Confidence increases on heavier snow for portions of Southern New Hampshire and Northeast/North-Central Massachusetts results in Winter Storm Warnings being issued for this area. Cape Cod now expected to receive advisory level snowfall with a Winter Weather Advisory issued there..
..A Winter Stom Warning is now in effect through 1 AM Wednesday for Southern New Hampshire, Essex, Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk and Worcester Counties of Massachusetts for 4-8 inches of snow with the heaviest snow during and after the evening commute between 4-10 PM..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect through 10 PM this evening for 2-4 inches of snow. The islands are still expected to receive only a dusting to 2″ of snow at this time. The heaviest snow will likely occur during and after the evening commute between 4-10 PM..

..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 9 AM to 8 PM Tuesday for Suffolk (Metro Boston Area), Norfolk, Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts and all of Rhode Island except for Block Island Rhode Island for 3-5 inches of snow..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 9 AM to 11 PM Tuesday for Southern New Hampshire, Worcester, Middlesex, and Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 3-5 inches of snow..
..The potential continues to exist for a band of heavier snow greater than 5 inches somewhere in the Winter Weather Advisory area. At greatest risk are parts of Northeast and North-Central Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire though it could setup elsewhere within the advisory areas in Eastern New England..

A storm system is moving into the area from the west and will intensify offshore of Southern New England. Snow has started in portions of Western Massachusetts and Western Connecticut as of 830 AM.

The storm will bring a plowable snowfall and a general snow accumulation of 3-5″ to much of Southern New England. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for much of the NWS Taunton Coverage Area except for Cape Cod and the Islands where a mix of snow and rain will keep amounts lower and in the coating to 2 inch range. The morning commute should not be impacted across most of the region though western areas are seeing the snow start near the end of the morning commute. The evening commute will see direct impact from this storm event with the heaviest snowfall likely between 3-8 PM across the region.

The uncertainties with this particular storm event will be how much moisture is associated with the system and when and how quickly the storm intensifies but a general 3-5 inch snowfall is still the most likely outcome currently though its noted models had higher precipitation amounts over portions of the area, particularly in Eastern New England. Models are continuing to hint at the potential for a heavier band of snow to setup within the general Winter Weather Advisory area. If this were to occur, it could create an area of snowfall greater than 5 inches somewhere within the advisory area. It is difficult to know the exact area of where this band may setup but current possibilities are over portions of Southern New Hampshire and Northeast Massachusetts and possibly other parts of Eastern New England. The timing of the heavier snow band formation is likely to be during and just after the evening commute.

It is noted that the snowfall graphic will show a more widespread 4-6″ snowfall versus the prior update. This is due to the fact the graphic will not allow for a 3-5″ range of snow totals. It only allows for 2-4″ or 4-6″ ranges. The most likely scenario is for 3-5″ with a band of potentially higher snowfall of greater than 5″ potentially in the Northeast Massachusetts/Southern New Hampshire region and possibly affecting other parts of Eastern New England.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will be utilized for this storm event looking for snowfall reports throughout the day. This will be the last coordination message on this storm event unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs. ..A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 1 PM Sunday Afternoon for Southern New Hampshire, Northern Connecticut, Northwest Providence County in Rhode Island and in Massachusetts from Norfolk County north and west including the Metro Boston region. Total snowfall of 6-12 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts of up to 14″ possible over portions of Northwest Massachusetts and Southwest New Hampshire with a trace to a tenth inch of ice in portions of Massachusetts..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 AM Sunday Morning for Southeast Providence, Kent and Washington Counties of Rhode Island and Northern Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow, a trace of ice and wind gusts up to 40 MPH..

A coastal winter storm that has been modeled for several days remains likely for Southern New England. Light snow has started across portions of Connecticut.

Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for Southern New Hampshire, all of interior Massachusetts including the Metro Boston area and Northeast Coastal Massachusetts through Norfolk County Massachusetts as well as Northern Connecticut, and Northwest Providence Counties of Rhode Island. Total snowfall of 6-12″ are likely with isolated higher amounts of up to 14 inches in Northwest Massachusetts and Southwest New Hampshire. Portions of Massachusetts may also see a trace to one-tenth inch of ice accumulation as well.

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 AM Sunday Morning for Southeast Providence, Kent and Washington Counties of Rhode Island and Northern Bristol and Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts for 3-6″ of snow, a trace of ice and wind gusts up to 40 MPH. This replaces the Winter Storm Watch for this region.

A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 5 PM Saturday Afternoon to 7 AM Sunday Morning for Newport County RI, and South Coastal Massachusetts including Cape Cod for 2-5″ of snow for much of the advisory area and a trace of ice with sustained winds of 20-30 MPH and gusts to 50 MPH likely. Isolated higher amounts are possible west of the Cape Cod Canal with amounts closer to 2 inches over the Outer Cape, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Island. Pike to the Cape Cod Canal and this will be dependent on the timing of the precipitation type changeover. If the storm tracks a bit closer to the coast, it will allow for mixed precipitation further inland. A track slightly more offshore would allow for more snow to occur in areas that are currently expected to get some mixed precipitation. It is noted the air remains very cold over the area with strong high pressure to the north of New England. Precipitation type changeover reports in addition to snow and ice total reports, wind measurement and wind damage reports will be critical during this storm.

A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for East Coastal Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands from 8-12 AM Sunday. Minor coastal flooding could occur at the time of the Sunday Morning high tide resulting in lane or road closures along most exposed north and east facing beaches in this area.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton is currently expected to start at 600 PM Saturday Evening. It is noted that the heaviest snowfall and strongest winds are expected during overnight hours so Ops during overnight hours at some level appear likely. This will be the last coordination message on this storm system as we move into operations mode. Total snowfall of 6-10″ with isolated higher amounts followed by a changeover to sleet and freezing rain producing a trace of ice accumulation.

A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for Southeast Providence and Western Kent Counties in Rhode Island, Northern Bristol and Western Plymouth Counties of Massachusetts and has been extended into Eastern Kent and Washington Counties of Rhode Island. Total snowfall of 4-6 inches of snow and a trace of ice are possible in this area. Snowfall in this area is near the threshold of advisory level versus warning level snowfall currently. The watch will likely be converted to a Winter Weather Advisory or Winter Storm Warning in future updates.

Areas outside of the Winter Storm Watch/Warning area could potentially receive 2-5″ of snow along South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island west of the Cape Cod Canal before a changeover to rain. Winter Weather Advisories could be issued for areas west of Cape Cod and the Islands. Over Cape Cod and the Islands, 1-2″ of snow/ice is expected before a change over to rain.

..A Winter Storm is poised to affect much of Southern New England with Heavy Snow and a potential for a wintry mix of precipitation..
..A Winter Storm Watch Is Now In Effect from Saturday Afternoon to Sunday Morning for Southern New Hampshire, Northern Connecticut, Providence and Western Kent Counties of Northern Rhode Island and in Massachusetts from Northern Bristol and Northern Plymouth Counties north and west to the state line. The potential exists for 6-12 inches of snow followed by a trace to a tenth inch of ice. Advisory level snow and ice (2-6″ along with a trace of ice) are possible from just south of the Winter Storm Watch area to the Cape Cod Canal before a changeover to rain with 1-2″ of snow/ice on Cape Cod and the Islands before a change over to rain. Uncertainty still exists on exact snowfall and icing amounts which will depend on any changeover in precipitation..

The initial preliminary totals is for 6-12″ of snow over the Winter Storm Watch area followed by a changeover to sleet and freezing rain producing a trace to a tenth inch of ice accumulation. Areas south and east of the Winter Storm Watch area are likely to see a period of snow and ice with 2-6″ of snow accumulation and a trace of ice before a changeover to rain from just south and east of the Winter Storm Watch area to the Cape Cod Canal with 1-2″ of snow across Cape Cod and the Islands before a changeover to rain. There remains uncertainty as far as exact snow and ice totals across the region. Models had trended colder with this storm for a time but are now implying more mixed precipitation particularly in Southeastern New England though this could extend further north and west. Future model runs should better delineate the rain/snow/ice line across the region.

Hello to all..

..Wintry Mixed Precipitation timed prior to and during Monday Morning Commute could cause travel problems during this time period..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for Southern New Hampshire, Hartford County CT, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties from 11 PM Sunday Evening through 10 PM Monday Evening for 1-2 inches of snow and a trace of ice with isolated 2-4 inch snowfall amounts possible in Southern New Hampshire..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect for North-Central and Northeast Connecticut, Providence, Kent and Washington Counties of Rhode Island and Southern Worcester, Western Norfolk and Central and Southeast Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts from 11 PM Sunday Evening through 1 PM Monday Afternoon for about an inch of snow and a trace of ice..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snow and ice totals and changeover in precipitation type reports during Monday Morning. The web based reporting form is now back in service..

Overnight tonight through midday Monday, a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain could cause slick travel conditions across much of interior Southern New England. There will be a brief period of snow and ice at the coast but that should quickly change over to rain so no Winter Weather Advisories are posted in this area. Across interior locations, much of interior Southeast Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North-Central and Northeast Connecticut should see a changeover to rain by around midday hence Winter Weather Advisories are in effect through 100 PM Monday. Across parts of Southern New Hampshire, Northern and Western Massachusetts and Northwest Connecticut, it is possible precipitation will remain snow and ice or only have a brief changeover to rain so advisories in this area are through 10 PM Monday Evening. Despite the storm being less than 24 hours away, there is greater uncertainty in this storm forecast and the areas of uncertainty include the timeframes of changeover of precipitation from snow to ice to rain, precipitation amounts of snow, ice and rain given the uncertainty of the timing of the changeover in precipitation types and how heavy the precipitation will be as current radar as of 700 PM shows the heavier precipitation sliding south of the area but steady precipitation should eventually build over Southern New England during the overnight hours.

SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snow and ice totals and changeover in precipitation type reports during Monday Morning. It is also noted that the web based reporting form is now back in service. This will be the only coordination message on this storm event unless a significant change/upgrade to the situation occurs. Storm Coordination Message #1 – Friday Evening 12/6/13-Saturday Morning 12/7/13 Winter Storm Event

Hello to all..

..Storm System will affect portions of Southern New England tonight into early Saturday Morning Bringing Accumulating Snow particularly north of the Mass Turnpike. Since SKYWARN Recognition Day will occur and we will have Ops at NWS Taunton for that event, Ops at NWS Taunton will cover this storm event during the evening through around/shortly after Midnight and early Saturday Morning..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 6 PM Friday Evening to 6 AM Saturday Morning for Franklin, Hampshire, Western Hampden, Northern Worcester and Northern Middlesex Counties for 2-4 inches of snow with isolated higher amounts of 5-6 inches in higher terrain locations in the east slopes of the Berkshires with a trace of ice possible. Precipitation will start as rain, mix with sleet/freezing rain before changing over to snow. Locations along and south of the Mass. Pike should see a Dusting to perhaps as much as 1-2 inches particularly locations closest to the Mass Pike..
..With SKYWARN Recognition Day causing planned operations at WX1BOX, SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will be part of the SRD event. We will be on the air for the event and looking for snowfall and precipitation type reports from 7 PM-12 AM tonight and we will look at coming in a bit earlier Saturday Morning for final snowfall total reports from Amateur Radio Operators and Spotters Saturday Morning. This will likely be the only coordination message on this event unless a significant upgrade to the storm occurs. Freezing Rain Coordination Message #1 – Thursday Morning 12/5/13

Hello to all..

..Freezing Rain may cause hazardous early morning travel across portions of Southern New Hampshire. A Freezing Rain Advisory is now in effect from 2-7 AM for Cheshire and Western-Central Hillsborough Counties of Southern New Hampshire. SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor the freezing rain situation for reports of icing accidents, road closures for icing and ice accretion reports. This will be the only coordination message on this situation unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs.
