Storm Coordination Message #1 – Wednesday Christmas Eve 12/24/25 Strong Wind Gust & Ocean Effect Snow Potential

Hello to all…

..Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters..
..Today’s light snow event underproduced particularly in Western Mass but portions of North-Central and Northeast Mass have recorded up to 1″ of snow and may see another inch or two overnight. This will set the stage for strong wind gusts on Christmas Eve with the potential for ocean effect snow showers from the Cape Ann North Shore area to parts of Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts which could see a coating to 1″ of snow but if some heavier model solutions verify, it could result in 1-2″ of snow with isolated higher amounts..
..A Wind Advisory is in effect from 3 AM-12 PM Wednesday for Western Franklin, Western Hampshire and Western Hampden Counties of Massachusetts and from 7 AM-3 PM Wednesday for Cape Cod and the Islands for sustained winds 15-25 MPH and wind gusts 45-50 MPH. Areas outside of the Wind Advisory could see wind gusts of around 40 MPH. These winds could result in isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for strong wind gusts and snowfall totals in North-Central/Northeast Massachusetts with the snow that has been occurring this evening and then ocean effect snow showers from Cape Ann to Eastern Plymouth County Massachusetts later Wednesday Morning into Wednesday Evening. This will be the only coordination message on this event unless a significant update to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Storm Coordination Message #1 – Tuesday 12/23/25 Light Snow Event

Hello to all…

..Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays to all Amateur Radio and non-Amateur Radio SKYWARN Spotters..
..A light snow event is expected Tuesday 12/23/25 which could cause some slippery roads and slower travel. Use caution and allow extra time to reach your travel destination. A general 1-3″ snowfall with isolated higher amounts of up to 4″ is likely across interior Southern New England north and west of I-95. The higher amounts will be over higher terrain interior locations with coastal locations likely going from snow to a mix to rain during this event with little snow accumulation at the coast..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor for snowfall reports during this light snow event. This will likely be the only coordination message unless a significant change to the situation occurs and time allows for an update. Below is the NWS Boston/Norton Area Forecast Discussion, Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook and NWS Boston/Norton Snowfall Map/Key Message graphics..

Storm Coordination Message #2 – Tuesday 12/2/25-Early Wednesday AM 12/3/25 – Coastal Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday weekend period! A coastal storm is on track to impact Southern New England likely bringing a plowable snowfall to interior Southern New England Tuesday Morning through late Tuesday Night with heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts to coastal Southern New England. Model alignment and confidence has increased since the prior update..
..A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect from 7 AM Tuesday Morning through 7 AM Wednesday Morning for Franklin, Northern Worcester, Northern Middlesex, Western Hampden, Western Hampshire and Western Hampden Counties of Massachusetts for 6-9″ of snow with isolated higher amounts and the heaviest amounts in the higher elevations. The snow has potential to be heavy and wet potentially leading to isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 4 PM Tuesday Evening to 7 AM Wednesday Morning for Central Middlesex and Western Essex Counties Massachusetts and for Eastern Hampshire, Eastern Hampshire and Southern Worcester Counties of Massachusetts from 7 AM Tuesday Morning to 7 AM Wednesday Morning for 3-5″ of snow. If higher amounts occur, the snow will be heavy and wet and could result in isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..Interior areas outside of the Winter Weather Advisory could see a coating to 2″ of snow with a period of slick travel Tuesday night into early Wednesday Morning. Coastal areas will see mostly rain with little to no snow accumulation with wind gusts of 40-45 MPH and isolated higher wind gusts possible. Rainfall amounts of 1-2″ with isolated higher amounts are also possible..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Tuesday into Wednesday Morning for snowfall amounts and any rain gauge, wet snow damage/wind damage reports. An initial Amateur Radio Net Schedule for locations in the Winter Storm Warning area are posed in this update below. Pictures and videos of storm damage and rain related flooding can be sent as a reply to this message via the WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated..

A coastal storm will bring the region’s first more widespread, plowable snowfall to a good portion of interior Southern New England. the headlines depict the current thinking. Key factors include:

1.) Model spread has been reduced since the last update. The solution is slightly warmer but still warning criteria snowfall is expected in the Winter Storm Warning area and reports of snowfall measurements and changeover in precipitation type will be important during the event for any forecast changes and verification of current conditions.
2.) There is no high pressure to the north that would aid in any storm system to bring down cold air but the storm will have some dynamics to keep interior areas particularly at higher elevations as mostly snow. Lower elevations will see lesser accumulations and some mix possible as highlighted in the configuration of the Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory areas.
3.) There will be an elevation component to this storm where higher elevations will likely have heavier snow than lower elevations even in the interior. Also, temperatures are expected to be marginally near or just above freezing but where precipitation falls as heavy wet snow, this will result in isolated to scattered pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages.
4.) Coastal areas are expected to see mostly rain but depending on the track and intensity of the storm could see a period of strong to perhaps damaging wind gusts as the storm moves through later Tuesday and Tuesday Night through early Wednesday AM with wind gusts of 40-45 MPH with isolated higher gusts possible. Heavy rainfall is also likely in this area with 1-2″ and isolated higher amounts possible.

SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Tuesday into Wednesday Morning for snowfall amounts and any rain gauge, wet snow damage/wind damage reports. Pictures and videos of storm damage and rain related flooding can be sent as a reply to this message via the WX1BOX Facebook/X/Bluesky feeds or to the email address pics@nsradio.org with credit given to the spotter unless otherwise indicated. Here is a preliminary Amateur Radio Net Schedule for areas under the Winter Storm Warning and could be updated if time allows Tuesday AM.

146.940-Mount Tom Repeater – Nets Starting at 900 AM and occurring in 2 hour intervals except an evening net will be held at 730 PM instead of 7 PM and then again at 10 PM Tuesday Evening with Wednesday AM Nets as needed at 600 AM
146.970-Paxton Repeater – Tentative net schedule at 2 hour intervals beginning at 230 PM
Route 2 Corridor system – Tentative net schedule at 2 hour intervals immediately following Paxton Nets at 230 PM
-Additional Nets and repeaters could be added as needed depending on storm conditions and if time allows – an update will be posted Tuesday AM.

Another coordination message will be posted by 1000 AM Tuesday Morning. Below is the NWS Boston/Norton Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory Statement/Snowfall Maps, Area Forecast Discussion and Enhanced Hazardous Weather Outlook:

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Tuesday 12/2/25-Early Wednesday AM 12/3/25 – Coastal Winter Storm Potential

Hello to all…

..We hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday weekend period! A coastal storm will impact Southern New England likely bringing a plowable snowfall to interior Southern New England Tuesday Morning through late Tuesday Night with heavy rainfall and strong wind gusts to coastal Southern New England. Snowfall amounts are more uncertain than normal at this time range given model solutions are not completely aligned on the track, speed and intensity of the system..
..A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect from Tuesday Morning through late Tuesday Night for Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire Worcester, Northern and Central Middlesex and Western Essex Counties of Massachusetts for 6″ or more of snow. Areas of Northern Connecticut through Northwest Rhode Island through Western Norfolk and Southeast Middlesex Counties of Massachusetts should monitor for similar impacts if the storm track is far enough offshore. Some area of the Winter Storm Watch area could have a heavy wet snow which could result in isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and power outages..
..Coastal areas of Southern New England are likely to see mostly rain with perhaps a period of snow at the start and possibly at the end of the storm. Depending on the intensity, there could also be a period of strong to damaging winds that will bear watching. Rainfall amounts of 1-2″ with isolated higher amounts are possible..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation with Amateur Radio Call-Up Nets are likely Tuesday into Wednesday Morning for snowfall amounts and any rain gauge, wet snow damage/wind damage reports.

1.) Model spread is larger than normal at this time range with some reliable models stronger and closer to the coast while other reliable models are weaker and further offshore. This will impact the heaviest snowfall area and total amounts.
2.) There is no high pressure to the north that would aid in any storm system to bring down cold air. This means a further offshore track will still likely result in mostly rain at the coast line and perhaps interior Southeast New England depending on how heavy the precipitation is and if the heavier precipitation falls during daylight hours or at night.
3.) There could be an elevation component to this storm where higher elevations may have heavier snow than lower elevations even in the interior. Also, if temperatures are marginally near or just above freezing but precipitation falls as heavy wet snow, this could result in isolated pockets of tree and wire damage and isolated power outages.
4.)
