Hello to all..

A slate of SKYWARN Training classes have been put together for the May to June timeframe. Additional classes are being worked in the June-July-August timeframe that will be driven by Amateur Radio Coordinators and added to the schedule as confirmed. Areas for additional classes that are being looked at include Rhode Island, Eastern Massachusetts and possibly in the Eastern Franklin County Massachusetts/Cheshire County New Hampshire area. Boston Marathon Coordination Message #1 – Monday April 15th, 2013

Hello to all..

The following message is being posted via the SKYWARN email list to allow for widest distribution to Amateurs supporting the Boston Marathon. We appreciate everyone’s patience with this message.

A Boston Marathon Coordination Message has been posted to the Eastern Massachusetts ARES web site. It is giving information to Amateur Radio Operators who are supporting the Boston Marathon from around the region, weather safety information as it pertains to the marathon event and information to Eastern Massachusetts ARES members who cannot support the marathon to have a heightened state of awareness on Monday April 15th from 7 AM-7 PM in case of an incident outside of the marathon route that they may be able to support. ARES members in the Eastern Massachusetts section that are supporting the Boston Marathon directly are to support that mission as their top priority and utilize this coordination message for weather safety information only. ..A coastal low is on track to bring some wintry precipitation to the higher elevations of Southern New Hampshire and Northwest and North-Central Massachusetts Friday Morning along with a period of heavy rain up to 1-1.25″ region wide and winds of 25-35 MPH along the coast..
..A Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect from 12 AM to Noon Friday for Southern New Hampshire and for Franklin, Northern Worcester, Northern Middlesex, Weestern Hampshire and Western Hampden Counties of Massachusetts for 1-2 inches of sleet and a trace to one-tenth inch of ice accumulation particularly for higher elevation locations. In southern areas of the advisory, highest sleet amounts will be above 1,000 feet..
..Rainfall may produce pockets of localized urban/poor drainage flooding on Friday. Winds are expected to remain below Wind Advisory criteria but will be monitored..

Storm Coordination Message #1 – Monday Evening 3/25/13-Tuesday Morning 3/26/13 Winter Storm Event

Hello to all..

..A coastal storm will largely miss Southern New England grazing the South Coast of Massachusetts and Cape Cod and the Islands with 1-2″ of snow with isolated 3″ amounts. Strong Winds will reach Wind Advisory criteria on Nantucket Island and may be near that criteria in other parts of South Coastal Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Minor splashover may occur on north and east facing coastal areas of the Eastern Massachusetts coastline..
..A Wind Advisory is in effect for Nantucket Island from 4 PM this afternoon to 8 AM Tuesday Morning. It is possible the Wind Advisory could be expanded to other parts of Cape Cod and the Islands..
..SKYWARN Self-Activation will monitor this storm event Monday Night into Tuesday. This is the only coordination message for this storm system unless a significant upgrade to the situation occurs. It is noted that one fairly reliable model brings storm impacts closer to the southern parts of Southern New England but it is currently being discounted at this time as multiple other reliable models has a near miss for the region. Special Announcement: National Hurricane Conference Amateur Radio Workshop and Livestreaming

The National Hurricane Conference is coming up starting from Monday March 25th through Thursday March 28th. Amateur Radio will be represented at three sessions during the conference on Monday March 25th, 2013.

Models remain in agreement on another winter storm impacting the region Monday Night into Tuesday Night. The headlines reflect the current thinking and confidence remains fairly high for the scenario. Snow has started in portions of Western New England and will continue to spread from southwest to northeast and become heavy at times overnight into the Tuesday Morning commute with the Tuesday Morning commute being significantly impacted. Snow will mix with sleet, freezing rain and rain, in the Winter Weather Advisory area and the southern end of the Winter Storm Warning areas but across areas north of the Mass. Pike and west of I-495, precipitation is expected to be all snow or snow and sleet/freezing rain. The key areas of uncertainty remain over the Metro Boston area concerning snowfall amounts and the timing of the mixture/changeover in precipitation over southern portions of the Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory areas as that will impact snowfall amounts. The scenario has trended a bit colder resulting in Winter Weather Advisories expanded all the way to Cape Cod and the Southeast Massachusetts and Southeast Rhode Island coastline with Winter Storm Warnings extended to the North Shore and Metro Boston area and slightly higher snowfall amounts for northern parts of the Winter Storm Warning areas.

SKYWARN Activation with Ops at NWS Taunton will commence by 5 AM Tuesday Morning lasting through early evening. This will be the last coordination message on this storm event.
