Western Franklin County Massachusetts from 8 PM Monday Evening through 10 AM Tuesday Morning for 1-5″ of snow and a trace to one-tenth of an inch of ice particularly at elevations around or above 1500 feet with wind gusts up to 35 MPH. Other higher terrain areas of Western Massachusetts are expected to be below Winter Weather Advisory levels but this will be monitored closely..

Another strong storm system is expected to affect the region tonight into Tuesday Morning. The headlines depict the latest on the storm potential with some adjustments to the High Wind Watch area being converted to a High Wind Warning and Wind Advisories being posted in Northeast Coastal Massachusetts through Southeast Middlesex and Eastern Norfolk Counties. Winds with this storm system have the potential to be stronger than the last storm system but damage potential should be more limited owing to no leaves on the trees. Another 1-1.5 inches of rain for the area will add to already soaked grounds and may result in urban and poor drainage flooding. The lowest confidence portion of the forecast remains any snow potential in Northwest Massachusetts as just a degree or two in temperature and slightly different timing in the changeover in precipitation will result in significant changes in snow totals in this area.

A storm system remains on track to affect Southern New England tonight through early Sunday Evening. The headlines depict the current thinking on storm impacts. A Special Weather Statement has been issued to highlight the potential for patchy icing this evening in Western and North-Central Massachusetts and after Midnight in interior Northeast Massachusetts. Current model projections keep the wind gusts in current ranges across the Wind Advisory area and coastal areas outside of the Wind Advisory area with the potential for minor coastal flooding during the Sunday midday high tide.

A storm system will affect Southern New England tonight through early Sunday Evening. The headlines depict the current thinking on storm impacts. There are few key factors that will bear watching with this storm system and they are as follows:

1.) There could be a period of freezing rain in Northwest and North-Central Massachusetts. Just a small amount of freezing rain can result in higher impacts with respect to travel conditions. Also, the recent extreme cold conditions may allow for the rain to freeze on contact even with temperatures slightly above freezing given the extreme cold of the past few days and the fact the precipitation will fall during the evening.
2.) The storm system has been trending a bit stronger in recent runs and this could affect wind and coastal flood potential as well as the extent and locations of the heaviest rainfall. This will bear watching as we approach the storm event.

While the greatest risk for snow squalls is in Northern New England, there is a risk for these snow squalls in Southern New England with the greatest risk in Western and Northern Massachusetts nearest the more favorable environment in Northern New England though any localized area in Southern New England may see a snow squall..
..A Wind Chill Advisory is now in effect from 4-10 AM Thanksgiving Morning for Western Franklin, Western Hampshire and Western Hampden counties for wind chills as low as 15 below zero. Areas out side of the Wind Chill Advisory could see wind chills 5 above to 10 below zero overnight Wednesday into Thanksgiving morning and early afternoon making for bitterly cold conditions particularly for this time of year. Anyone doing outdoor activities Wednesday Night and Thursday should dress warmly and in layers over this timeframe..
..Winds are expected to stay below wind advisory criteria but are expected to gust in the 35-45 MPH range causing bitter cold wind chills. A pocket or two of isolated tree and wire damage may occur with these winds..
..Additional Snow squalls in the form of ocean effect are possible in the Outer Cape as very cold winds over warm ocean waters provide some enhancement tonight and Thanksgiving Day. This is expected to result right now in a coating-1 inch of snow but will be monitored in future updates..

As we approach Wednesday and into Thanksgiving, bitterly cold temperatures will grip the region with strong winds and the possibility of snow squalls in localized areas Wednesday Afternoon and Evening..
..A Winter Weather Advisory from 10 PM Monday Night through 5 PM Tuesday Evening for Franklin, Western Hampshire, Western Hampden, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts for 2-4″ of snow with isolated higher amounts of up to 6″ in higher elevation locations. Some sleet and freezing rain may mix in with the snow during the day Tuesday..
..Areas outside of the Winter Weather Advisory area north of the Mass Pike may see a coating to 2″ of snow accumulation with mostly rain occurring in these locations and pretty much all rain south of the Mass Pike..

Another round of accumulating snowfall is expected in northwest and north-central Massachusetts as another storm system will have just enough cold air in place to allow for this to occur. The headlines depict the latest thinking for snowfall late Monday Night into Tuesday.

As we look ahead to the busiest travel day of the year on Wednesday and into Thanksgiving, travelers will need to be on the lookout for localized snow squalls that may impact travel in isolated locations as well as strong wind gusts up to 40 MPH. In addition, bitterly cold conditions more like mid-winter will affect the region Wednesday Night into Thursday so dressing in multiple layers will be essential for any outdoor activities. Future coordination messages will detail weather conditions for Wednesday into Thanksgiving.

The snow and ice may be heavy enough to cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 6 PM Thursday Evening through 2 AM Friday Morning for Eastern Essex, Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk and Norfolk Counties of Massachusetts for 2-6″ of snow and a coating of ice with wind gusts in the 40-50 MPH range possible. At the coast, snow amounts may be closer to 1-2″ of snow. The snow and strong winds are likely sufficient to cause isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 7 PM Thursday Evening to 1 AM Friday Morning for Rhode Island and Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 2-6″ of snow away from the coast with 1-2″ of snow at the coast and ice accumulations of a coating with wind gusts in the 35-40 MPH range. The snow and winds may be sufficient to cause isolated pockets of tree and power line damage and isolated power outages..
..A High Wind Warning is now in effect from Midnight to 9 AM Friday for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds of 25-35 MPH with gusts in the 55-60 MPH range. A Wind Advisory is now in effect from Midnight to 9 AM Friday for Eastern Essex, Southeast Middlesex, Suffolk, Eastern Norfolk and Eastern Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for sustained winds of 15-30 MPH with gusts to 50 MPH. These winds will have the potential to cause isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages..

The first widespread accumulating snow and ice particularly for interior Southern New England and possibly some coastal areas is still expected late Thursday Afternoon into Friday Morning. There have been some changes where models are indicating a bit more snow then ice over portions of interior areas and this trips the snowfall amounts into Winter Storm Warning criteria. Also, some of the advisory areas have had their snow totals increased as well. The headlines depict the latest thinking. Key items to be resolved remains that there is a warm layer of air between the cold surface and colder temperatures aloft. Various factors in how thick this temperature layer is, how cold temperatures are and how heavy the precipitation is will determine how much snow versus ice falls and where the rain-snow line sets up before the rain-snow line eventually moves through Southern New England changing precipitation to ice and light rain before ending.
